CT Food News, Vol. 35: Food Challenges, Props, Deals, Outside Dining, Recipes + More

So, first it was nonstop snow. Snow, snow, snow, and more snow all over the place. Well, this week has been that way, but just with rain. Yeah, we know, we can’t complain at all, but there have been a few nights where it’s been that crazy Lord of the Rings fogginess where you feel like there are orcs and other creatures lurking in the dark. But, anyway, it looks like we’re seeing the end of the rain for a bit and will have a really kickass weekend and week ahead, so why not celebrate the hell out of it with some great events and deals going on here in Fairfield County? Plus, you better recognize that we’ve got some great local food news to share, the latest on some food challenges, and some great stuff going on with the CT Beer scene. 

Deals, Steals + Events

There’s always lots of live music at The Fez in Stamford. On 4/12 Traditional Irish Session will play at 7, on 4/15 there will be Strangled Darlings at 7, and on 4/16 there will be the Michael Stark Trio at 8.

Hana Tokyo in Fairfield has special $7 lunch specials for a limited time, so get on down for some great sushi and Japanese food.

4/10 Mama’s Boy in SoNo is hosting its 2nd Annual Customer Appreciation Party with drink specials all night, a free glass of champagne for each person, $20 bourbon bowls, music, and dancing.

4/11 Pacific Cycling & Triathlon at 575 Pacific Street in Stamford is hosting a sale to celebrate 5 years in business with sales Friday-Sunday. Plus, if you stop by Saturday, they’ll have refreshments and BBQ!

4/15 There will be an Art Reception with local artist Stan Pastore from 6:30-8:30 at Upper Crust Bakery & Cafe in Darien. Wine and light refreshments will be served. If you can’t make it, that’s okay because Stan’s art will be display from 4/12-6/12.

4/15 Westbrook Lobster in Clinton is hosting a Thimble Island Beer Pairing Dinner starting at 6:30.

4/16 Single? Ready to mingle? Come by J House in Greenwich for a special event with Match with a free drink, a DJ, and dancing for $25. 

4/18 Buzz on over to the Red Bee Honey Cottage in Weston at 2 pm for the annual Hiving of the Honeybees. You’ll learn all about beekeeping and there will be a honey tasting afterwards. 

Props

WTF?! Wakeman Town Farm was successful in getting a $667,000 appropriation, according to Westportnow.com, for them to use in building a new classroom and fixing up their farmhouse. This is great news for the community and for children in the state so that they can learn about the environment and the importance of farming.

Food Challenge

Winner winner! Geoff Esper defeated the Bearwich at Bear’s Smokehouse BBQ in just 30 minutes and 15 seconds. Not only is he the first person to win this food challenge, but he also won $500. Now the next person to win must beat Geoff’s amazing time! 

We also learned about another food challenge that goes down at Mecha Noodle Bar in Fairfield. The Kaedama Challenge consists of eating as many bowls of noodle as possible while keeping the same broth. When you’re done with the noodles in the first bowl, you say Kaedama, then they’ll give you more noodles. Right now the record is 11 bowls in a mere 18 minutes. If you win, you’ll get some nice swag like a free t-shirt, your picture taken, and a free meal. The next winner will have to down 12 bowls of noodle, though!

Beer

Paste Magazine put together a blind tasting of 116 different IPAs across the country and local Captain Lawrence Brewing Co in Elmsford, NY made the #12 spot!

Relic Brewing made a batch of a new brew at 4 Quarters Brewing in VT. It is a tripel that has heirloom danko rye, local honey, and some Chai tea. Look for this brew in CT and also at the American Craft Beer Fest that we recently talked about.

Plenty of food over the next few days at Firefly Hollow Brewing in Bristol! Friday there will be Spud Stud and Saturday you can devour Ted’s Steamed Cheeseburgers.

There are only 100 Mug Club Memberships available for the soon to open Veracious Brewing Company. To get your spot, you need to visit Maltose Express.

Steady Habit Brewing got their official brewery permit! Congratulations!

Little Pub Wilton has Founders KBS, but they’re gonna make you wait until their Fall Stout Fest in November to tap into it!
