Fairfield County Food News, Vol. 7: Wieners, Bees, Horses, Bourbon, and Summer Fun

83 degree days?  We’ve made it, brahh!  So, you best believe that we’re going to share with you some great events for you to enjoy some time outside…even some all summer long.  As always, these are new listings that we haven’t covered on our blog yet…no need to be repetitive, huh?  The full list of events can be found here if you’re interested.

June 6

Oh beehive!  That’s cuz one of the world’s largest observation beehives is coming to Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk, starting at 11 am.  The hive will hold more than 50,000 honeybees and measures 4X5 feet.  Seems like a Common Core question in the making, huh?  The honey will eventually be collected (over 100 lbs. worth) and will then be sold right at Stew Leonard’s.  At the height of the season, there will be 75,000 bees inside!

KC and Anne will be playing the Station Eats Stamford outdoor beer garden starting at 6:30.  Get some burgers, get some brews, and just chill.

June 7

Wienerpalooza 2014 at Bridge St. Wienery has finally arrived!  Come by at 12:30 for the hot dog eat contest and see who the Biggest Wiener Winner is!  In addition to their great burgers and dogs, they’ll also have popcorn, cotton candy, music, t-shirt giveaways, and plenty of games to play.  Happy two years in business, guys!

Beardsley Zoo is hosting their annual Wild Wine, Beer and Food Safari 2014 fundraiser from 6-9 pm right at the zoo.  Tickets are $60 each ($65 at the gate) or if you buy 4 or more, they’ll cost only $55 each.  There’s also an option for VIP tix that are $100 each and get you “Behind the Scenes” access from 4:30-5:30.  In addition to over 100 different wines and 60 different brews, there will be live music, a silent auction, a raffle, and lots of food.  Some of the participating vendors include Black Rock Cafe, Carl Anthony’s Trattoria, Joey C’s Roadhouse BBQ, Liquid Lunch, Johnny Utah’s, Smoke & Bones BBQ, DiGrazia Vineyards, Onyx Moonshine, Berkshire Brewing Co., Captain Lawrence, and more.  Full list and ticket info here.  Also, if you buy any wine or beer at the event, 10% of the sales will go right to Beardsley.

Join Dew Drop Inn in their fight to raise money for Relay for Life, held at 2 pm at 118 Canal Street in Shelton.  As of today, they have raised the most money:  an incredible $15,130 that will be donated to the American Cancer Society.  When you’re done, do drop in to the Dew Drop Inn for some great burgers, wings, and killer craft beer.

June 8

Let’s do some Horsing Around for Charity at the Greenwich Polo Club.  It all starts at 12 pm and goes until 3 with BBQ, food trucks, wine, microbrews, activities for kids, shopping, live bluegrass, a Bloody Mary bar, one-on-one golf strength training and more.  Check out College Creamery, Fortina, Greenwich Wine and Spirits, Lobstercraft, Melt Mobile, Nourish Snacks, Pepsi, Preppy Pig BBQ, Prima Dolce, Restaurant North, Spiked Seltzer, Tea-rirific Ice Cream, and more!  Then, head back to your plot of grass for the match at 3!  Tickets are $60 in advance or $65 at the door.  Money raised will benefit Pegasus Therapeutic Riding.

June 12

For just $10, get an exclusive tasting (including some rare finds) of Jefferson’s Bourbon at Plan B in Stamford from 6-8 pm.  In addition, Plan B will be pairing up some passed apps to match with the spirits being poured.  You get one free pour, the rest are extra.  Plus, Trey Zoeller (owner/founder/distiller) will be on hand to talk about Jefferson’s.

Summer Fun

Take a cruise of Norwalk Harbor then stop by Mama’s Boy Southern Table & Refuge for a 3 course dinner for just $57…plus tax and tip.  Here’s the menu so you can begin to plan out your attack.  The dinners go down every Friday from 6/27-8/29/14 and require you to make a reservation by visiting the Seaport website.

Check out some classic movies in Commons Park (101 Commons Park South) in the Harbor Point area of Stamford.  Movies are free and begin at dusk.  Here’s the summer schedule:  6/6:  Top Gun; 6/13:  Ghost; 6/20:  The Dark Night; 6/27:  Frozen.  Before the movies, stop by Henri’s for some snacks to munch on during the show or even hit up Paloma which hopefully will be open by then.  p.s.  If you sing “Let it Go”  during the showing on 6/27 we will hunt you down and smack you with a fish.


Kayem is the official hot dog and sausage of Fenway Park and they’re looking for you to Create the Next Fenway Frank.”  Just come up with the best combo for a Fenway Frank and submit it to their FB page by June 20.  After some thinking, Kayem will present their Top 5 Fenway Franks then fans will vote for their favorites on FB.  The top 2 combos will present their hot dogs at a free lunchtime event on July 23 (Hot Dog Day).  The winner will then be announced and starting on June 28, the winner’s hot dog will be featured at Fenway for an entire year.  In addition, the grand prize winner gets a $1,000 cash gift card and the runner up even gets a $500 cash gift card.  Get those entries in!
