CT Food News, Vol. 24: Brews, BBQ, Balls, Chili, Funghi, Farms + More

9 Oct

And…here we go! A ton of things are going on in Fairfield County (and nearby) that you definitely need to be a part of. So, check those calendars, text your friends, and get out there! And, don’t forget about two more things: CT Beer + Restaurant Week is 10/13-19 and Chowdafest takes over Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk on 10/12.

Okay, getting drinking and eating…

Events and Dinners

10/11 Farmboys Smokin’ BBQ will be at Black Hog (a pair made in heaven!) in Oxford from 1-5. So, make a day of it: pound down some good brews and nom away on some awesome pulled pork, chicken sandwiches, coleslaw, and their killer smoked mac & cheese. How killer? Enough that we’d order that same dish two years in a row for Kristien’s birthday bash.

10/11 The Craft Beer and Chili Challenge hits Hartford at the Old State House from 3-5. Guests will vote on not only the best chili in the state, but also the best brews that they taste. Not enough for you? Sure…then take part in the chili eating contest and see if you can eat more chili in 10 minutes than Bear from Bear’s Smokehouse can eat in just 5. Tickets are $30 for GA, $20 for designated drivers, or $45 for VIP Admission with proceeds going to CPTV and WNPR.

10/13 The Ecco Oktoberfest Beer Dinner that we recently told you about has moved to Columbus Day at 6:30. 4 courses will be paired with 5 brews…looks like a great menu. Tix are $80 and reservations can be made by calling up (203) 744-7500.

10/15 Continue your CT Beer Week celebrations at Greenwood‘s in Bethel from 7-10 with $5 pints and $10 flights of brews including City Steam, Black Hog, New England Brewing, Two Roads, Thimble Island, and Hooker Beer. A portion of sales will be going to Bully Breed Rescue, too, so you’ll be helping out some very needy doggies while you get your groove on. Plus, there will be raffles too!

10/15 Sport Hill Farm in Easton is hosting another Locavore Luncheon. $20 includes a vegetarian family style lunch with drinks and dessert catered by Collyer Catering. E-mail if you’d like to score a seat.

10/16 Feast on the Fall Fungal Foray mushrooming up from 10-2 at at the Garden Education Center in Cos Cob. You’ll learn all about mushrooms and molds that you can find ’round these parts via a walking tour. Registration is $35 for an adult or $20 for children.

10/18 From now until 10/18, Heights Pizza in Darien will donate 10% of your orders to help fund the ever-popular Tokeneke Pumpkin Carnival. The carnival is on 10/18 and goes from 10-4 pm at 7 Old Farm Road in Darien.

10/20 Craft 260 in Fairfield is hosting a Stone Brewing beer dinner at 6 pm.  Tickets are $90 with tax and tip included. For more info, call ’em up at (203) 955-1745.

11/5 The Meatball Challenge of New Haven County is on its way! The challenge and ballfest goes from 6-9 pm at Gateway Community College. Tix are $45 for GA or $55 for an All Access Pass.

Props and Openings

The NY Islanders know where to go for good food: that’s why they recently ordered delivery from Hacienda Villa in Bridgeport. A sister restaurant to Casa Villa in Stamford, Hacienda Villa brought some awesome Mexican to the boys right in the locker room.

The Stand Juice Company is now open at 31 Wall Street in SoNo!

Back East Brewing Company in Bloomfield will be donating $1 for each growler fill and 6 pack sale on Fridays in October to breast cancer research. And, if you wear pink on Fridays, they’ll give you a Back East Glass with any ol’ beer buy. Also, they’ll have pink Back East shirts for sale for just $15 with 100% of the sales going right to breast cancer research.

To the love and ire of many, Chick-fil-A has opened in Brookfield. Before they even opened, people were lined up and even camped to get their first opening day tastes.

BusinessInsider.com recently created a list of the best brews from every state. CT’s claim to fame? None other than New England Brewing’s Imperial Stout Trooper. We love this beer, so we are definitely happy with the choice…how about you?

10/14 Come by World of Beer Stamford for not only a Half Full tap takeover, but also a chance to meet and talk with Jon, one of the brewers. In an even more exciting development, they are giving Jon full reign over the WoB infusion towers so who knows what kind of beer and special infusions you could get. Check WoB’s FB for more info.

10/14 Craft 260 is hosting a Two Roads tap takeover, so get your ass in gear and drink up with Roadsmary’s Other Baby, Worker’s Comp Saison, Unorthodox Imperial Stout, Road to Ruin, and Hizzoner Maibock.

CT Beer was on tap at the Great American Beer Festival with Two Roads and Firefly Hollow pouring out some liquid goodness. While CT didn’t take any medals home this year, there’s always next year…and hopefully we get even more CT brewers there!

    Hi Dan & Kristien,
Awesome post. Thank you very much. I just found this blog from HeyStamford and am looking forward to attending some of these events. I am a fan of a good IPA and am planning on finding a few new favorites.

Thanks for finding us…and sticking with us too, Scott! :) We’ll definitely get you there to finding some nice IPAs. You like heavy IPAs or easy, sessionable ones that you can drink all day?
