15 Food Trucks Roll into Orange Fairgrounds for RBS Food Truck Festival

1 May

Update:  due to the threat of storms, the Food Truck Festival is postponed until May 23, 4-8 pm.  Please spread the word and tell your friends about the new date.

One of the key benefits of the weather getting nicer (theoretically, look at it outside, bleh) is that it’s food truck season.  Of course, in our minds, any season is food truck season, but we can be realistic and say that a good majority of trux go into hibernation.  Well, shake off those sleepy heads because Race Brook School has put together a monster food truck festival for May 16 23 from 4-8 PM.

Ditch your fancy restaurant plans and, instead, take a bunch of your friends over to the Orange Fairgrounds.  10% of all sales are being given directly to the Race Brook School that Alex from the newly launched The Buzz Truck (in attendance) went to!

This is seriously the best way to kick off a beautiful weekend with…

Four Recipes for the Serious Chocoholic from Parallel Post in Trumbull

25 Feb

February is the official month of chocolate, yet there’s also an American Chocolate Week that starts on March 17.  But, do we really need a month or eek to go crazy and indulge in chocolate?  Psshh, nah, any ol’ day will do, but we should embrace both of these times because then at least our lusts are justified.  :)

So, whether you just love chocolate, like it occasionally, or just want to try something new, we’ve got four great recipes to share with you from Parallel Post in Trumbull.  By following these recipes, you’ll be able to make a decadent chocolate cake, a richly complex Valrhona Milk Chocolate Panna Cotta with Salty Caramel and Malt Ice Cream Milkshake, a Chocolate Cardamom Tart, and a Chocolate Moonshine Manhattan on the Rocks.

You know it’s just about Valentine’s Day when you start to hear about the annual Chocolate, Dessert, & Wine Lover’s Evening that benefits the Shelter for the Homeless in Stamford.

Woah woah woah…you just said three of my favorite words.  All three of those together in one massively awesome event? Wait, tell me more!

Okay, sure:

First up, it all goes down on 2/6/14 from 6-9 pm at the Stamford Marriott and tickets are $50 in advance (purchase them here) or $60 after February 3.  Good news, too:  100% of the tickets sold go directly to the Shelter for the Homeless.  This annual event is always a major fundraiser and with the crazy temperatures we’ve been experiencing lately, those without a home need the help even more.

Stamford Summer Restaurant Weeks Goes Local w/ Farm Fare

7 Aug

Hand it to Stamford Tables and the local restaurant community to change up their popular restaurant weeks.  It’s not that they’re not working, it’s that they want to constantly make them better every single time.  Some of the great additions have been turning the experience into weeks (not just a week), Stamford Hospital’s Kids Fans’ 5-2-1-0 program that gives healthy food options for kids at participating restaurants.  We all try to be one of the first 3,000 restaurant week nom-ers because we know that we get a voucher for a small popcorn from the Avon with any movie ticket purchase.  And this year, from August 19 – September 2, a bunch of the restaurants are going local with their menu, highlighting produce from local farms.  We’re talking about Hubbard Heights Farm, Stamford Museum & Nature Center, Domus, and the Green Up Group!  Restaurants participating in the local farm food program are noted below with an  and those participating in the 5-2-1-0 program (kids 12 and under are $6.95 or $9.95 for a healthy lunch) have an *.

Stamford ArtWalk Map 2013…click through for a zoomed in view

There’s always something great going on in Downtown Stamford, ya know?  Whether it’s restaurant weeks, charity events, their yearly outdoor sculpture exhibitions (this year it’s “Downtown Abstractions”), Santa gliding down a building, or Alive @ Five, Downtown Stamford is the place to be.  And, now we have another reason to love Stamford:  the first ever ARTWALK that’s starting Friday (6/14) and goes into Saturday, 6/15.  ARTWALK 2013 will feature 95 artists from the Northeast who are presenting their art in various styles and mediums.  This weekend event is free to the public and if you’d like a copy of this map, just register at the ARTWALK booth on Spring Street.  Time it perfectly by going to the opening celebration on 6/14 @ 5 pm, have some refreshments, and join many of the artists, gallery owners, local business owners, and restaurateurs…then pick up the map!

