Do you know what the great thing about chili is? It’s perfect any ‘ol time of year! By itself, on top of a burger, on top of a hot dog, on a breakfast sandwich: it’s a meal and it’s a condiment at the same exact time. And, what better way to show some respect and reverence to chili then hold a contest called The Charity Chili Challenge? Now approaching its second year in existence, this contest sponsored by the Exchange Clubs of North Stamford, Stamford, and Norwalk pits amateurs and professional cooks against each other.
The back room at Bailey’s Backyard also opens up to the outside for warmer weather…

If you’re anything like us, you’re probably fed-the-heck-up with this winter. Scraping your car windows, plowing the driveway, wiping out on icy walkways, spine-tingling cold, traffic jams . . . ugh, it all just sucks. Okay, well, not all of it. See, while we’ve been freezing our butts off, the beautiful maple trees at Stamford Museum and Nature Center were hard at work producing the sweet, sweet goodness we all love to pour on our pancakes on snowy Sunday mornings. Yep, we’re talking about the nectar of the gods better known as maple syrup, and you can celebrate it in all it’s glory at their Maple Sugar Festival Weekend on March 7 and March 8 at Stamford Museum & Nature Center. The activities go on from 11AM – 3PM both days, and with tickets costing just $5 for members or $10 for non-members, there’s plenty to get your money’s worth:
When we went to Barcelona a few years ago, we checked out La Boqueria. It was an amazing experience with fresh food, veggies, and fruits that seemingly went on for miles aisle after aisle. And, mixed in around the mercado were restaurants that specialized in foods like pizza, empanadas, coffee, fresh squeezed jugos, seafood, and more. Well, Barcelona is a bit far to travel for that kind of experience, but checking out Mercado on March 1 isn’t so tough. Continue reading →
Hot Wings are an American gift, an American duty, dare we even say an American right? Yes, those hot and spicy little bites of heaven are on nearly every restaurant menu and seem to be the perfect accompaniment to a nice pint or six of beer. Whether you like the wingette, the drumette, like them with celery, with carrot, with ranch, whether you do that trick where you smoosh down the meat until it pops off the bone, it’s clear we all have our own ways to devour our Hot Wings. However you eat those wings, you’ll definitely want to head out to Danbury on January 24th for the first annual Wing Fest! The event, $15 per person, is being held at the Matrix Conference Center (39 Old Ridgebury Rd) from 5-9 and will feature some of the area’s best wings. Once you enter, you’ll get 12 free wing vouchers with each additional voucher costing $2 each. When you’ve picked your favorite, just drop your Connecticut’s Best Wing token into your favorite restaurant’s bucket. There will also be a panel of judges who are doing blind tastings so that they can find their favorite of the bunch, too. Oh, and bring some extra cash for beer too, because they’ll be serving up 12 oz. pours of Half Full Bright Ale and Toasted Amber. One last thing: from 6-8, Super Bowl Champ New York Giant Jeff Feagles will be on hand signing free autographs.
As of now, here are the participants (with 1-2 to be added):
After you’ve done your duty as an American and have voted, just stop on by toForever Sweet Bakeryat 4 New Canaan Avenue in Norwalk. That’s right…what started as a local chowder competition to help raise much needed money for local food banks has grown immensely. So immensely, in fact, that organizer (and Chief Chowderhead) Jim Keenan had to put some serious thought into expansion. Would he keep Chowdafest at the same level…or take it to the next level? If you’ve met Jim before you know he’s never content with keeping things at the same level; he always wants to kick it up a few hundred notches. And that’s exactly what he’s doing this year with Chowdafest 2014 (Part II) on Sunday, October 12 from 12-4 pm at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk! An obvious added benefit will be a more spread out festival to help combat the large crowds that people faced last Souper Bowl Sunday.
So…remember when we wrote about the Meriden Food Truck Festival going down October 25 +26 just a few hours ago? Yeah…well, we’ve got another one to share with ya, this happening much sooner (9/18 from 4-8) at the Shelton River Walk: Food Trucks in the Valley! This feast by the river is being hosted by The Lower Naugatuck Valley Parent Child Resource Center and will help to raise vital funding for them that will go towards programs and services such as helping people who have undergone severe trauma, abuse, or neglect.
