Like many locals, Maureen Shankar and Chef Lauren Peden (chef/owner of Simply Delicious catering) went to the New Canaan Farmers Market last weekend.  But what was different about their trip was the fresh ingredients they were shopping for weren’t for them…they were for their new farm-to-chef-to-door service called Fresh Dine.

Thanksgiving is all about spending time with your family and being thankful for what you have, but let’s be honest…sometimes you spend so much time in the kitchen that you’re not so thankful anymore.  Yes, it’s rewarding to get some amazing food out onto the table, but you might have missed that moment when your brother fell flat on his face, that juicy gossip about your cousin, or the last of those appetizers devoured by your dad that you just slaved over.  So, for you or the family that needs a break, we present to you a few choices if you’d like Thanksgiving prepared just for you.

Here is a good variety of pick up options and delivery options throughout Fairfield County.  In no particular order we have Cafe Turnier of Norwalk, Graze of Fairfield County, Bistro 7 of Wilton, Valencia of Norwalk, Fresh Dine of Darien and New Canaan, Fairway Stamford, Stew’s in Danbury, Newington, and Norwalk, Eclectic Luncheonotte of New Canaan, and City Limits Diner of Stamford.  If you have any to add, please let us know and we can add.

22 Oct

We’re big fans of restaurants that don’t fit into a mold and aren’t your typical spot.  Enter in Eclectic Luncheonette of New Canaan.  Opened for just a week, Eclectic is owned by Robert Milano, who is also the chef.  He got his start in cooking 10 years ago when he was a short order cook for a swim club and worked his way up to sous chef at the Royal Green Restaurant in Stamford.  He even earned a degree from The International Culinary Center so he could focus on his dream:  owning his own restaurant.

And now the dream has come true.  Eclectic is open with 22 seats, serving lunch at the restaurant and is also bringing great quality take-out.  Stop by for your mid-day snack from 11:30 am to 6 pm and check out their signature salads, make your own salad, sandwiches, soups, melts, and soufflés.  Here are some of the standouts that we noticed on the menu that we’re excited to try:

ChowdaQuest 2014: Tons of Restaurants Compete for Coveted Spots at ChowdaFest

18 Oct

2901804

We’ve covered ChowdaFest for the past few years and we’ve been happy to see it grow into one of the most popular events in Connecticut.  Really, what’s better?  You pay just a small amount of money to go around and taste chowder after chowder, soup after soup, then vote on your favorites.  And, at the end of the day, you feel good knowing that you’ve helped Connecticut Food Bank.  Now, the next ChowdaFest isn’t until February 2, 2014, but there’s lots going on before then…namely the brand new experience called ChowdaQuest.

Which of these soups from Ginger Man will you like the most?

Which of these soups from Ginger Man will you like the most?

ChowdaQuest is “The Quest for the Fest” and will put even more power in the hands of hungry chowda-sippers.  This all new experience came about due to so many restaurants wanting to be involved, but only having a limited amount of spots in the competition.  All you need to do is check out any of the restaurants that we’ve listed below, ask for their soup sampler, then vote for your favorite soup by heading to ChowdaQuest.com.  You get one vote per restaurant per valid e-mail address, so make sure you’re voting for your absolute favorite soup from each restaurant.  The restaurants with the most votes by Thanksgiving will get spots in ChowdaFest 2014, so make sure that you support your favorite restaurants by voting!  While you’re on the voting page, make sure to enter the Sierra Nevada contest.  Just explain where your favorite place to drink Sierra Nevada is and you just might win dinner for two at any of the restaurants that are participating in ChowdaQuest 2014.

Here is the massive list of restaurants that are participating in ChowdaQuest 2014.  Some of the restaurants are still waiting to confirm with Jim (nothing next to their name), but will be ready to go shortly:

Guide to Fall Beer Bashes and Oktoberfests in Fairfield County, CT

6 Sep

People love to drink beer all year round, but once fall comes along something clicks in people’s heads.  We’ll call it the Oktoberfest switch.  It’s the time of year when we think about how we want to be outside, drinking some brews, hanging with friends, and enjoying the crisp cool air.  And while we can’t come close to the madness that is a true German Oktoberfest, we can at least try by celebrating beer with parties and festivals.  You could, of course, go to every single event that we’ve listed, but we won’t be paying for your hospital bills…

Stand Up 2 Cancer Just by Dining Out!

