Station Eats Gives Back w/ Their Dog of the Month

6 May

Hot Dog of the Month Taco Dog Station Eats Stamford

Cinco de Mayo doesn’t have to end, especially not at Station Eats.  Starting today until the middle of June, they’ll be featuring their Taco Dog as the Dog of the Month.  Pick your dog (grass fed beef, chicken, or veggie), then they’ll add on tomato salsa, lettuce, shredded cheddar, sour cream, and wrap it up in a warm flour tortilla.  If that’s not spicy enough for ya, just remember that the good guys at Station Eats will be donating 10% of their profits for Taco Dogs to two great causes:  Camp Promise East (giving summer camp experiences to people with muscular dystrophy and ALSTDI (fighting to find a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease).  You can get the Taco Dog at either the New Canaan or Stamford locations, btw.

If you’d like a burger and shake to complement that doggie, then check out these specials starting today:  The Steak House Burger and their Coconut Shake.  The Steak House Burger (we’d had it before, it’s excellent) has cheese, Station Steak Sauce, shaved onions, and tomato.  So, make sure to come by a few times and get your Taco Dog!  Also, why not invite your friends, have family reunions at Station Eats, have your next birthday party, too!  A Taco Dog for everybody!

A Burger a Day in the Month of May in Fairfield County

29 Apr

May is National Hamburger Month, so what better way to celebrate than talking about hamburgers?  Ah, so many styles, so many toppings, so many meat combinations…so much antacid.  What we’ve done is create a list of hamburgers that you just might want to try, organized by each day of May, not organized by favorite.  So, by the time this month is through, you better make sure you’ve had every single one of these burgers.  We’ll be checking your receipts!

We’ll update this list every day in May, so check back daily for your burger fix.  But, let’s say we missed your favorite spot…just let us know.  No biggie.

May 1:  Station Eats of New Canaan and Stamford.  Try their burger (shake and dog, too) of the month and see what awesome combos they have next.  They use fresh, never frozen, grass-fed beef.  And, starting Mid-May, they’ll have their own biergarten.  Guten tag indeed.

May 2: Luc’s Cafe of Ridgefield.  Aside from some killer frites with the burger, they make it right and make it one way:  hormone free home ground burger with (or without) Swiss cheese or bacon.  You can add Roquefort for $2.50 more.

May 3: Melt Mobile food truck of Stamford and Greenwich: aside from sophisticatedly awesome grilled cheese sandwiches, there’s a reverse cheeseburger that they’re dishing out:  The Insanewich.  On the outside they have two of their Original Melts, packed with Gruyere, Tillamook Cheddar, and Monterey Jack.  Nestled inside is a beautiful grilled 6 oz. Angus burger served with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and Melt sauce.  If you can finish this bad boy, you are worthy of our admiration!

May 4: Mr. Frosty’s of Stamford (Harbor Point).  We were sick to our stomachs when we learned from Anthony that Beach Burger in Norwalk had closed, but then we felt optimistic again because we knew that Mr. Frosty’s in Stamford would still be serving burgers.  The burgers here are great and come in some awesome varieties.  Don’t overlook their fries and their milkshakes, though.  There are tons of tables out now around the park, so checking out Mr. Frosty’s and even getting a celebratory ice cream afterwards is the perfect way to enjoy spring and summer.

May 5: Bobby Q’s Pit Stop in Greenwich.  So, check this burger out:  your choice of a regular, double, or local beef patty served with Joey B’s rich and spicy chili, white cheddar, and…Fritos!  Oh, the Fritos make it.  The burger (a double) came out juicy, the chili was fantastic, and was great with a Chocolate Mallomar Milkshake.  BTW, there’s a milkshake with bacon on the menu.  Just sayin!

May 6: Black Duck in Westport.  People have been going here well before Guy Fieri stamped his bite of approval on this famous floating restaurant.  There are lots of ways to get your burger here from the classic cheeseburger, to a burger with bacon, or a cheeseburger with bacon…but then there’s the bleu cheese stuffed burger, oozing with flava.

May 7: The Fez in Stamford.  You need to order The Fez Burger.  Quite the unconventional and unexpected burger, but sooo good.  We’re talking a mixture of lamb and beef together, uniting as one.  Sometimes lamb by itself can be too gamey and overwhelming, but the beef balances it out.  It’s served with crispy lettuce and tomato, served with roasted onions and peppers.  Oh, and they throw on a fabulous green spiced sauce to bring it all together.

