The food revolution will be televised…and will make its way to New Canaan on Saturday, May 17, from 9:30-11:30. That’s when Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution will take the town and its Pop Up Park (off of Elm) by storm. The idea behind Jamie’s Food Revolution Day is helping the children of the world to not only eat healthier, but to fight obesity, find ingredients for meals from local and sustainable sources, and for families to spend more time together cooking and eating.
At the center of the Food Revolution in New Canaan will be 150 kids who sign up for a Bravery Passport. By pre-registering here (tickets are limited, so sign up quickly), children will have the chance to go around town, trying food they might not normally eat at different restaurants and shops via a “food trail.” If they complete a task, they get a stamp, and when they fill up their passports they can be entered into a prize drawing. Kids can pick up their passports in Pop Up Park at 9:30 and then be on their way to do some trailblazing.
Helping to put this day together is the dynamic duo of Chef Silvia Baldini of Strawberry & Sage and Rachel Lampen of RLPR Ltd and HamletHub. They have been named as 2014 Food Revolution Ambassadors and join volunteers from Branford, Meriden, and Middletown in helping bring healthy and sustainable eating to Connecticut. In a recent press release, Rachel Lampen had this to share:
“We wanted to create something fun for all ages – from small kids all the way up to teenagers from New Canaan and the surrounding area. The day itself is all about trying different things and enjoying learning about various food types and flavors. Parents are encouraged to accompany the children, and visit the many wonderful restaurants in New Canaan. At this stage we really want to thank the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce for supporting us and enabling us to use the Pop Up Park on a busy Saturday morning. The restaurants have been terrific in dreaming up exciting and challenging things to try – now we just need the kids!”
Here is a list of the confirmed restaurants and food shops that are participating in the Food Revolution:
Rosie’s, Station Eats, Boulevard 18, Peachwave Yogurt, Fjord Fisheries, South End, Chef Luis, Elm, Picador, Loopie Doop’s Cookies at Sole, Strawberry & Sage, No 109 Cheese & Wine, Mrs Green’s Natural Market, Baldanz, and Goldenberry.
