The premise of Farm to Chef Week (September 15-21) in Connecticut is pretty simple. Use the freshest, most local ingredients from Connecticut farms at restaurants and different venues throughout the state. While some of the restaurants that are participating such as ON20 in Hartford, Zinc in New Haven, or Rizzuto’s might not surprise you because they already make good use of local ingredients, there might be some surprises for you on the list. We’re talking about local schools like Branford, Newtown, Westport, and Wilton as well as colleges such as Fairfield University and University of Connecticut in Storrs.
When you visit any of the restaurants listed below here during Connecticut Farm to Chef Week, you can expect special menus and offerings. Each participant must offer at least four foods or courses that feature one or more Connecticut Grown items. And, if a venue allows alcohol, they need to also offer at least one Connecticut wine. As for the farms listed below, they will be offering specialty items and produce during CT Farm to Chef Week. Just check here to see what each farm is offering!’
And, to kick things off, stop by Hill-Stead Farmers’ Market in Farmington from 11-2pm on 9/15. Chion Wolf of WNPR will be the MC of the event that will feature some great chefs using local ingredients picked up that day at the Farmers’ Market. Plus, as you watch the cooking demos, you just might get to sample the food from:
- Ken Scalzo, Sodexo at the University of Bridgeport
- Jim Wishneski, Tisane Euro-Asian Cafe
- Jeff Crawford and Van Hurd, Jordan Caterers
- Drew McLachlan, Whole Foods Market
We’re excited that Farm to Chef Week is back, but we’re even more excited about the prospect of more people becoming aware of all the amazing produce and meats that come from our own state. The more local we keep it, the better.

I’m bummed that I only see two listings for participating restaurants in Stamford… Plan B and Rizzutos… Surprised not to see more, but I guess it’s a start! What a great concept for CT to put into action.

Yeah, we noticed that too. Huge support for this program from New Haven and Hartford areas, but not too much from Fairfield County. But, yes, we’re on our way and we’re getting there. The good news is, though, that we covered this seem event last year and it seems that there are more restaurants and schools participating this year from Fairfield County! :) Nice for some progress.