May 8: Super Duper Weenie in Fairfield.  SDW is an obvious choice if you’re looking for some hot and freshly made wieners, but they’re also a great choice if you want a burger.  You can choose between their 4.5 or 6 oz. burgers that are hand-made grass-fed/organic/hormone free/antibiotic free/certified Angus.  They serve it up on a potato roll.  Yes, when you go there the last thing you think of is a hamburger, but we had the opportunity to try their burgers at an event with the SDW truck.  The meat itself was fresh and full of flavor and was cooked nicely.  The patty kept that juiciness that makes any burger a treat to eat.  Plus, they have lots of great add-ons at the restaurant such as their hand-made toppings like the relish.  Go with the hot relish, though. ;)

May 9:  Napa & Co. of Stamford.  The Napa Wagyu Burger definitely has a cult following, but there’s a price to way…$26 to be exactly.  While some might scoff at paying such a premium price for just a burger, it’s not just a burger.  It’s more of an experience.  They take premium Wagyu (aren’t those two words basically the same thing?) and top it with onion jam, aged Gouda, and black pepper mayo then serve it on a brioche roll.  When we tried the burger it was cooked exactly how we like it:  medium rare.  The patty was juicy and was amazingly full of flavor.  You get garlicky french fries with that burger, too…don’t worry.

May 10:  Coalhouse Pizza in Stamford.  Again, although you might not think of burgers when you hit up Coalhouse, you should give one a shot.  Like their pizzas, they come in great varieties, named after blues and jazz legends.  Starting off, all burgers are 8 oz. prime beef patties.  We had the Classic Coalhouse which simply has Romaine, tomato, and red onion and is served on an English muffin.  The burger was definitely cooked nicely (pink or some pink like Plan B) with a good amount of pink hanging around.  It was definitely juicy and full of flavor.  We’ve also had many specialty burgers that have been made for beer dinners and they have been awesome.  The next time we come by for one of their 52 brews on tap, we’ll try the Stevie Ray Vaughan which includes a fried egg, bacon, tomato, pepperjack, and Texas mesquite on a brioche bun.  Sure…that counts as breakfast. ;)

May 11: Plan B Burger Bar in Stamford.  Although service time from the kitchen has been a consistent issue in reviews, we’ve never had a bad burger at Plan B…but it’s certainly not for every burger lover.  The patties here are different than most other burgers than you’ve probably had.  They pack them very loosely here and this warrants their “some pink” or “no pink” ordering.  This frustrates people and it confused us at first, but it made sense after our waitress explained it:  because they freshly grind the burger meat each day and pack it loosely, it’s very tough to serve it the exact way that you want it.  We’ve been by a few times and tried some of their classic menu items such as Kristien’s go-to, Tavern Classic,  the Chili burger with jalapenos and jack cheese, and the Squeeler with a half pork/half beef mixture.  And, we’ve also experimented with their burgers of the week, munching on a killer mac & cheese burger.  Plus, it doesn’t hurt that they have a wicked good bourbon selection to wash that burger down with.

May 12:  Ginger Man in Greenwich.  While their sister restaurant in Norwalk might have more brews on tap, the Greenwich location is still impressive, boasting 26 draft lines.  And, you know what that means?  You need some burgers to wash all that down with.  When we went for St. Patrick’s Day, we sat upstairs and took the less traditional route.  We ordered their lamb burger with feta and a nicely mild tzatziki sauce on top.  The lamb was cooked perfectly, still pink inside, still juicy, and was full of that beautiful gamey flavor that only lamb can bring.  Plus, the tabouli on the side was actually really good.  We didn’t know what it’d be like and were a bit hesitant, but we actually enjoyed it.  Definitely a nice solid choice for the pub-grub here.

May 13: Burger, Shakes & Fries of Darien and Greenwich.  Although we first tried the burgers, shakes, and fries at the Darien location, we’re happy to say we live within walking distance of the Greenwich location.  Perhaps one of the things that we love the most about the burgers at BSF is how they are served on fluffy buttered (oh so buttery) toast.  The toast itself is awesome, and the patty is excellent, always cooked to medium rare (unless you ask of course).  Toppings are great and can be customized.  Favorite combo?  Bacon, fried egg, and hot peppers.  It’s important to note that the Darien location has more room, while the Greenwich location is smaller and dive-ier.  We actually like the Greenwich location more…especially because you get to see the charmer Kory Wollins, charming owner and burger-lover.

