5 Ways to Help Local Food Banks this Thanksgiving in the Stamford Area

21 Nov

While our blog focuses on the best places to eat, great beer, and fun experiences here in CT, we also like to help give back any way that we can. And, because you are all so freaking awesome, we’re sure you feel the same kinda way that we do. You want to be able to help out people in need. So, we’ve compiled four ways for you to get involved and help local food banks this holiday season. But, please, remember that the need for support is year-long and these organizations can always use your support.

1) If you’re already heading to The Palace in Stamford this weekend to see The Four Freshmen or Warren Miller Entertainment, just bring some cans to help families have a good meal for Thanksgiving. Non-perishable items will be donated to The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County.

2) On 11/25, from 10-7 pm, you can take part in a huge food drive at Fairway Market in Stamford. Non-perishable food items, gift cards, and checks will be donated right to The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County. This event is brought to you by The Palace, 95.9 Fox, and of course it’s made possible through Fairway.

3) People Friendly Stamford is hosting their 2nd Annual Mobile Food Drive on 11/22! Meet at Fairway Market in Stamford at noon, pick up some food to donate, then bike all your goodies over to the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County at 461 Glenbrook Road.

4) If you want to put in some hard work before Thanksgiving dinner, check out the 14th Annual Shippan Turkey Trot! The race pre-show starts 9:30 at 280 Ocean Drive East b/w Shippan and Fairway with the race starting at exactly 10. There is no registration fee this year, so organizers are asking for canned food donations or donations that go directly to Shelter for the Homeless. Register to race (it’s totally acceptable to dress like a turkey or pilgrim, btw) and donate here or the Trot website

5) Sign up for Community Plates, a network of volunteers who travel to local restaurants, markets, and groceries stores to recover food that would normally go to waste. You then pack that food into your car then deliver it to various local shelters or facilities. If you’re already a member, make sure to sign up for some more runs.

Are there any other ways that you like to help give back? Any other food drives that you’d like to share? Please share in the comments.

The local food banks are in dire need of turkeys. Most grocery chains offer a free turkey after you’ve spent a certain amount.

If you’re not in need of the free turkey please consider donating.

Also, many of the local libraries in the area will reduce late fees in exchange for a non perishable item.
