A win win WIN at Judy’s Bar + Kitchen, Stamford (Review)

9 Oct

A while back, our friend Terri Smith, who curates Franklin Street Works in Stamford, reached out for help in creating a fun experience for their annual fundraiser event: the opportunity to review a restaurant with yours truly. We were completely on board (hey, anything for a great local charity), but wanted to pick the perfect restaurant for the experience. We immediately thought of Judy’s Bar + Kitchen, and being the good soul she is, Chef Judith Roll (also of Tabouli Grill) was totally on board! Skip ahead to the fundraiser event, and wouldn’t you know, our friends John and Lori Beth won! That’s the first and second “win” of our win, win, WIN. So, for our first (admittedly overdue) review back, we’re sharing not just our own thoughts, but also what our friends thought about this Stamford hotspot.

First of all, let’s just say how excited we were to be at Judy’s, having been major fans of Chef Roll since we lived in Stamford the first time around ’07-’13 and ordered Tabouli Grill on the regular. And while the Judy’s Bar & Kitchen concept is VERY different, with down home BBQ and comfort food and killer cocktails, we just knew we were going to be in for a treat! (That’s the third WIN, for those of you keeping track with the title.) Continue reading

Washington Prime Opening Mid-Summer in new Ironworks SoNo Building

6 Jun

SoNo’s getting a brand new restaurant and it’s called Washington Prime, Eating + Drinking Well.  It will be located in the brand new Ironworks SoNo…a similar set up like Harlan Social in the Harbor Point area of Stamford.

The People Behind Washington Prime

SoNo’s newest restaurant is a team effort with Rob Moss, Marco Siguenza, and Executive Chef Jared Falco.  Starting with Rob, he has been a manager at Match and Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar in Greenwich, and has helped to create cb5 restaurants such as Red Lulu, Lolita, Chinawhite, 30 Boltwood and OAK Longbar & Kitchen.  Marco has some excellent restaurant experience, too.  Like Rob, he has worked at Match, but he also has some other major restaurant cred for helping to open up 55 Degrees in Fairfield and Scena Wine Bar in Darien.  Although he is no longer connected with these restaurants, his cousins continue to run it and Marco starts this new endeavor.

G. Garvin hits up Mama’s Boy this Wednesday, 5/21…

G. Garvin has made it his personal mission to find a ‘lil bit of the South wherever he goes for his show Road Trip with G. Garvin…including Connecticut.  He recently stopped by three places in the Nutmeg State that ooze that Southern charm and keep the diners coming back for more.  His first stop is The Corner in Milford, which is known throughout the state for their killer breakfasts.  From there, G. Garvin hits up Mama’s Boy Southern Table & Refuge in SoNo, a new restaurant that has been winning over diners in the past year.  And, finally, he stops by Sandra’s Next Generation in New Haven to check out some authentically amazing Southern fare.

24 Apr

2014 marks the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby, the Indy 500 of the horse-racing world.  As we mentioned in our post about the special Kentucky bourbon tasting at Harry’s, the derby is really just an excuse for people to dress in huge ass hats and wear lots of Vineyard Vines and searsucker suits.  But, you can’t just get all dressed up and all fancy looking then stay at home.  Psssh, what fun would that be?  You best believe that we’ve got to help you out a bit.  So, here are three really exciting and adventurous things to do on Derby Day…hideous hat not necessarily included.

3rd Annual OmNomys: Celebrating the Best in Food in Fairfield County, 2013

18 Dec

Logo for OmNomys

Can you believe that this is the third year of the OmNomys?! For those of you new to us this year, we like to eat a little food every now and then (riiight), and keep track of the best of the best to celebrate at the end of the year. In 2011 and 2012 we were lucky enough to dine on some amazing food throughout Fairfield County, but we feel like 2013 really upped the ante with some fantastic new spots opening up!

So here it is, the 2013 OmNomys…the best food we’ve eaten in Fairfield County in the year 2013 (not necessarily ever, just in 2013)!  If you noticed one of your favorites that wasn’t on the list, it doesn’t mean it’s not awesome…it just means we may not have eaten there in 2013 or we happened to eat somewhere just a little better this year.  But hey, there’s always 2014, so tell us where we need to hit up for next year’s list!

Best Ambiance: Dolce Cubano, Stamford

Mama's Boy Holiday Promo

Don’t worry all you good boys and girls out there, Greer Frederick of Mama’s Boy Southern Table & Refuge hasn’t forgotten about you this holiday season.  She’s been watching you (she still can’t believe that you did that, though) and has deemed you worthy of some great holidays gifts.

Present One

Unwrap a cookie decorating class on December 7 from 2:30-4 pm with Pastry Chef Natalie Duplessy.  While this is geared more towards kids, we don’t see any reason why big kids couldn’t go. :)  Kids will be making sugar cookie Christmas characters and will decorate them with frosting, sprinkles, and all other kinds of goodies.  The cost per child is $10 and that includes cookies to take home and a soft drink or juice to sip on during the cookie class.