May 14:  Burger Bar & Bistro in Norwalk.  Although there have been some reviews of quality going down here, when we went, we had a great time and enjoyed our burgers.  Perhaps the star of the show for Dan was the B.E.C. Burger, served with applewood smoked bacon, a fried egg, two slices of American cheese, fries, and a spicy ketchup.  If you look back up to the start of this post you can see this burger in all its glory.  And, you can also upgrade to Kobe beef for an even better burger experience.  Yes, the fries are actually served ON the burger.  If you’ve got a pup, you should take advantage of the outdoor patio because there’s a menu just for dogs, too.

May 15:  Dairy Inn in Stamford.  Sometimes you don’t want a gourmet burger and just want to get down and dirty.  And, Dairy Inn at 1092 Hope Street (seen during a scene in the movie, Let’s Talk about Ryan) fulfills your need for down and dirty grub.  They are grilling up dogs, red hots (Dan’s favorite), and flame-broiled burgers…plus they have lots of sides like jalapeno poppers and other tried and true American fast food favorites.  This was always our favorite alternative to going to a place like McDonald’s or even the much disappointing Jake’s Wayback Burger down the road.  Yes, it’s not a gourmet burger, but it’s always served hot and juicy with your choice of toppings.  Plus, you can have some ice cream with that burger. ;)

May 16: MacDuff’s in Greenwich.  Maybe you’ve never heard of MacDuff’s, but we were looking for a nice Irish pub in Greenwich when we moved.  And, it’s kind of a requirement to order wings, burgers, and fries when you go to a pub.  Looking back after actually being to Ireland, you do get that authentic kind of vibe by going there.  The burger is made with 8 oz. of Prime Hereford beef topped with farmhouse cheddar.  The burger was very fresh and had that manly meaty taste that you crave in a burger.  There was nice grill marks and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare.  This was all served on a poppy seed roll.  Perhaps the most fun thing to do was dip the burger in the onion whisky sauce that comes with the burger.  That stuff should be illegal.  The housemade chips that also come with the dish were crispy and had that nice crunch that you crave.  If there was a tiny bit more seasoning this could be one of our favorite burgers ever.

May 17:  Shake Shack in Westport.  Again, we’re not burger snobs, so we can really go for any kind of burger.  It might be a simple patty, a more complicated version, or maybe even a chain burger.  What matters is that ya like it and you enjoy it.  Waits might be long here at Shake Shack, but the burger is worth it in the end…and so is the outdoor seating.  When we tried, Kristien got her standard toppings:  lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, ketchup, and extra extra extra pickles.  She asked for it medium and she got it medium.  It was full of flavor, had nice girth and thickness, the bun was fresh, and the patty had that nice char and crispiness on the outside while it was nice and juicy in the middle.  It’s really easy to throw on lots of crazy toppings and say a burger is great, but to keep it simple and have it still be great is a completely different issue.  Plus, um, we love the shakes. :P

May 18: GRAND of Stamford.  Chef Nick Biello came to Grand a few years back and helped them to rework the menu of this trendy nightspot.  The menu soon became a burger lover’s dream with so many great choices.  Although Dan loved his Elvis burger (peanut butter, banana, bacon), they have since taken it off the menu.  Seriously, how could you do that to us?  Even still, their other classic burgers are still available with the choice of grass fed beef, free range turkey, or homemade veggie.  Both our burgers were perfectly cooked to medium rare and you could tell that the meat was fresh and of very high quality…not like eating pink slime from McDonald’s at all.  Some burgers to try out are the Bacon Egg Burger (bacon, deviled egg, peppers), the Bing Burger (cherry preserve, fresh mooz, sea salt), Slow & Low Burger (robiola cheese, braised short ribs, bbq), and the Grand Burger with bleu cheese, caramelized onions, and fig balsamic.

Most anticipated burgers that we (and you) need to try…

May 19: Garden Catering of Greenwich, Fairfield, Stamford, and Norwalk.  Garden Catering doesn’t do just specials with nuggets and cones.  Nope, they’ve got a crazy burger that has us counting down the days until we can hit up their nearby spot in Old Greenwich.  We’re talking about the Hotsy burger!  You take a 6 oz patty, grill it up, add cheese, Hotsy’s chili (they’re also famous for their chili, btw), 3 strips of bacon, smashed potato cones, and a fried egg.  Holy heart attack, Batman…we’ve so got to get this!

