Community Plates Looking for Food Runners; One Night Only Fundraiser at The Spread

15 Mar

Community Plates, a non-profit run by volunteers, is looking for more food runners to help them accomplish their food rescue mission. And, with more places than ever that are sharing their food for pickup, it’s more vital than ever to join the able corp of food runners. There are over 300 food runners in Fairfield County alone, but they are hoping to add at least 50 by the end of this month. With your help you can boost these numbers even more: 8 million meals saved, equal to 12 million pounds! New members who are doing their runs can post a pic using #bgooddoesgood and b.good will give you a free meal in return.  Continue reading

Pho Pun-Free Review of Mecha Noodle Bar in SoNo

10 Feb

We’re going to resist the temptation to make pho puns for this entire review. Why? Because our meal was so fucking good (not PHOking good) that puns just wouldn’t do it justice. Ok, so let’s see if we can do this . . .

Wayyyy back in 2013 when we wrote about Mecha Noodle Bar opening up in Fairfield, we were excited to see Fairfield County’s first devoted ramen bar boiling over with praise and popularity. And, when we shared that they’d be opening up closer to us, in SoNo (where Pasta Nostra used to be), we nearly cried with joy. Continue reading

Chef Carlos Baez of The Spread Vows to Beat Bobby Flay on Food Network

4 Feb

If you’ve ever had the chance to meet Chef Carlos Baez (pictured top left) of The Spread, the first kind of words that might spring up at you are kind, smiling, generous, reserved and creative . . . but how about dogged, uber-concentrated, and competitive? Well, we had a chance to see his tougher and rougher side when he recently competed against other chefs in the CT Chefs Challenge event. He was laser-focused on his sous chefs and dish that wowed the judges. Baez has also had lots of other success with food contests like Chowdafest. Continue reading

Over the past few years, he’s spent countless nights stoking the pit, finding the right cooking times and temps, and working on his technique. And, now, it’s finally paying off big time with a BBQ pop-up at Sandwedge Deli @ 607 Main Avenue in Norwalk. Continue reading

A reliable favorite, now with cocktails. Our review of Basso Cafe in Norwalk

26 Jan

Since we first went to Basso Cafe back in September ’12, we’ve told everyone we meet to check it out. And, every time we’ve asked how it went, we’ve heard great things back. That’s just the kind of place Chef Renato Donzelli runs.

But, we were starting to feel like posers, recommending the place to everyone, even though we haven’t been back since. We know, bad food bloggers! So, when Basso Cafe went from a BYOB only establishment, to a full-on bar, we figured that was the perfect time to get back there and try their creative cocktails with some friends. Oh, and eat, because, you know, it’s always good to eat when downing large quantities of liquor. Continue reading

A peek inside the vault at Cask Republic SoNo (Review)

6 Jan

The news came as a shock to many people when Ginger Man SoNo  announced it was closing its doors. But quickly after the shock came relief when the owner, Christian Burns, shared the reason why: they wanted to refresh the darker and more compartmentalized Ginger Man into something brighter and more open. And with that change they wanted to bring a fresh, new menu, and a name change to go along with it. The new name was one we were all familiar with: Cask Republic, which is the same Cask many have come to know and love in Stamford and New Haven. Continue reading
