Are we showing our age by understanding the tagline to Two Roads‘ new beer, Route of all Evil? Yes, we remember watching Tales from the Crypt on HBO and being oddly frightened by the Cryptkeeper. But, Two Roads’ new brew is nothing to get all nervous and freaked out about. Again, we’re happy with the name of this beer, just like their last seasonal: Roadsmary’s Baby. They are fun, clever, and are good hooks to get you to try the beer.
Beer: Route of all Evil
Brewery: Two Roads Brewing Company in Stratford, CT
Style: Black Ale
Color and appearance: After the pour, there was about an inch of brown foamy head that took a couple of minutes to fizzle down. As for the color, it’s black. Not brown, or even brown-black. Black.
Smell: Oddly enough, it was hard to pick out smells and aromas with this brew. There was a slight note of roasted malts, though.
Taste: Route of all Evil is hoppy right off the bat. The hop stays, mixes in with some flavors of burnt caramel, brown sugar, and molasses, then fades, then you get a slightly bitter finish. This is a pretty “meaty” beer, having a good deal of substance to it. It doesn’t seem to be 7.5%, though. This makes it a little easier to take down as compared to heftier beers that clock in at 9 or even 10% ABV.
IBUs: ?
Background: Two Roads and Brewer Phil Markowski are known for their golden colored brews. So, they definitely took things in a new direction with Route of All Evil Black Ale. This is a seasonal brew, too, so it’s something that you need to get your greasy paws on sooner rather than later.
Pairing: Because this beer has some major cojones, we wouldn’t recommend pairing it with anything light because it will be too overpowering. Instead, think about dishes that have a nice amount of fat or are rich. We had ours with a pizza at Coalhouse in Stamford that featured mozzarella, poblano, bacon marmelade, and two eggs.
Thoughts: Two Roads has only been open for just about a year, but they have really expanded their beer arsenal tremendously. What’s clear is that Two Roads and Head Brewer Phil Markowski aren’t scared of taking chances at all. This can definitely be seen here with Route of All Evil. This is their first dark beer and we have to say that it’s a success from our beer-buds. Admittedly, strong hoppy brews aren’t our favorite kinds, but we can dig this beer. It’s not the kind of beer that we’d go drinking by itself, but would need to have with some snacks or some substatinal food. The only thing we wished is that it was more of a 3D beer that had more depth and complexity. Most that we’ve talked to love this beer, while there are a handful who aren’t fans stating that it’s light for being a Black Ale.

Ooooooh, fancy. We have not been brave enough to try out that Trader Joe’s yet! There was an actual line of cars just to get into the parking lot! :O

Go one light further and park in the back of the shopping center next door. Slightly less insane and so much easier getting out. Nice review on 2Roads…