May 20:  Bailey’s Backyard of Ridgefield.  We were amazed with our experience at the reopening of Bailey’s Backyard, now with Chef Forrest Pasternack.  With his focus on real, fresh, and local ingredients, you have to know that Bailey’s will be providing an awesome burger.  Their burger comes from nearby Greyledge Farm in Roxbury, where Forrest grew up.  He’s serving the patty up with housemade pickles (you can buy them there, too), aerated ketchup, and it’s served up on a soft potato roll.  On the side you’ll get some market shoestring fries.  When we come back to visit in a week with our friends Renato and Alicia of rMedia and The Natural Princess, we’ll definitely have to order this…and maybe Chef Pasternack’s tasting menu, too…

Why Plan B should be your Plan A. Plan B Burger Bar – Stamford, CT

18 Aug

When it comes to grabbing a burger you can go one of two ways…

Plan A:  your boring, ordinary, ship-em in/ship-em out burger  joint.

Plan B:  a beer and bourbon lover’s utopia, piled high with creative , delicious Certified Humane, fresh, never frozen burgers and sides in a sleek and swanky spot.

So, look.  Plan A is fine if you just want a plain ol’ burger stat and that’s it.  But, when you want more, you need to check out Plan B Burger Bar in Stamford.  They just opened August 4 on the right side of the outdoor food court (next to Barnes & Noble, across from California Pizza Kitchen) at Stamford Town Center Mall.

When you step in, you’re greeted by a chalkboard with a big list of American craft beers on draft.  We were tired from a long trip from the Hamptons where we celebrated our sixth anniversary in style so we gladly welcomed a nice and comfy table in the bar/lounge area.  As we sat, our waitress came by and told us about the beer, bourbon, and drink list.  We felt daring, so we went with an Ommegang Witte beer AND the Small Batch Threesome of bourbon for $14.   You can also order the Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Threesome for $10 or the Single Barrel Threesome at $12.

When the bartender got our order, he climbed up on the bar, took down the bourbon, and got our samples ready.  The cups came on a rectangular dish with the names of the bourbons written on a napkin for reference.  First was Kentucky Vintage, next was Hirsh Selection, then Four Roses.  Before you try your bourbon you’re supposed to put it by your mouth and smell it.  If you try to get the aromas through your nose though, you probably won’t be able to pick up all the scents because you’ll be overwhelmed.  You actually have to inhale it with your mouth instead. Yeah, we just learned this too! Then, when you are ready to taste, make sure to sip and savor.  Our biggest tips are to save most of the bourbon for pairings with your food and make sure to sip and savor.

Choosing the booze was easy, but picking our meal was pretty tough.  See, there are some pretty awesome sounding apps, sides, delicious devour-worthy big plates, great salads, and of course a crazy array of burgers.  Before we ordered, we said we’d have to come back at least 10 more times to try everything that caught our eyes.

Ok, let’s do this: Continue reading

Bourbon, Brews, and Burgers: all about the new Plan B Burger Bar in Stamford, CT

2 Aug

Back in March we told you about Plan B Burger Bar opening up a restaurant in the Stamford Town Center.  Then, you most likely sighed when you saw the opening was sometime in the fall of 2012.  Fall?  No summer without burgers, American craft beers, and bourbon?  Well, sigh no more.  Plan B Burger Bar will be open for business this Saturday, 8/4, starting at 2 pm!

There are lots of things that we’re excited about in terms of Plan B Burger Bar opening up in Stamford.  First of all, the meat they use is never frozen and is ground in the restaurant every day.  Secondly, this beef is Certified Humane which means they are allowed to graze to their four-stomachs’ content, they aren’t fed junk, and they aren’t treated with antibiotics.  Plus, whenever they can, they get food, beer, and more locally.

Look at that beaut! From Press Release.

What else are we gushing over?  Their love, appreciation, and worship of drinks!  To be honest, we don’t know jack about bourbon, so we’re excited to learn more from the servers and bartenders at Plan B.  We do know a helluva lot about craft beer, though, and they’ll have a ton of the good stuff.  Did we mention that there are certified Cicerones (beer sommeliers) who can lead you to that perfect beer time after time?

Plan B Burger Bar isn’t just drinks and burgers, though.  They have a nice menu of American and bar classics that are kicked up a bit and fancy-fied.  You’ve got some organic portabella or truffle fries, lobster rolls or sliders, wings, a bourbon baked brie plate, Beef Wellington bites (Gordon Ramsay would approve), a soup of the day, and 8 different salads.

