Do Valentine’s Day Your Way at These Grubtastic Spots – Lower Fairfield County, CT

OmNomCT Gets Gangsta on Valentine's Day

Romantic, fancy dinners on Valentine’s Day are overrated, ya know?  Ya shell out one, two hundred dollars, maybe ya get lucky, then you’re back to the same routine on February 15.  Well, we’ve got the solution for you.  A brief listing, city by city, of our favorite grubtastic spots that make you and your sweetie say, “Screw what the MAN says we should do for Valentine’s Day.”  Sure, maybe you won’t be getting smooth lovin’ after these hefty meals, but you’ll come out satisfied, grinning from ear to ear, and—if you’re lucky—escape without much indigestion.   Well, most importantly, you’ll win the respect of your darlin’ for picking such delicious spots.  And, if your significant other has a problem with it, well, at least you now know he/she is not “the one.” So here it is:

Darien:  Gofer Ice Cream

Take Sugarbritches down to Gofer (it’s always a good day to…Gofer Ice Cream) for a filling, sweet-laden dinner.  Sundaes, banana splits, cones, twists, Razzles, GOFER Ice, and (psshhh) vitamin laced smoothies.  Great place to take your date if you want to knock yourselves into a sugar induced coma to forget how lame Valentine’s Day is.  Kristien’s fave is the Coconut Chocolate Chip, while I’ll try anything there once…or twice…or thrice.

Fairfield:  Super Duper Weenie

OmNomCT’s official favorite hot dog spot.  Swine and dine your sweetheart overlooking the sizzling grill or on the sturdy park benches.  Lots of dog variety, but my fave is the Georgia Red Hot.  Make sure to get a huge ol’ batch of fries to go with your meal.  Oh, and throw in the shake too. You can’t go wrong here. Ever.

There's a reason why there's only one cone left...REDONKULOUS!

Greenwich:  Garden Catering

It doesn’t get much more romantic than this, kiddos.  Shove up to the counter, put your order in, pay, then chomp away on your meal with your soulmate…in your car, out of a paper-bag.  Embarrass your date by presenting your Nugget Points card and proclaiming that you are a valued customer…a VIP, even. 1,000 points earns you a Garden Catering tie, so why not wear this to Valentine’s Day dinner?   Make sure to get the nugget, fries, and cones special for a mere $7.  Not bad to get a Valentine’s Day meal at around $15, huh?

New Canaan:  Station Eats

The smell of grilled beef wafts through the air, enticing you and your lovey dove to new romantic heights.  With fresh, often local and organic ingredients, you can’t go wrong here, especially if you get the burger and shake of the month.  Sure, when you’re done your breath might melt metal because of the onions, but that’s one of the advantages of monogamy:  unconditional love.

Norwalk:  Los Molcajetes

Authentic Mexican food, lit under a fine neon light, set off in the perfect setting of a strip mall.  Allow the waiter to show you to your table and soon you’ll both be swooning at the food, including the taco choices.  Do yourself a favor and try the Alabre taco:  beef and bacon coming together as one.  Could this be symbolic of you and your cutie, together as one on this fine day?  Yes, of course.  Latin lovers know best.

Sausage, hot oil, stingers, cherry peppers, and onions at Colony Grill

Stamford:  Colony Grill

Make momma proud…don’t you want a date just like mom?  Perfect for that annoying, picky date  (or spouse) who just can’t decide what to order.  It’s really simple:  sausage,  pepperoni,  meatball,  mushroom,  onions,  black olives, cherry peppers, stingers, hot oil, anchovies,  peppers, and bacon to put on top.  Heck, order it plain.  That though, is a sin and worthy of breaking up.  Hot oil must be poured liberally on ANY pie here.

Westport:  The Black Duck Cafe

Sometimes dates (or marriages) might not go so well, so you always need options.  The Black Duck Cafe is waterfront, so you can always toss over that annoying partner that chews too loudly, won’t give you the remote, or has wandering eyes.  After you’ve tossed the loser overboard, sink your teeth into delicious burgers, toss back some brewskis, and contemplate how Guy Fieri loves this joint, too.

So, what are your favorite grubtastic spots to hit up?  Let us know!

Dan, to replace Black Duck in Westport I’d do Westfair Fish and Chips on Post Road near Exit 19 — a taste of the shore in mid Feb. BYOB and grab one of the two or three tables, Go for epynomous Fish and Chips. Or mounds of fried clams. Rhode Island Chowder. Hot lobster roll. Soft crabcake. Scrumptous and unpretentous. Best seafood value on the Gold Coast. Am salivating.

Oh yeah? We’ve gotta head there. I don’t like cold lobster roll because of the mayo, so I jump on the opportunity to try the hot lobster rolls! :) Why did I not know about this place? Kristien lived in Westport for a while and we haunted Westport and the surrounding areas quite a bit. Maybe she knows it. Either way, we’ll take your advice and try it out. Thanks Lou. Sounds like a post to us ;)

Black Duck is the most overated joint in FFD Cty. DD&D catapulted it’s rep. ok, the burger is good, but in the league of Shake Shack, Cory’s, Cherry Street East, et al.

Last time we were there, three people in the party got sick.

Usually love your recs, guys, but this cheap date still isn’t worth the money.

Three people sick? Um, not good. We were there a few years back with Kristien’s parents and thought it was fun. But, if you’re getting sick, not cool.

Take the money and run somewhere else? :) Do you have a grubtastic spot you’re recommend? We love to add new spots to our list.

ChowderBoy likes your outfits and says “THEY LIKE COLONY TOO???? DO THEY KNOW HOW MUCH WE LIKE IT????” So just so you know. We like it. A lot. We go to the one in Fairfield though. In fact, he and I had a date there on Wednesday…

Awesome! Colony is a great spot but we’ve never been to the Fairfield spot. Go ChowderBoy!
