CT Food News: Scotch, Tastings, Brunch, CT Beer Week + More – 11/19/15

11/19 Check out The Blind Rhino in SoNo tonight for some awesome cocktails using Sons of Liberty liquor. Behind the bar that night will be Carl Summa, Jeff Marron, and some others who are ready to make the cocktail of your dreams. Also, there will be Thai Peanut Wings. Boom. 

11/20 Get a Taste of West Haven from 6:30-9:30 at the Savin Rock Conference Center @ 6 Rock Street. Tickets are $40 in advance and include food, wine, and beer from some of West Haven’s best restaurants. To get your ticket, head to Ye Old Liquor Shoppe, the West Haven Chamber of Commerce, or e-mail Cheryl Milano.

11/21-25 Chief Brody’s Banh Mi Truck will be hitting up the Yale/Harvard football game on 11/21 (location TBD), will be in downtown New Haven on 11/24 for lunch (location TBD), and at Two Roads on 11/25 from 4-8.

11/21 If you’re looking for some fresh goodies, check out the Winter Farmers Market of Southport from 10-1 at 279 Kings Drive.

11/22 There are plenty of great spots to eat during and after the Stamford UBS Parade Spectacular, but one of our faves is Eos. If you stop by and dress like a turkey they’ll give you a $5 drink special . . . okay, well, you don’t have to dress like a turkey to get the deal, but that would be friggin awesome.

11/22 The Heavy Pets are playing BRYAC in Black Rock starting at 7 pm. No fee, no cover, just good times. ;)

11/24 Artisan Restaurant in Southport is hosting a Johnnie Walker Trunk Show Experience from 7-10. Get your own tastes of Johnnie Walker Red, Black, double Black, Gold, Platinum, and even Blue. There will also be a cocktail using Johnnie Red for you to sip on to start the night off. And, yes, there will be plenty of food provided throughout the night as you get Scotch-ized. Tickets are $100 all in including food, drinks, and tip. Get ’em by calling them at (203) 307-4222. 

11/26 Stop by Chip’s in Fairfield for a special Pancake Breakfast from 6-11. You’ll get buttermilk pancakes, 2 eggs, sausage or bacon, and coffee or tea for just $12. The money raised for this event will be donated to Operation Hope who is fighting to end hunger and homelessness.

11/28 The Palace in Stamford is hosting Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer The Musical at both 3 and 7 pm. What a great time to bring the family into Stamford and check out this great show. While you’re there, there are plenty of great spots nearby to check out like Cilantro, Cask Republic, Coromandel, Capriccio, Volta, Bar Rosso, or Remo’s.

11/30 Fire Engine Pizza Company in Black Rock is hosting Monday Matters Fundraiser. Just stop by, stuff your face with their great pies, drink up, and you’ll be helping  University of Bridgeport Alternative Spring Break students to afford a community service trip to Haiti. The fundraiser goes from open to close, so come by for lunch, dinner, and after-dinner.

Chef Renato Donzelli of Basso Cafe in Norwalk has opened a brand new addition to his restaurant: Bar Basso. Yes, you’ll be able to stop by for a great selection of beer, wine, and cocktails on top of his already killer menu. If you’d like to still bring your own wine, there is a corkage fee of $25. 

Forever Sweet Bakery in Norwalk (you HAVE been there, right?) is hosting a hat, glove, and scarf drive at their shop. Make sure to stop by and drop off your donations. Then, while you’re there, eat the hell out of their awesome cupcakes!

If you’re hunting for a brunch spot in New Haven, you’ve got a new choice: Barcelona. They will now be open  for brunch every single Sunday.

Oh, and speaking of brunch, Back 40 Kitchen in Greenwich is now hosting Saturday brunch from 11-3. After having loved our dinner so much, we’re excited about these new possibilities! 

Food to Nom Away On

Hoodoo Brown BBQ in Ridgefield fired up their test kitchen again and this time they’ve created something more amazing than before: a brisket sandwich topped with hand breaded onion rings, cheddar cheese, and bbq sauce.

We know that half of Stamford is drinking there anyway, so why not let you know that there are some food specials November at Tigin? One of those dishes? Their Nashville Hot Fried Chicken served with house pickles and bread.


THC (The Hops Company) beer garden in Derby recently opened and it’s been one of the most popular posts on our blog. Well, it’s about to be even more popular as we share this info: Wednesday-Friday from 4-6 they have the THC 420 Hoppy Hour. That includes $5 house-tapped cocktails, $3.50 glasses of wine, and $1 off all beer. And, in terms of food you can get $5 Zuppardi pies or Ricky’s pork sliders or rib tip sliders for just $4.

Ready to meet the Green Fairy? Yeah you are! Meet her at The 9th Note Jazz Supper Club in Stamford every Wednesday and get $2 off absinthe.

Vespa in Westport is serving up Happy Hour from 5-7, Tuesday-Friday, and that includes half-price beer, wine, cocktails, and apps from the dinner menu. If wine is your thang, come by for Wine Wednesday where bottles are half priced.

Save $10 off of a painting class held right at The Fez in Stamford on 12/2 from 7-9. Just enter code fez10 and you’ll get $10 off the price which will magically turn to $35. 11/19 Sitting Duck Tavern in Stratford is hosting a Troegs Tap Takeover starting at 6 pm. They’ll be tapping their Troegenator, Mad Elf, Java Head, Blizzard of Hops, and their Perpetual IPA. Have some brews and even met the killer Troegs reps.

11/19 DuVig Brewing in Branford lets you go back stage from 6-9 for CT Beer Week.  

11/19 A little bit far away, but worth the trip is DeCicco’s of Armonk who will be hosting Brooklyn Brewery’s Garret Oliver starting at 5 pm. Not only will he be talking brews, but he’ll also be doing cooking demos and will have food for sale. And, yes, as you’d expect there’s a Brooklyn tap takeover going down! 

11/19 Plan B Stamford is hosting a Blue Point Tap Attack from 6-9 that includes their Winter, Oyster Stout, Rastafar Rye, Hoptical Illusion, Wet Hops Pale Ale, and one more they are making you wait for.

11/19 Allagash is taking over the taps tonight at Local in SoNo. Stop by for a drink, get a buck off an Allagash, then keep the pint glass. Boom.

11/19 It’s Yoga on Tap at Thimble Islands in Branford! For $17, you will get an hour long session with Rebecca Santillo and your choice of pints afterwards.


11/20 Back East Brewing is releasing their Oak Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Stout from 4-7. They are $14.99 each and are very limited, so first come, first serve.

11/20 Captain Lawrence Brewery in Elmsford is opening up their indoor beer garden as the cold air hits. Come by for some beer and also make sure to check out their experimental brews. And, if you get hungry, feed the need with some great food that they offer for purchase. 

11/23 Starting at 4, check out Mikro in Hamden for their Goose Island Bourbon County Release Party. They will have the Bourbon County Brand Stout, Barleywine, and their 2014 Muddy Imperial Stout.

11/27 From 3-8, stop by DuVig to get your own bottles of Scotch 60, a 3.8% ABV Scotch Ale. 

Pioneer Beer Company has just canned up their American IPA that will soon hit your local packie so be on the lookout!