Now, in terms of looks, this place is gonna scorch it.  It’s right at Stamford Town Center, so they were able to go crazy because there was lots of room.  We’re talking 4,500 square feet!  There’s an outdoor patio, a large bar for those nights out, and of course the dining area that seats 185 people.  There’s also a lounge area if you feel like taking it easy and chilling with some friends with some cocktails, brews, or bourbon.  The lighting is also pretty freaking sick.  Above the bar you’ll find meat hooks that have lights attached to them.  There are tons of other fun touches around the restaurant like a metal bull head statue, a red neon sign that blinks on and off with “Eat, Meat.”  Finishing touch?  The M flickers on and off.  Sick.

So, we’re definitely excited to try out Plan B Burger Bar in Stamford and all they have to offer.  We know that Connecticut loves good burgers, so let’s see what they got.

What do you think?  Have you been to one of the other Plan B Burger Bars?  What did you enjoy or love about your visit?  Dish it out, we wanna know.

Super Duper Weenie Truck Hits up Bull N’ Brew at Ambler Farm – Wilton, CT

11 Jun

California Lovin’, Dre Style

Starting in college, I became a vegetarian.  It wasn’t always the easiest to do, especially when you were out with your friends, but I had my reasons mostly around conserving energy and saving the environment.  But, by the time I met Kristien, I was eating just fish, then slowly, I started to eat chicken but I still didn’t touch pork or beef.

That is until the summer I worked at a camp in New Canaan.  See, every other week they’d have Super Duper Weenie come to make hot dogs and burgers.  After seeing all my kids eating up and enjoying their food, I knew what I had to do.  Slowly, I had a burger here, a hot dog there.  By the end of the summer, I had built my stomach back up to beef-eating state. The lure of Super Duper Weenie was way too much.  Yeah, I know, I’m a sell out. ; )

Now, imagine our delight when Dina Nocerino wrote us and told us about a great fundraiser for her organization, Karuana Bully Rescue called Bull N’ Brew that featured Super Duper Weenie!  I mean, it all aligned with the OmNomCT creed:

1:  We love doggies.

2:  We love to help doggies.

3:  We love to eat hot doggies.

4:  We love to wash down hot doggies with brews.

Let’s start off by saying how awesome the 2nd Annual Bull N’ Brew was.  There was an amazing selection of beer from New England Brewing Company, Beaver Beer, Victory, Thomas Hooker and more. So, it wasn’t a major surprise that we saw a member of the elite Barley Literati, James Gribbon.  The music by Tim Palmieri and Friends was awesome and so was Like Violet who played the final set of the night.  People were having a great time, talking, relaxing, drinking, jamming, and chomping on some Super Duper Weenie.  Best of all?  Tons of money was raised with about 80 people attending.  Money that will be used to help rescue dogs, take care of them, then find them loving homes.

Okay, onto Super Duper Weenie.

Gary Zemola and co. were there and you could pick from a variety of your favorite dogs or make your own burger and add a side of fries if you wanted, too.  We took things slowly, ordering a hot dog each, sipped on some brews, then went back for seconds.  I’ve only had the Georgia Red Hot and the Mighty-Ity, so I decided to explore things a bit and try their other dogs.  Kristien branched out and tried new stuff too.  Here’s our hot dog and burger break down for the best hot dogs we’ve ever had in Connecticut:

Come to Poppa!

New Yorker: Sauerkraut, Onion Sauce, Mustard, & Hot Relish. This is the hot dog purist hot dog, which is exactly why Kristien always gets this one. Absolutely perfect! That snap you dream about when you bite into a hot dog topped with sauerkraut, spicy brown mustard (the ONLY kind for hot dogs) and their homemade onion sauce and hot relish that is to die for… all in just the right proportions.

Cincinnatian: Cincinnati Style Chili, Cheddar Cheese & Chopped Onions. What can I say? The chili here is great. It has a really exotic taste, too…there are hints of Indian spices in there, just awesome. They didn’t go light on the cheese either, adding a nice balance of flavors to the rich savoriness of the chili and the bold punch of the onions.

The Hot Dog Went down to Georgia…

Georgia Red Hot:  Sausage, sauerkraut, mustard, and sweet relish. Kristien loved the crunch of the red hot, and the bite from sauerkraut and relish offered an awesome finishing taste.

