Hey Bartender Premiere and 7 Cocktails from the Stars of the Film

Last night I checked out the Stamford premiere of 4th Row Films’ Hey Bartender, a documentary that not only tells the story of the cocktail and bartender, but also follows the lives of two bartenders.  Granted I had already seen it, but it’s always great to see a movie twice.  You catch things that you had missed before or can see the subtle touches from the director and producer that lead the story along the way.  The second time around, I enjoyed the movie even more because I also had that feel for the characters in the film.  And, the anticipation of the Q&A at the end of the film was just awesome.

During the showing, it was nice to see the audience clap during key parts of the movie with Steve Schneider or laugh at Steve Carpentieri’s jokes such as bringing a hip bartender hat back from New Orleans because that’s what bartenders wear.   When the movie ended, our friend Kelly McGinnis who works for the Avon brought up Joe Meyers from CT Post who had a few questions ready.  Then we were introduced to Doug Tirola (Director), Danielle Rosen (Co-producer), Susan Bedusa (Producer), Steve Schneider, and Carpi.  It was great to hear about the film, all the work that went into it, and how Danielle has traveled to over 100 bars just for the film.  Pretty wild.  And, I felt like a little fanboy listening to Steve Schneider talk and philosophize about life and bartending.  Lucky me found him outside and we got to talk for a quick sec and I learned that he had actually created 100 of his giant Thor hammers to sell in order to help raise money for pitbulls.  What an awesome guy.  Carpi was hilarious too, throwing in a story about waking up late to work after a late night of drinking, rushing to Dunville’s, then realizing he wasn’t wearing any pants, just boxers.  The audience couldn’t get enough of him.

It was an all around great event and I was happy to get the chance to attend.  Hey Bartender is playing in over 50 cities now and hopefully they’ll be adding more in soon.  Plus, you can watch it on Amazon, iTunes, and other online sources.  Deciding not to let the fun end, we’re sharing favorite recipes from the Steves along with Dale DeGroff, Jim Meehan, Charlotte Voisey, Dushan Zaric, and Julie Reiner.

On Holiday:

Steve Schneider, Employees Only in New York City

  1 1⁄2 oz Hendrick’s gin

  1⁄2 oz simple syrup

  1 oz lemon juice

  1⁄2 oz Lillet blanc

  1 pinch basil

  club sodaAdd ingredients (except soda) to a mixing glass. Add ice, shake, and fine‐strain over ice into a tall Tom Collins glass. Top with club soda, stir, and ornament with a basil leaf and a cucumber slice

Watermelon & Blood Orange Habanero Margarita: Stephen Carpentieri, Dunville’s Bar in Westport, CT

  2 oz Milagro Reposado tequila

  1 oz Solerno blood orange liqueur

  3⁄4 oz fresh lime juice

  1⁄2 oz habanero infused simple syrup

  4 cubes fresh watermelon

For garnish, use 1 slice of jalapeno, 1 cube of watermelon, and 1 lime wedge. In a mixing glass, muddle watermelon, lime juice and simple syrup. Add Milagro reposado tequila and Solerno blood orange liqueur and ice. Hard shake and strain over fresh ice. Salted rim is optional. Simple syrup ‐ in a sauce pan bring 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar to a boil. Stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and add one habanero pepper cut it half. Simmer for approximately 15 minutes. Strain to remove pepper and chill. For a little less spice, simmer for approximately 7 minutes, remove pepper and continue to reduce for another 8 minutes.

Rusty Grail:

Jim Meehan, PDT in New York City

  1⁄2 oz Balvenie 14‐Year‐Old Caribbean Cask Scotch whisky

  3⁄4 oz fresh pineapple juice

  1⁄2 oz Smith & Cross Jamaican rum

  1⁄2 oz Drambuie

  1⁄2 oz fresh lemon juice

  2 dashes Regans’ orange bitters

Shake with ice and strain into a Pernod‐and‐allspice‐dram‐rinsed old‐fashioned glass. Garnish with an orange peel spiked with three whole cloves

The Fitzgerald:

Dale DeGroff, “King Cocktail”

 1 1⁄2 oz Hendrick’s gin

  1 oz simple syrup

  3⁄4 oz fresh lemon juice

  2 dashes Dale DeGroff’s pimento bitters

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into an old‐fashioned glass. Garnish with a lemon wedge

The Summer Cup:

Charlotte Voisey, Portfolio Ambassador, William Grant & Sons

  1 1⁄2 oz Hendrick’s gin
  1⁄2 oz Rhubarb Tea liqueur
  3⁄4 oz fresh lemon juice
  3⁄4 oz simple syrup
  3 muddled strawberries
  2 oz ginger beerShake. Strain over ice. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with cucumber and mint.

Waterloo:
Dushan Zaric, Employees Only and Macao Trading Co. in New York City

 4 watermelon pieces, one‐by‐two‐inch chunks

  3⁄4 oz simple syrup
  1 1⁄2 oz Hendrick’s gin
  1⁄2 oz fresh‐squeezed lemon juice
  1⁄2 oz Campari
Muddle the watermelon and simple syrup in the bottom of a mixing glass until all the fruit has turned into juice. Then add the rest of the ingredients and fill up glass with 5 large ice cubes. Shake briefly, and pour unstrained into a tall Tom Collins glass. Garnish with a piece of watermelon with rind
