CT Beer + Food News, Vol 19: Major Props, Deals, Crazy CT Brews + Events

4 Sep

Welcome to September…er, July…er, why is it so damn hot?  Well, that’s because summer ain’t over yet, people.  Stop saying it’s over!  Really, we’ve got a few more weeks to go…let’s soak up all the remaining dregs and go cray cray, okay?  So, let us help ya get all liquored up and feed those hungry bellies.  Plenty of fresh (not oldies or moldies) news to share with you such as fundraisers for Delaney’s Tap Room, national props for a CT city and two local businesses, deals on meals, and what’s brewing in the CT beer scene.

🍸🍴 9/4 Celebrate SoNo from 6-8 with free cocktails and small bites from Match, The Stand, and Spiked Seltzer at the Lillian August Warehouse Outlet at 85 Water Street in SoNo.  Also enjoy an additional 20% off sale prices for the night.   Make sure to RSVP to this Moffly Media sponsored event.

🚐 9/5 Fryborg will be hitting up Church and Wall Street in New Haven on Friday to help support the people affected by the fire that destroyed Delaney’s Tap Room.  All of their profits and tips will go right to Delaney’s staff.

🍴🎤 9/10 The English Beat will be hitting up FTC so, rock and roll on down to The Chelsea in Fairfield for a rock & roll inspired food and drink menu.  You can check out the specials before or after the show, but they recommend reservations by calling (203) 254-8200.

🚐 9/13 Check out PopShop‘s latest get together from 10-3 pm featuring lots of shopping, games, live music, and food trucks.  Hell yes.  It’s Bodega, Lobstercraft, The Buzz Truck, and Spud Stud along with some great food vendors, too, like Dough & Co., Prima Dolce, and Dash n Drizzle.  This month’s PopShop will be at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, located at 385 Center Street in Southport.  Admission is free, as always.

🏆 9/13 + 9/20 See Stamford and New Haven through new eyes as you compete with a team in the Urban Scavenger Races.  Blast your way through local shops, restaurants, then end with a par-tay just for you.

🎮 Dave + Busters, slated to open on September 22 in Manchester is looking for people to hire.  Food, drinks AND games?  Come on now!

🎨 Now-9/20 Meli Melo is featuring the photography of Craig Poler at their Greenwich restaurant.  Sales will benefit Greenwich Kids in Crisis, so if you see something you love, pick it up while you’re sipping on some juices and cafe, or while you’re downing some crepes.

👍 Huffington Post recently published a list of the Top 11 Foodie Cities in America and New Haven made the list.  Woot woot.  Now, granted they heaped praise upon the pizza scene in New Haven, mentioning everybody’s favorites, but they paid short shrift to every other kind of restaurant that makes New Haven…well, New Haven.  Thanks, though.

👍 Mike’s Organic Delivery based out of Stamford has recently received national recognition by being named a 2014 Martha Stewart American Made Awards Nominee and Finalist.  Also making the Nominee and Finalist list is the killer awesome ice cream that we love to nom on:  Tea•riffic based out of Norwalk.  Congrats to both and we hope that of the 1,000 Finalists, you make it to the Final 10 Champions!

👍 Jax & Co. in Norwalk is just about ready to open its doors.  Like their sister spot Mama’s Boy Southern Table & Refuge, Jax & Co will feature a “Low Country Kitchen” and will also serve Stumptown Coffee (damn good stuff, yo).  They’ll be filling a major need in the SoNo area by providing deli and “counter” food, as well as to-go items for that quick meal.  Jax & Co is located at 46 North Main Street, close to the Aquarium.

Beer News and Events

🍻 Kent Falls Brewing and Powder Hollow are two new breweries here in CT that are slated to open in November.  That’s surely something to be thankful for.  Gobble on that, turkey.

🍻 The Brass City Brewfest, one of CT’s best, pours out into Waterbury’s Library Park this Saturday (9/6) from 1-5 pm.  Tix are $30 in advance or $35 at the door.  Plus, you can get a taste of Belgian and international brews at a special tent from 12:30-3:30 for an extra $10.  For more info, check it.

🍯 Philsamic is a brand new beer from Two Roads that might win some major awards for being the most creative and interesting beer to hit the local scene.  It’s an ode to headbrewer Phil Markowski and his 25 years devoted to the art of craft brewing.  Philsamic is made with 14 year old Italian balsamic vinegar and aged in red wine barrels for 20 months.  This sour brew will be released into 750ml bottles during their next rare beer release which is scheduled for October 25.  Damn, son.

🍯 Thimble Island revealed a limited release brew:  their Dark Pumpkin Porter.  Right now it’s available only at the brewery, but the plan is to release it to nearby bars and restaurants.  We need that in our lives bad…hear that Coalhouse and Cask?  Wink wink, nudge nudge.

🍯 Cottrell Brewing Company has a special collaboration beer with Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center.  Their collabo?  A Mushroom Beer made with local grey oyster mushrooms.  Get your tickets to DPNC Mushroom Fest here…and wow, what fun-ghis those people are.

🍻 More from Two Roads:  they just got a seven barrel pilot system so get ready for some small batch brews that will ONLY be available in the tasting room.  Get ready…they are looking to start pouring these very rare and one-of-a-kind brews in November!