Most of that art that’s on display will remain up for viewing at restaurants and businesses until July 7, so even if you can’t make this event, you’ll have another chance for viewing.  Plus, if you really love something, you can purchase it!  In addition, there are special events (full list here) and exhibits up for you to check out:

Taste of the Nation New Haven 2013 Vows No Kid Hungry

8 May

No Kid Hungry.  That’s the rallying call of Share Our Strength, an organization put together to wipe out childhood hunger.  And, with about 105,000 (13%) of children under 18 in Connecticut being food insecure, you can see how important this organization is.  One of their major fundraisers across the country is called Taste of the Nation that feature local food, chefs, and drinks.  And, we just so happen to be lucky enough to have a Taste of the Nation taking place at The Omni Hotel at Yale in New Haven on 5/22 from 6-9 for regular ticket holders ($85) or 5-9 for VIP ticket holders ($150).  The money will not only benefit Share Our Strength, but it will also benefit Christian Community Action, Connecticut Food Bank, End Hunger Connecticut, and the local chapter of No Kid Hungry Connecticut.  So, not only will you be helping to end childhood hunger, but you’ll also have some great music, treats, and drinks.  Here are the details:

Station Eats Gives Back w/ Their Dog of the Month

6 May

Hot Dog of the Month Taco Dog Station Eats Stamford

Cinco de Mayo doesn’t have to end, especially not at Station Eats.  Starting today until the middle of June, they’ll be featuring their Taco Dog as the Dog of the Month.  Pick your dog (grass fed beef, chicken, or veggie), then they’ll add on tomato salsa, lettuce, shredded cheddar, sour cream, and wrap it up in a warm flour tortilla.  If that’s not spicy enough for ya, just remember that the good guys at Station Eats will be donating 10% of their profits for Taco Dogs to two great causes:  Camp Promise East (giving summer camp experiences to people with muscular dystrophy and ALSTDI (fighting to find a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease).  You can get the Taco Dog at either the New Canaan or Stamford locations, btw.

If you’d like a burger and shake to complement that doggie, then check out these specials starting today:  The Steak House Burger and their Coconut Shake.  The Steak House Burger (we’d had it before, it’s excellent) has cheese, Station Steak Sauce, shaved onions, and tomato.  So, make sure to come by a few times and get your Taco Dog!  Also, why not invite your friends, have family reunions at Station Eats, have your next birthday party, too!  A Taco Dog for everybody!

Prost! Landmark Biergarten at Station Eats to open in Stamford

Rendering of the Landmark Biergarten at Station Eats Stamford

Zicke, Zacke, Zicke, Zacke, Hoi, Hoi, Hoi!

Yeah, you’ll be singing lots of songs in German pretty soon.  Odes to the Oktoberfest gods, if you will.  And, you’ll be singing your heart out from the beautiful, newly renovated patio at Station Eats in Stamford.  The patio has been reimagined and redesigned and will forever henceforth be known as the Landmark Biergarten at Station Eats.  We got in touch with one of the owners, Nick Type, and he told us more about the Biergarten, opening half way through May:

Kristien's classic burger at Station Eats, all loaded and ready to go

Kristien’s classic burger at Station Eats, all loaded and ready to go

“It will offer a line of rotating draft craft beers, wines, sparkling wines and our house made (fresh / no mixes) station margarita (14oz – $6.00). Beer prices will be very reasonable. We will have buxom gals and hunky lads serving out there and the occasional live music act. The biergarten menu will be an extension of our current menu and include items such as bier braised brats, house made bacon sauerkraut on pretzel rolls. Complimentary warm station kettle chips made to order will greet every patron.”

Stamford Restaurants Paired with Acts from Alive @ Five 2013

23 Apr

We had a brilliant moment of realization:  someone needs to pair the bands and singers from Alive @ Five with restaurants in Stamford.  Who would be awesome enough to do that?  Well, since we couldn’t find anyone who’d be game, we decided to create a list of the bands and singers then provide a restaurant that would be perfect to hit up before (or after) the concert.  We’ll also give you an explanation for added entertainment value.  Also, check down below for costs, rules, and regulations for Alive @ Five 2013.

June 20, The Wallflowers paired with Zaza Italian Gastrobar

The Wallflowers, led by singer Jakob Dylan (son of Bob Dylan), gained popularity in the late 90’s.  Their rock riffs paired with deep lyrics and Dylan’s smooth voice (as opposed to his dad’s) make for some awesome songs like “One Headlight” and “6th Avenue Heartache.”  It only makes sense, then, that you’d need to eat at Zaza, a sleek, sexy, and rockstar-ish restaurant nearby the Alive @ Five stage.

June 27, The Mavericks paired with Plan B Burger Bar

It’s tough to really to say what kind of music The Mavericks play.  Sometimes they are country, sometimes they border on ska, sometimes they even push over to rockabilly, and sometimes they even find a way to throw accordions into their songs.  What better pairing, then, with Plan B Burger Bar at the Stamford Town Center?  You’ve got bourbon, you’ve got beer, you’ve got burgers, and you’ve got lots of killer sides that all gel together for that perfect pre-show meal.
