Get you some: Taste of Port Chester and Wilton Are Back for more in 2014

4 Jun

We love tasting events where you get to taste some of the best spots in an area.  They tend to be inexpensive, they have lots of variety, and it’s basically like a Costco tasting spree on steroids.  ‘Nuff said, right?  So, get ready for two great events coming up:  Taste of Port Chester on 6/8 and Taste of Wilton on 6/9.  Check out the deets with us and get yo’self down (or up) there for all the nomworthy food.

Taste of Port Chester

6/8, from 12-3 pm

Registration starts at 11:30 at the Marina on Abendroth Ave.

Tickets are $25 (drinks extra; you’ll get a map for easy food tourism)

Taste of Port Chester is a walking tour (though there are busses available) through CT’s neighboring village.  Once you have your wristband, you can just visit any of the places below (there will be balloons outside) and get samples of their goodies.  We were downtown when this was going on last year and it was a very popular event, so you won’t want to miss this one.  Added bonuses:  your ticket purchase helps to support Port Chester Public Schools and you can walk off all of the calories that you ingest (wishful thinking).

Epicly Awesome: Greenwich Wine + Food Festival 2013

28 Aug

Screen Shot 2013-08-28 at 11.18.48 AM

One of the biggest highlights of the year for Fairfield County is the Greenwich Wine + Food Festival, brought to you by Serendipity Magazine.  Now in its third year, this three day event marks the beginning of fall, but also celebrates the best of food and drink in Fairfield and Westchester Counties.  Something else that makes the Greenwich Wine + Food Festival great is that proceeds from ticket sales go directly to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a charity started by Paul Newman in 1988 that gives seriously ill children a chance at a fun and soul-healing summer camp experience.

This year you can expect more food, more celebrity chefs, more wine, more beer, more drinks, and more awesomeness than ever before.  All the fun starts off on Thursday, October 3 with the Kick-off Party at Miller Motors in Greenwich.  Then, on Friday is the Grand Tasting Gala that we were fortunate enough to go to last year…it was excellent.  We met lots of chefs, sampled some amazing food, and even had some wine.  And, finally on Saturday there is the heart of the Greenwich Wine and Food Festival:  culinary village, chef demo tents, lots of food and drinks, meets and greets with celebrity chefs, and a monumental burger contest hosted by Joe Bastianich and judged by an all-star panel.

Here’s a breakdown of each day with prices and info.  Hope to see you there fellow winos, beerocrats, cocktailers, and foodicianados!

Stamford Summer Restaurant Weeks Goes Local w/ Farm Fare

7 Aug

Hand it to Stamford Tables and the local restaurant community to change up their popular restaurant weeks.  It’s not that they’re not working, it’s that they want to constantly make them better every single time.  Some of the great additions have been turning the experience into weeks (not just a week), Stamford Hospital’s Kids Fans’ 5-2-1-0 program that gives healthy food options for kids at participating restaurants.  We all try to be one of the first 3,000 restaurant week nom-ers because we know that we get a voucher for a small popcorn from the Avon with any movie ticket purchase.  And this year, from August 19 – September 2, a bunch of the restaurants are going local with their menu, highlighting produce from local farms.  We’re talking about Hubbard Heights Farm, Stamford Museum & Nature Center, Domus, and the Green Up Group!  Restaurants participating in the local farm food program are noted below with an  and those participating in the 5-2-1-0 program (kids 12 and under are $6.95 or $9.95 for a healthy lunch) have an *.

Hold Your Table and Get Some Cash Back with OpenTable

27 Mar

One of the first things we do when we’re looking for a restaurant to hit up is check to see if it’s on OpenTable.  In just a few clicks you can see lots of restaurants in your area that are taking reservations.  From there, you can click on a restaurant, enter in your party size and time, then you’re on your way to booking your table.  You could even play restaurant roulette and enter a party size, date, and time and see which restaurants in the area have tables nearby.

Dino Poutine is killer, unique to Dinosaur Stamford

Dino Poutine is killer, unique to Dinosaur Stamford

Recently, we used OpenTable to get ourselves some nice seats at Bar Sugo in Norwalk and Dinosaur Bar-b-que in Stamford.  Plus, we can’t tell you how easy this site makes vacation planning.  And, wouldn’t you know it, Dan’s Prius has OpenTable built into it?

