CT Food News: Pumpkin Goodness, Pez, Garlic Festival, Dishes to Try, CT Beer + More – 10/1/15

Well, hello there October, you sexy beast! How you doing? You’ve only just started today, but we like what you’re throwing down. Thanks for bringing us all these sexy foods, events, and news items. Reeeeooowwww. But, if we could just ask one thing: we don’t need a hurricane, so please just fizzle out. Thanks.

Now-? Jones Family Farm in Shelton has started selling their pumpkins and fall harvest bounty! For details and for where to get some good cider and donuts afterwards, check out our post.

10/4 The 15th Annual Ambler Farm Day is this coming weekend and you mos def wanna be there. For $20 a family, you’ll get a hay maze, crafts and games, apple slingshots, pumpkin chuckers, live music, a garden market, food, drinks, and more! 

10/10 The 10th Annual Lighted Boat Party floats through Stamford Harbor, starting at 6 pm. Find a spot on the west branch of the harbor and afterwards check out live music as well as drink specials at Crab Shell and World of Beer. Plus, you can also stop by Sign of the Whale for their Harpoon Octoberfest!  

10/10-11 Maybe not super sexy (especially if you’re a vampire), but damn delicious is the Connecticut Garlic & Harvest Festival at the Bethlehem Fairgrounds in Bethlehem. There will be over 200 vendors that are showing off garlic in all its beautiful forms, cooking demos, info on how to grow your own, live music, and even a garlic food court.  Admission is $8 for adults or $1 for children under 12.

10/12 Stop by Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk from 11-3 for PEZ FUN! Not only will get you free PEZ samples, but there will be chances to win PEZ prize packs, and even get a photo opp that gets your head on top of a PEZ Dispenser. C’mon, who hasn’t wanted to be on the top of one of those?

10/18 The Earthplace Festival that we talked about last week has been postponed. The hours are still 10-5, though. 

Kim Kardashian was on the Ellen Show yesterday and took a selfie for the Wholesome Wave (led by local Michel Nischan) campaign. Just take a selfie with yourself holding fresh veggies and use the tag #drinkgooddogood and Wholesome Wave will donate 10 pounds of produce to those in need. C’mon, all the cool kids are doing it. 

Welcome in fall by getting your ass to Donut Crazy in Shelton. Of course you’ll want to order a ton of donuts, but try a new one: The Great Pumpkin. It features a pumpkin buttercream filling that’s topped with pumpkin glaze and sprinkled with pie crust. And, if you need a bit of a pick-me-up, order The Great Pumpkin Latte to go with that.

The Crafty Monk in Black Rock has a special that we’re excited to try: Chef Vinny’s Soon to be Famous Pork Chop. That’s an 8 oz. chop with Granny Smith & Cinnamon reduction with sautéed spinach and mashed potato on the side. Doesn’t get more fall than that, folks. And, While you’re there on Sundays, they’ll have the game on with deals like $10 pitchers of Yuengling, $3 select craft beer, $5 apps if you’re wearing your team’s jersey, and other deals.

Greenwichtime.com reports that Mackenzie’s will reopen as Old Greenwich Social Club. Get your drink on!

Elm City Social in New Haven’s got some killer Happy Hour Deals M-F from 4-6:30. $3 apps, $5 craft beer, $5 wines, and $7 specialty cocktails including Rubber Ducky, Elm city Rum Punch, and Miami Vice #2.


10/8 Don’t forget about the Founders Flight Night at Coalhouse Pizza. Gerard and co. will have a little beer called KBS, have you heard of it? And, yeah, there will also be the CBS (Canadian Breakfast Stout), but who really knows about that beer and who actually searches for this? LOL People, it’s gonna be SICK! Plus, there will be plenty of others like Backwoods Bastard, Breakfast Stout, Harvest Ale, and more.

10/10 Bark & Brew 2015 is going down from 6-9 at Hooker Brewery. For $30 in advance or $35 at the door, you’ll eat Dog Star BBQ, as many beer samples as you’d like, free puppy kisses, and the chance at a raffle and a silent auction. Get your tix here.

The Brewers Association reports that the US has over 4,000 breweries, coming close to the record of 4,131 in 1873. Um, wow . . . that’s a lot of beer.

New England Brewing might be closed while they expand the brew room, but don’t get too scared. They’ll reopen the tasting room soon and will have beer, too . . . thanks to Two Roads who is letting them brew in Stratford. During this in-between time, they expect beer production to double, so that means you can expect to have plenty o’ more beer from them.

Thimble Island in Branford has released their seasonal Dark Pumpkin Porter once again. Get it at the brewery and find it at your local packies, too.

Thomas Hooker Brewery worked with Pioneer Hops (CT) on a special beer using fresh Cascade hops. The result will be a wet-hopped brew that will undoubtedly be dank and delicious. Shebeen in Wolcott also worked with Pioneer Hops in making their on wet-hopped beer, too. 

Beer'd Brewing Co. LogoCongrats to Aaren and Precious of Beer’d Brewing who are tying the knot on Friday. That being said, Beer’d will be closed on Friday . . . but they’ll be open on Saturday, so stop by from 1-5 for some of their killer liquid goodness.
