A Connecticut bar makes Esquire’s list of Best Bars in America 2014

Connecticut gets into the mix on Esquire’s Best Bars in America 2014 list!

Okay New Haven, we get it…you’re pretty awesome.  You get your own billboards on 95, advertising your famous and award-winning pizza pies.  You get Yale…and you get included on a list that includes some of the best bars in America.  Specifically, you get included on Esquire’s 9th annual Best Bars in America guide, put together by David Wondrich, Esquire’s knowledgable cocktail expert.

While Wondrich’s list spans the entire country, from Seattle, to Portland, to LA, to Houston, to Richmond, Boston, NYC, and it also features Anchor Restaurant on 272 College Street in New Haven.  According to Wondrich, when you go you need to order a gin martini with a twist.  Here’s what he had to say about Anchor:

“There were cocktail bars in America before the current craze. Of course, then you had to call them cocktail lounges. Swank joints when they opened, way back in the Philip Marlowe days of the 1930s and 1940s, by the end of the 20th century the survivors had worn into a dark, sexy seediness. They were dangerous to your equilibrium—when you went in for a martini or three (basically the only cocktail they could reliably execute), you went in for whatever the evening would bring. The Anchor is one of those survivors, and though it is a perfectly nice place—warm and comfortable, with a great old jukebox and a way with the martini and the more basic of its relations—you still very quickly get the sense that you’d best step carefully, because the ice there runs thin.”

Here’s the rest of the Best Bars in America 2014 list.  Please check out Wondrich’s post for all the details and tips on what to order at each spot.

This is great! Connecticut is on the Roll!
Now, can I ask a favor? You guys have much more extensive bar experience than me, so can you please explain the last line of the quote? “you’d best step carefully, because the ice there runs thin” – what exactly does it mean?

It is great news, right? Go CT! As far as that line, we think he might have been referring to the clientele at the bar…maybe not the nicest people?