12 Aug

Mastercard is standing up to cancer again this year with their Stand Up To Cancer campaign.  All you need to do is buy at least a $10 meal at any restaurant with your Mastercard.  With every purchase they will donate a penny to Stand Up To Cancer or 2 cents if you make a PayPal transaction at the restaurant, up to $4,000,000.  While a penny might not seem like a lot, that money will add up very quickly.  Already, since July 12, $1,280,280 has been raised!  The Stand Up To Cancer Mastercard campaign goes until September 28, 2013, so get out there and get eating!  Normally, we’d create a list of our favorite spots for you to check out, but you see that all the time with our posts and our annual OmNomy Awards.  So, we thought we’d ask you all, our fellow OmNomivores:

What’s your favorite spot in Fairfield County?  Let us know down below by commenting or by talking with us on Twitter or Facebook.  We’ll update the list down below.   Let’s all take a stand against cancer!

Celebrate IPA Day with CT Brews and Vote for CT’s Best IPA!

1 Aug

Awesome IPADay banner from The Drink Nation

August 1.  It’s a day each year when we pause to remember the brilliant men who loaded hops into beer to preserve it on a long voyage on ships to India.  We salute you, o’ brave and tenacious travelers.  And, we thank you!  Your invention far surpasses the usefulness of things such as wheels, pulleys, levels, and even filtered water.

Yes, it’s on this day when we profess our love of IPAs!  Say it loud, say it proud:  I drink India Pale Ales!  And, to help you fuel up this day, we’re providing you with a list of IPAs made locally that you should try.  Also, please vote below by Thursday (8/8) for your favorite CT IPA.  We’ll announce a first, second, third, and OmNomCT choice winner next Friday, 8/9.

Dishcrawl Fairfield County Expands + Launches New Canaan Events

16 May

When we hit up the first Dishcrawl Greenwich experience, we were excited to meet some great people and try some new food.  First we tried some excellent tapas at Barcelona and had Chef Michael Lucente talk to us about what was on the plate, then we got a huge surprise with the Haitian food of Maddy’s Food Truck.  From there we checked out Sundown Saloon for some tacos and chicken wing bites, then ended up at Meli-Melo with a nice scoop of ice cream.  Throughout the night we met some great people that we had only known online and it left us wanting to spend more time with them all.  While some people thought that the choice to go to Sundown Saloon wasn’t the best and didn’t fit the bill, Jesse (Greenwich Dishcrawl Ambassador) took it as an opportunity to learn and help make Dishcrawl better.  He’s definitely listening and trying to make each Dishcrawl even better than the last.  Case in point will be the Surprise Dishcrawl that he has planned with only 8 tix left…we think he’s got something great up his sleeves.

Now, there are a few things to go through here with you:

Dishcrawl Greenwich and Dishcrawl Stamford merged to form Dishcrawl Fairfield County.  This makes much more sense, especially because they are looking to expand into more cities such as Norwalk, Darien, and now–officially–New Canaan.  Yes, the experience of checking out four restaurants in a night (only the first restaurant is revealed, keeping the rest a mystery), meeting great people, talking with chefs and owners, and enjoying nomworthy food is coming to New Canaan.  Jesse was able to partner with the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce and Taste of the Town Stroll to create a two night event on August 27 and 28, both at 7 pm.

If you’d like to get your tickets, just click here.

If you’d like to learn more about the Dishcrawl concept, check out our first post about Dishcrawl Greenwich.

Again, if you are vegetarian, please note that when you buy your tickets as Jesse can accommodate you.  If you have other restrictions, you can always see if Jesse can help to arrange suitable food for you.  Just contact him at jessel@dishcrawl.com.  Also make sure to follow Dishcrawl on Twitter with their new handle, @DishcrawlFCT.

Where in New Canaan would you love for Dishcrawl to go?  We say elm because we’ve been dying to go there for a long, long time.  :)

Station Eats Gives Back w/ Their Dog of the Month

6 May

Hot Dog of the Month Taco Dog Station Eats Stamford

Cinco de Mayo doesn’t have to end, especially not at Station Eats.  Starting today until the middle of June, they’ll be featuring their Taco Dog as the Dog of the Month.  Pick your dog (grass fed beef, chicken, or veggie), then they’ll add on tomato salsa, lettuce, shredded cheddar, sour cream, and wrap it up in a warm flour tortilla.  If that’s not spicy enough for ya, just remember that the good guys at Station Eats will be donating 10% of their profits for Taco Dogs to two great causes:  Camp Promise East (giving summer camp experiences to people with muscular dystrophy and ALSTDI (fighting to find a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease).  You can get the Taco Dog at either the New Canaan or Stamford locations, btw.

If you’d like a burger and shake to complement that doggie, then check out these specials starting today:  The Steak House Burger and their Coconut Shake.  The Steak House Burger (we’d had it before, it’s excellent) has cheese, Station Steak Sauce, shaved onions, and tomato.  So, make sure to come by a few times and get your Taco Dog!  Also, why not invite your friends, have family reunions at Station Eats, have your next birthday party, too!  A Taco Dog for everybody!