When you show up for the reservation, make sure you give your name and they check you in before you find your seat.  At most restaurants you’ll earn 100 points for each time you show up and dine out.  There are even some restaurants on the site that will earn you 1,000 points for honoring your reservation.  When you reach 2,000 points you’ll be sent a $20 gift certificate usable at any OpenTable restaurant.

Here are just some of the OpenTable restaurants that you could hit up in just Connecticut:

Meat Eating Contest for The Stamford Fire Safety Foundation Fund at Rodizio Grill, Stamford

6 Mar
Stamford Fire Safety Foundation
•••
Update:  The “Last Man Standing” food eating contest is rescheduled for May 9.
Start stretching your stomach because May 9 this Thursday (3/7) at 7 pm there’s gonna be trouble…the gastronomical kind.  Yup, there will be a rotisserie meat eating contest.  We’re talking about Rodizio’s cuts of beef, pork, chicken, and seafood selections that normally you’d get when you flip the cue over to green.  At stake is a $100 cash prize and free Rodizio Grill meals for an entire year.
Look at the steam coming off that sirloin!

Look at the steam coming off that sirloin!

Anyone can enter for $30 per person and meat-hungry onlookers can get the Full Rodizio (all you can eat meat and salad bar) for only $30.13…normally $34.99.  If you’d like to enter and think you’ve got the guts (literally), e-mail rodiziogrillct@gmail.com by 5/9.  A generous portion of the entry fees and meals will go towards The Stamford Fire Safety Foundation Fund.  This is a great organization to support because they provide free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.  Also, they give out fire prevention materials and give support to the fire departments in Stamford through safety initiatives.

Bartaco, Moja, and Safita to Open in Westport at National Hall Complex! Yeah Variety!

8 Oct

Porkslap Ale (it’s boss) with tacos at Bartaco Stamford

Update:  Moja is now open and bartaco is having a soft opening this week, 4 pm until closing with normal hours start with lunch on 6/17 at 11:30!

Located at 20 Wilton Road in Westport (the old Peter Coppola space & next door to Save the Children), bartaco opens its doors to the public today after 4pm for a soft opening. The 4pm opening time will take place all week and we will begin lunch service next Monday, 6/17 at 11:30am.

It’s been spinning around the rumor mill for over a year, but just a few days ago there was confirmation from Vanessa Inzitari of Westport Daily Voice:  Bartaco is coming to Westport.  This will be the fourth Bartaco to hit the streets, with one in West Hartford, one in Stamford, and the other in Port Chester.  The lease is now signed, so you’ll be able to get your drinks and get stuffed on tacos at 20 Wilton Road.  Although we were critical of Bartaco in our last review, we can always give the Westport location a shot.

Moja sake, from their FB page

According to Vanessa’s article, Bartaco will open in the spring, perfect timing for the margaritas and drinks that lots of people rave about.  But, even if Bartaco isn’t your style, there will be two other choices of restaurants.  You could check out Moja:   Asian fusion with Brazilian flare.  Another great piece of news here is that it looks like they will have lots of custom and unique sakes!  According to their FB page (website is down right now), “Our mission at Moja is to deliver a healthy, fresh, unique eating experience based on asian cuisine with flavors from around the world, served in a vibrant, upbeat environment.”  We’re all on board with that.

Fantasy Footballize with Deals and Parties at Rodizio Grill in Stamford, CT

31 Aug

“Okay team, sure, we’re down by a few touchdowns, but when have we ever let that stop us?  We’re big, we’re strong…we’re from Connecticut.  Remember last week?  We came from behind and scored 3 touchdowns just minutes before the clock stopped tickin’.  So, look, we’re gonna do this!  We’re gonna do this!    We’re gonna do this by pushing ahead, dashing way past the goal.  See boys, we’re in this to win it.  I want you to get out there and win this game.  Remember, you might be only one person, but we’re a team.  We’re the Connecticut Seagulls.  No one, and I mean no one, can keep the Seagulls down!”

-Coach Omnomsky, Connecticut Seagulls

After this motivational speech in the locker room, the Connecticut Seagulls went on to win a record-breaking game with a total of 8 touchdowns.  Really, it was incredible and one for the record books.  You know, thinking back to Coach Omnomsky’s famous speech made us think about football and the joy that it brings millions of people in America.
