Only six seats left and we’ve got ’em up for grabs! You know you want to!

UPDATE: Congrats to Airen, Alexis, and Ray for snagging 3 pairs of tix to the now completely sold out Kawa Ni Cocktail War Contest! While they were picked randomly, we both debated a long time on the judges spot. In the end, though, we decided to go with Andrea Viscuso.

A few days back we told all about a brand new series of cocktail competitions, hosted by Jeff Marron, the Beverage Manager at LeFarm, The Whelk, and Kawa Ni right in Westport. Each event will feature six talented bartenders and mixologists from across the state who need to work with a sponsored liquor and a secret ingredient that Mimi from Saugatuck Grain and Grape picks. Each event will have three celebrity judges, three food-loving judges, and 30 public judges.

And, that’s where you come in! For the first event on March 22 24, we’ve got three pairs of tickets to Cocktail Wars and to be public judges . . . the last six tickets available, actually! All you need to do to enter is tell us which fresh herb you would use in a cocktail and why. Simply reply to this post with your answer by 4 pm on 3/20 and be sure that you’re free on the night of March 22 24 for a great time! We’ll pick three random winners who will get pairs of tickets.

Winners of this contest should arrive around 5:30 so they can chow away on some free snacks and passed foods, drink some cocktails, and put in a food order so you’ll be ready to go when the contest begins at 6:30.

For more info about the contest, see our previous post.

Lemmon grass, any ingredient that requires bruising, bashing and otherwise pummeling to release it’s essence is worthy of a cocktail…

Pineapple sage. Great in any drink to replace regular sage or mint. Not as strong as mint and sweeter than regular sage. Try it! Or Rosemary is great to quickly light so the aroma from the smoke enhances the taste. And who doesn’t love fire and smoke.

For summer drinks (assuming summer gets here) I would use a syrup made from Lemon Verbana. Make a Gimlet with either vodka or gin, some club soda and lime juice. Add some jaunty lime slices and/or lemon verbana sprigs for garnish. Enjoy!

It would have to be cilantro! It adds such a freshness to cocktails. I especially love it in vodka martinis and tequila anything. It tames a spicy cocktail, compliments any citrus drink, and adds an unexpected pop!

Mint in every cocktail , because it’s reminding me of summer nights. What can be better the glass of prosecco with strawberry purée and mint

We listed March 22 for the event, but it’s actually March 24. Is this still okay for you? You should arrive between 5:30-6:30.

Even though I’ve never tried it, I would use shiso since it’s a cross between basil and mint. Tell me what mojito wouldn’t be good with an herb like that!

What about Shiso, better known as “Japanese basil” (a cross between basil & mint)? Perfect for Kawa Ni & the first competition!

I love doing lemon thyme from my garden with bourbon and some honey, it’s like the summer version of a hot toddy!

Everyone knows basil and mint and rosemary and a few other basics, but how about Scented Geraniums. There are many different varieties that are all very aromatic and pretty such as pineapple, chocolate mint, mint, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon, lime and citrus. You can use the pretty leaves which can be muddled, steeped, and used as a garnish either plain or candied. The flowers also make beautiful garnishes plain or candied. Give them a try.

Ellen, very cool tip and idea! Never, honestly, had scented geraniums in our cocktails! We have had different flowers and such, but that’s just plain awesome. Where are some places where we could find a drink like that?
