CT Food News, Vol. 32: Usher in Spring w/ Events, Deals, Dinner + Drinks

We’ve heard a nasty rumor that spring is just around the corner. Can you believe that? We’re not so sure with some snow in the forecast for tomorrow, but we’ll stick with some positive thoughts to help us plow through this winter ennui. Enough, right? So, get out of those doldrums (kickass vocabulary usage this week, right?) and check out all the great things going on in Fairfield County! Just look at some of the awesome things:


3/20 Mama’s Boy in Norwalk will be hosting their 3rd Annual Customer Appreciation Party, starting at 9. You’ll get a free glass of champagne when you arrive, two for one Dirty South Cocktails, $6 okratinis, 1/2 off glasses of wine, $2 Fireball shots, $20 bourbon bowls, and live music.

3/21 Aji 10 in Norwalk will have live music from BBR starting at 9 pm. They are described as a Latin and American Rock Band. We dig it. 

Jack's Abby Logo3/22 Gallo in Ridgefield will be hosting an “Iron Sommelier” Wine Dinner that starts at 7 pm. This special dinner includes wine that has been selected by Bernard Bouissou of Bernard’s, Tim LaBant of The Schoolhouse at Cannondale, Michael Kaphan of The Farmer and the Fish, and Jeff Henning of Gallo. 3/26 Bailey’s Backyard in Ridgefield (one of our favorite places EVER) is hosting a Jack’s Abby Brewing Beer Dinner that starts at 6:30. Tickets are $80 and that includes tax and tap. Your meal will include 5 courses from Chef Forrest Pasternack paired with some of Jack Abby’s best brews like Saxonator, Hoponius Union, Mass Rising, Framinghammer, and Smoke & Dagger. Morello Bistro in Greenwich is offering up lunch and dinner prix fixe meals for the next two weeks that features a fresh citrus Arugula Salad, Asparagus soup, Chicken Francese, and Fettuccine Primavera.


Props and News

Overshores Brewing Company, CT’s only fully Belgian-style brewery, recently won a gold medal at the Rhode Island Great American Beer and Cider Competition. According to CTBeer.com, they won the Belgian White category by Taking down Allagash White (a damn good beer, might we say).

According to It’s Relevant, Norwalk High School has opened up The Little Bear Cafe. This cafe is a place for students to create and set menus, cook, and think about all the intricacies of the food industry.

Branzino at Morello Bistro in Greenwich CTDolce Cubano is now known as just Dolce. The rebrand also comes along with a new menu that emphasizes seafood and Italian dishes. Don’t worry, their brunch is still around and better than ever!

TEA•RIFFIC Ice Cream is now available at various Stop & Shops throughout the area. If you’ve never had their stuff, we definitely recommend trying their entire line. They’ll be starting off with their Ginger Matcha, Chunky London Mist, and Chamomile. 

Lobster Hut in Milford has now awoken from its briny slumber. Come in for some killer lobster and rolls. 

The Granola Bar in Westport is hiring. They have lots of positions available, so e-mail them at info@thegranolabarct.com or you can also come in and ask to talk with a manager. 

O’Neill’s in SoNo raised over $50,000 via donations and shaving of heads that went right to St. Baldrick’s!


Beer: Tap Takeovers, Events, Deals + More

3/19 Check out Local in SoNo for Ithaca Beer. Co. Pint Night. You’ll get $1 off any Ithaca beer and the first comers get to take home their own pint glass. They’ll have their Cascazilla Red IPA, apricot Wheat, Flower Power IPA, and Daydreamer.

3/19 Closer to Local in Fairfield? Come by for some first tastes of the newly re-opened Stony Creek Brewery in Branford. Not only will the Stony Creek Crew be on hand, but they’ll be pouring out lots of their suds including Dock Time Amber Lager, Cranky Session IPA, and Black Nitro. And, yes, you better believe it, they’ll be giving away some glasses. 

3/19 There’s a New England Brewing Company takeover at Coalhouse Pizza in Stamford starting at 5. Gerard and co. will be pouring out the elusive Fuzzy Baby Ducks, Sea Hag, and 668: Neighbor of the Beast. There will also be two special casks: Gandhi-Bot and Coup Beans.

3/23: Check out Founder’s Night at Cask Republic in Stamford that will feature 20 Founders brews. 20? 20! And, they’ve got a very secret, top secret beer held stored away from Founders. But, they aren’t telling anyone about what it is, even us! You’ll just need to come by starting at 6!

3/23 Ginger Man SoNo will be featuring a meet the brewer night for Brooklyn Brewery. The star of the show will be a 2007 Monster Barleywine (damn!) and a keg of Tripel Smash which marks its CT premiere. 

Ticket’s for the Thread City Hop Fest in Willimantic on May 3 are now on sale. The festival goes from 2-6 that day and is seen as one of CT’s best beer tests. Tix are just $35 per person.

Stony Creek in Branford had a recent “soft” opening and people have been raving about the space, some saying that it’s CT’s most stunning brewery. How’s the beer, though? Well, we’ll have to see, but we did have some tastes a few months back and we were pleased. Want to do your own experiments? Sure thing! Here are their hours for March: Fridays from 3-8, Saturdays from 12-8, and Sundays from 12-6.

Kent Falls Brewing has started to distribute it’s first beer, a nummy saison to restaurants throughout the state. Check out their site for locations.

    I’m hoping spring comes soon! It seems to be drawing people out of their homes and into restaurants here in Fairfield County.