Californian: Homemade Meat Chili, Freshly Chopped Onion, American Cheese & Hot Relish. This is what I went with when I found out there was only one Georgia Red Hot left. I was told that it was a good alternative if you wanted something spicy. Well, the chili was great and there was just the right amount of cheese on there to give it a great contrast in flavors. I didn’t get the heat, though, like I remember getting at their restaurant in Fairfield. Still, an awesome hot dog that left me satisfied.

Burger Deluxe: 1/4 lb. Pure Beef, Lettuce, Tomato, Grilled Onion. I had fond memories of the burgers from camp, but I soon realized that Super Duper Weenie was better than I remember. This burger was juicy, full of flavor, and was piled high with toppings. Surprisingly, one of the best burgers I’ve had in a long time.

Load ‘er up!

Fresh Cut Fries: Even though they made them on their truck, they were still awesome.  Cut just right, fried just right, crispy, seasoned nicely with salt and black pepper. Nice and shoestringy!

Bull N’ Brew, 2013

The 2nd Annual Bull N’ Brew was a blast and we look forward to next year’s.  If you missed out this year, you’ll have to wait a year, but it’s totally worth it.  In the meantime, check out Karuana Bully Rescue for other fun events on the way and help them out with a donation if you can.   You can also check out Super Duper Weenie in Fairfield, CT to experience their legen-wait for it-dary dogs.  Thanks again to Karuana Bully Rescue for making this all happen!

Our favorite burger joint comes to Stamford! New Beach Burger/Mr. Frosty’s Spot in Harbor Point.

28 May

A bacon wrapped hot dog with guacamole, pico de gallo, and jalapeno (Tijuana Dog) can soon be yours in Stamford!

Update:  Today and tomorrow are soft openings in preparation for Friday’s Grand Opening of Mr. Frosty’s!  Who’s in?

Directions:  read the following question then choose the best answer.

1)  Add one part Mr. Frosty’s in Norwalk, mix in a second part The Beach Burger, then dash in some Harbor Point Stamford and guess what you get?

A) A ridiculously, magically delicious restaurant that rivals the awesomeness of unicorns.

B) Another reason to visit Stamford.

C) Another reason to be alive.

D) All of the above.

If you are any good at these kinds of questions, you picked D.  Let’s show you why D is correct. Restaurant owner, Anthony Luciani gave us the exclusive scoop:

Anthony Luciani has the magic touch.  Mr. Frosty’s, on 6 1st Street in Norwalk, has a devoted following and we’ve never seen it empty.  Maybe it’s the 3o or so hard ice cream, sherbert, and sorbert flavors, or maybe it’s their soft serve and froyo options, their bountiful sundaes, or their thick whipped razzles?  Nah, couldn’t be.

But even more magical is his other joint, The Beach Burger, right next door.  They are the 2011 OmNomy Winner for Best Burger.  It’s hard to go wrong here:  from the Bynum Burger, to the classic Beach Burger, to an oyster-laden Surf & Turf Burger.  But, they also have some killer hot dogs, such as the Tijuana dog that has a bacon wrapped wiener, guacamole, jalapenos, and pico de gallo.  Our other favorite thing to order are their killer milkshakes.  Apple Pie, PB&J, and Nut Crusher are our great loves that we dream of as we go to sleep.  Plus, they’ve got some really great seafood dishes Kristien raves about like lobster, oyster and clam rolls.

So, why have I told you so much about both spots?

Well, if the title and the first question didn’t already give it away, both will come together in Anthony’s new spot on 100 Washington Boulevard in the Harbor Point part of Stamford.  It’s a very similar set up to Mr. Frosty’s in Norwalk:  you’ll walk up to the window, place your order, then take your food and take a seat at one of the picnic benches outside.  Don’t limit yourself, though.  Just walk about a block and you’ll be right on the docks and can stroll along and chomp on a burger, sip on a shake, or tackle a monster sundae.

You’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful spring, summer, and fall with them because they’ll be open from March through November, too. Anthony is still tweaking the menu a bit, but you’ll have nearly all the same options from The Beach Burger in your gluttonous arsenal as well as pretty much all the ice creams from Mr. Frosty’s.

Celebrate National Burger Month with a Fairfield County Burgerpedia

1 May

Kristien's classic burger at Station Eats, all loaded and ready to go

May is the holiest of all months.  Yes, carnivores, it is when we pay homage to our best friend:  the hamburger.  See, May is National Burger Month and there’s no better way to say you’re American than shoveling down a hamburger with fries and a shake.  In order to celebrate, we’ve put together a nice city guide of the hamburgers that we have come to love for one reason or another.  This is not necessarily a list of the best burgers in Fairfield County, but is more like a burgerpedia of the burgers we’ve had for you to consult should the need to chow down hits you…and we know it will…nightly…every hour…for eternity.  After you check out the list, we’re wondering which of these spots you love the most and what is your favorite burger/burger toppings of all time?  Also check us out on Twitter and Facebook for beautifully touching hamburger quotes all this month.  Om nom nom nom.

