25 Oct

Congratulations to Steve Draper, check your e-mail for info on claiming those two tix!

Cancel any plans that you have for next Thursday, because the Chili Cook Off & Wing Fling takes all precedence over anything. Don’t believe us? They have wings and chili from local restaurants, and they have beer and liquor tastings to warm ya up even more (more details below)! Tickets are just $35, but increase to $40 on Thursday, so grab ’em today! The night goes from 6-9 at The Waterview at 215 Roosevelt Drive in Monroe, so there’s plenty of time to drink and eat up.

Want a shot at a free pair of tix, though? Just tell us what you think makes the best chili! Comment here or on our matching Facebook post for your shot to win! The contest goes from now until Tuesday at 5 pm. At that time, we will pick a random winner and will announce on this post and social media.

Now, onto more details from for this event:

Black Hog Brewing in Oxford, CTBlack Hog, Two Roads, Overshores, Veracious, and Thimble Island will all be on hand pouring out samples of their brews, so come thirsty. Wild Moon Liqueurs and Hartford Flavor Company will also be on hand with some spirited tastings, too. There will be live music from Goldrush who plays Americana, Bluegrass, and roots . . . and lots of different games to play along with some prizes along the way if you play your cards right.

Plus, yes: wings and chili! Some of the competitors going for Best Chili 2015 are Foundry Kitchen & Tavern, Vazzy’s Osteria, Tavern, and Sal e Pepe Contemporary Italian Bistro, while Butcher’s Best Market, Time Out Taverne, The Meeting House Pub, and Tavern 1757 are among some of the restaurants that are going for best wings. But, look, as much as you’re drinking and eating, you also have some responsibility for this event. You need to vote for the best wings and best chili, so make sure to keep some king of sense about you this night. ;)

The right combination of Heat and Flavor. Can’t stand when people try to make the hottest chili in the world. Totally ruins it and it isn’t very creative. On the flipside some heat is important. It is chili after all. Good amount of meat. Beer in the chili is always great. A nice big bread bowl and some pepperjack cheese melted on top. Throw in a good football game on the tube and some a good IPA and that’s a perfect day!

sweet heat. lots of chorizo, lots of chipotle. A nice brown ale to deglaze the chorizo pan. …good idea to char the onions on grill first too.
and don’t spare the bacon. Make it a day or two ahead of time so all the components comingle for awhile.

Balanced flavors. Heat is great, but not when the only thing I can taste is pain. Also: Cornbread.

Ratio, Ratio, Ratio! Needs to have good balance of meat, beans and veggies.

Some folks go for all out heat… I prefer a chili with a little sweet. Either jam or chocolate to even out some of the spice.

Also, cook with at least one bottle of beer.
