If you’ve been to Bar Sugo in Norwalk, chances are you’ve been greeted by the warm smile of Megan D’Amico. She began there as General Manager and soon took charge of the wine portfolio, expanding the popular Norwalk spot with more wine and even vino-focused dinners. While she has done amazing work there, Megan is still up for other challenges and wants to expand her culinary focus, too.
She shared with us, “I grew up with my mother who has a passion for art and is a great artist and my father who owned his own deli and catering so it was natural for me to fuse the two and go to CIA for Baking and Pastry Arts Management. I knew I wanted to do baking and pastry since freshman year of high school…and my fiancé [Pat Pascarella of Bar Sugo] gave me the motivation to get started in a new direction.”
Well, that training, creativity, and passion is paying off with the launch of her brand new bakery business, J’aime ça cake, which roughly translates into “I like that cake” which is her tagline. Based on the variety and beauty of the cakes that we’ve seen from Megan, it should be more like “I love that cake.”
But, it won’t be just cakes…Megan will also be baking up lots of other goodies such as cookies of all sorts, decadent brownies, and boatloads of pies. And, if you head to Bar Sugo for dinner, you just might be lucky enough to try some of her inventions like the Date Cake with Brown Sugar Caramel that was served recently and is pictured above on the top right.
Right now she is renting out the Bar Sugo kitchen in the mornings and baking away, though as her business grows she’d love to expand and open up her own shop. For now, you can reach Megan at the J’aime ça cake Facebook page or by calling (203) 253-6119. She’ll soon have a site up to make ordering simple, so make sure to give her bakery a like to keep up to date.