Darien

Whole Foods:  We got two black pepper crusted with Parmesan patties to go on Sunday that rocked our worlds.  Lots of burger varieties for your bbq’n needs.

Fairfield

Circle Diner:  Home of an awesome turkey burger.  Order it with grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, bacon, and mozzarella.

Stamford

Fairway Market:  Another great place to get high quality meat with great flavors for your bbq.  Just be careful because some of their patties are so thick, you’ll need to give them some extra time on the grill or cut them in half.

Napa & Co: Now, you might complain that Station Eats, Beach Burger, or Shake Shack burgers are expensive, but this doesn’t compare to the $26 Napa Wagyu Burger.  Listen to this description and you’ll see why you must order: red onion jam, aged Gouda, black pepper mayo, and rosemary fries.

The Bynum Burger at The Beach Burger

Station Eats:  They have shakes and burgers of the month, seemingly infinite hamburger and hot dog toppings, and what some people call the best veggie burger that they have ever tasted.  Now you can enjoy your burgers out on their patio, too.

New Canaan

Station Eats:  Same awesome food as the Stamford spot, but smaller.  Still, there’s a real charm to this spot:  the epitome of a burger joint.

Norwalk

The Beach Burger:  Killer shakes and excellent burgers here by the water.  Stroll up to the burger bar, then chat n’ chew with friends.  Keep up with their FB and Twitter to see specials and fun events for May.

B.E.C. Burger at Burger Bar & Bistro. Yes, those are french fries.

Burger Bar & Bistro:  Good burgers and frickles that you might threaten people’s lives for.  Also, bring your dog for their doggy menu.

Chocopologie:  Yes, Fritz is world-famous for his chocolate, but don’t overlook the burger here.  While you’re there, try the inventive drinks that you will most likely not see anywhere else.

Bonus Add-in

Mohegan Sun:  They’ve got over 55 different burgers available and also have some specials for you to check out.  Some of these burgers are so good, you’ll definitely be yelling, “Hit me again!” ;)  Thanks to Dave at Mohegan for letting us know about this!  Here’s a list of the participating restaurants:

Let’s give you a few reasons why you need to hit up Beach Burger on April 14, or any day for that matter:

1) 2011 OmNomy Winner for best hamburger in Fairfield County

2) Excellent burgers that are fresh, never frozen, and full of flavor.  Lots of varieties to try, too.  Their classic is great and The Bynum is an experience to be experienced.

3) Milkshakes that should be listed as drugs by the FDA because they are seriously that good.  Our faves are Apple Pie and the PB&J.

4) A new menu with hot dogs and seafood that we want to try badly.

5) Our review that we wrote for CBS Connecticut sums it up, too.

The Juicy Deets on the New Station Eats – Stamford, CT

27 Feb

Ladies and gents: Station Eats in Stamford!

We had just driven into Stamford after our trip from Orlando and we knew what we had to do.  Yeah, the flight was super early so we had breakfast at 7, so by 1 we were starving.  A hungry Danny is a grumpy Danny, so we parked on Atlantic Street by the Palace Theater and walked up the Stairway to Heaven past Izet’s, aka the stairway that takes you to Station Eats.  They’ve only been open here for a few days, but you might have had their food at the original New Canaan spot.  We came in and one of the owners, Nick Type, rushed over to thank us for coming in and telling us that he was just about to write us so that we could try out the new food.  Seriously, we’re all synched up when it comes to burgers, fries, dogs, and shakes. Seth Leifer, the other owner, was there too and was beaming with excitement behind the counter.

Gentle reminders on where to go…

Immediately we were struck with how awesome Station Eats in Stamford is.  There is a giant communal table with lots of other tables nearby for you to sit at. If you’ve been to the New Canaan spot, you’ll see the difference.  Also, starting soon, there will be tables and umbrellas set up on their front deck.  Yes, a beer garden in the heart of Stamford.  Beautiful!  Bright orange arrows push you along like booster power ups and take you to the menu.  Let’s recap so you don’t mess up the system:

The Station Eats menu in all its glory

1)  Look at menu and decide what you want.

2) Order your grilled item and fries.

3) Have them pile on your toppings:  free and premium.

4) Order your shakes and drinks.

5) Pay up, now with credit card as an option too!

I ordered a burger with lettuce, tomato, onions, extra pickles, some mayo and ketchup.  To go with that I had a vanilla milkshake with Fruity Pebbles and cheese fries.  Danny had a hot dog with station chili, relish, grilled onions, and jalapeños.  He washed that down with a coffee milkshake with bits of oreo mixed up and station chili fries.  Along with all this goodness, Nick also gave us a try of his chocolate bourbon shake aka the U-Turn.  Here we go:

The Burger

The burger, plain and simple…

The burgers at Station Eats are always cooked to perfection for me:  nice and pink on the inside, a great medium rare.  Ah, the way it should be.  The patties are juicy, full of flavor, and aren’t too big.  The hamburger buns are just right, too, and complement the burgers nicely.  All natural, organically raised local beef makes for a great burger.

The Fries

Station chili and cheese fries, YUM

Fries here are crinkle cut and can be ordered plain, with cheese, with station chili, or with cheese and station chili.  They come out crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle.  Really great fries, especially with the chili or cheese.

The Dogs

Spicy and chili wiener

The bun came out grilled nicely with a buttery taste, so good.  The dog was grilled up nicely and the toppings just made it right for Danny.  Overall, a great beef hot dog, though you can also get a veggie or chicken dog.  The station chili added a nice deep flavor, while the jalapeños gave the dog a nice kick.

The Shakes

Danny took down 2 out of 3 of these!

I’m never one to finish a shake, even if I do love it, but my vanilla and Fruity Pebble shake was so damn good I drank it down to the last bits.  The shakes work simple here:  medium or large; order vanilla, chocolate, coffee, or strawberry ice cream;  add in Fruity Pebbles, Oreos, chocolate pearls, or graham crackers.  Danny couldn’t get enough of the coffee and Oreo milkshake and recommends that combo.

Don’t be disappointed because the shake (and burger) of the month is still alive and active here.  Follow Station Eats on FB or sign up for their e-mails to get info on what shake and burger will be featured each month.  Well, onto their new milkshakes, the adult kind:  Hi-Octane Shakes.  The final pen strokes are being signed on the liquor license, so you can expect to have these shakes by the end of February/start of March.  We’ll update you on that, of course.

As I said before, Nick let us try the chocolate bourbon with Oreo shake, the U-Turn.  This was great, had a nice kick from the bourbon, but still managed to be refreshing. It’ll be perfect to have a dog or burger, sit outside in the beer garden, and sip on the adult shakes.  Ahhh.  You’ll also be able to try Red Light with vodka, strawberry, graham crackers, and vanilla ice cream or Freeway with Kahlua, vodka, and vanilla ice cream.  A medium is $7.25 and a large is $8.15, still cheaper than most bars that you’d hit up…score.

The Drinks

Ever feel taken advantage of when you hit up a restaurant and they bleed you dry when you order beer and wine?  Well, drinks won’t be too much here.  You can buy glasses of beer (PBR, Magic Hat #9, Narragansett, and Brooklyn Lager) and even pitchers at drinkworthy prices.  Yup, PBR pitchers at $9 and Magic Hat #9 pitchers at $16.  You can also order red, white, or sparkling wine at very reasonable prices.  A Pinot Noir at $20, a Pinot Grigio at $15, and a half bottle of Proscecco at $14 are just some of the deals here.

The Future

Danny and Nick talking. Look at all that space, too!

Station Eats seems to have a bright future in Downtown Stamford.  There will be a beer garden for those beautiful days when you have to be outside.  They plan to have live music pumping out, making the garden even more fun, too.  And, when things go well in Stamford, they will consider staying open later on Friday and Saturday so that you can get your eats and drink on.  The food is great quality here and it won’t take long to make up the burger or dog of your dreams.  There are lots of vegetarian options and you can even get a Station Salad for those lighter days when a burger might push you over the edge.  The one obstacle that Station Eats faces is their location, but once people begin to see that they are up the stairs, there won’t be a problem anymore.  They’ll be installing some signs and lots of people are getting the word out.  So, remember that you can always head back (at least) once a month to try out their burger and shake of the month.  Or, if you’re one of those lucky people that work in Downtown Stamford, you’ve got the perfect lunch spot to hit up every single day.  Work’s not that bad anymore, is it?
