Dan and Kristien with Chef Geoffrey Zakarian at Greenwich Wine Food Festival 2014

Hmm, when you have the chance to chat with a man as complex Chef Geoffrey Zakarian, where do you start? He fought his way to the top against a slew of other chefs to gain his spot on Iron Chef America! You see him as a judge on Chopped and he brightens your Saturday morning on The Kitchen with Sunny Anderson, Katie Lee, Jeff Mauro, and Marcela Valladolid. Chances are, too, that he’s in your kitchen . . . well, in cookbook form at least with My Perfect Pantry and Town | Country. But maybe most interesting to you, our Omnomivores, is his Greenwich roots: yes, The Avenue was his old stomping grounds and soon he’ll be stomping it more as he opens up his new restaurant, The National Greenwich. He goes into depth about that, not following restaurant trends, how he handles critiquing others, his appearances at the Greenwich Wine + Food Festival, Kathie Lee, becoming the new President of the Food Council for City Harvest, and what’s in the works next for him in our interview, so go ahead and get your reading on below . . .  Continue reading

OmNomCT talks to Kathie Lee about wine, food, CT + more!

To say that Kathie Lee Gifford Is an icon in the entertainment biz would be a crazy understatement. Along with Regis Philbin, she pioneered daytime talks shows on Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee. From there, she moved to Today where she continues to bring it every morning over a glass of wine (or two) with Hoda Kotb.

In fact, it’s that love of wine that made her branch off from more than just a groundbreaking, helluva funny TV host, to proud owner of her very own wine brand: GIFFT Wines, which is what brings her to the 2015 Greenwich Wine +Food Festival. And, lucky us got the chance to interview her all about the big event, the kick off dinner with Geoffrey Zakarian, as well as being continually harassed by Joel McHale of The Soup, the incredible success of GIFFT Wine, her favorite spots for Connecticut dining, and news regarding her book, Good Gifts. Happy Cooking: See Giada Live in CT at The Palace and Bushnell Theatres

Giada De Laurentiis New Cookbook Happy Cooking

Giada De Laurentiis has always been one of America’s favorite TV chefs. We all love watching her wash her hands, moaning as she eats, and the gratuitous revealing close-up shots, and of course her unique take on Italian recipes. All kidding aside, we’ve actually made many of Giada’s recipes for holiday dinners and they’ve always turned out to be some of the favorite dishes of the night. Continue reading

Experience Pizza at Its Best on The Connecticut Pizza Trail

20 Aug

The Tri-State area has no shortage of pizza joints that people can’t get enough of. And while NYC spots seem to always get a heaping portion of the praise and attention, Connecticut has been stealing the spotlight as of late. The Daily Meal’s 101 Best Pizzas in America of 2015 ranked 9 CT pies (Roseland, Ernie’s, Domenick and Pia’s, BAR, Zuppardi’s, Colony Grill, Modern Apizza, and Sally’s) on their list with Frank Pepe’s of New Haven taking the #1 spot. Oh, and last year? Yeah, they took the #1 spot also. As if that weren’t recognition enough for our good ‘ole Nutmeg state, Andrew Zimmern is also in love with CT pizza, placing both Sally’s and Pepe’s on the top of his favorite pizza list. And, Food & Wine placed Pepe’s on their Best Pizza Places in the U.S. list, too.

It’s awesome for CT to get so much (deserved) love. So awesome, in fact, that the Connecticut Office of Tourism created the Connecticut Pizza Trail so you can experience all of our state’s pizza glory. And, as official CT Food Correspondents for Connecticut, we wanted to help get the word out. The list below is a compilation of expert advice and customer love from social media. If you feel like your favorite pizza shop needs to be on this list, then throw your slice into the ring, like their Facebook page, then share your fave to their timeline or even send them a message to @CTVisit on Twitter. Our faves not on this list are Bar Sugo in Norwalk, ReNapoli in Greenwich, and Amore in Stamford.  Continue reading

You’ll Want Apizza This! Zuppardi’s Food Truck Slinging Killer Pies (Review)

18 Aug

Yes, yes, we know CT peeps are super hardcore about their favorite pies. But with all the big guys like Colony Grill, Pepe’s, Bar, Krust, and Stanziato’s, it’s easy to not even make it out to some of the other amazing pizza shops people are talking about . . . that is, until you luckily stumble upon them while brewery hopping with Dan’s brother and sister-in-law. While Zuppardi’s has been around since 1932 (they started as a bakery but transitioned into a pizzeria in the 1940s) in West Haven, they just recently rolled out their food truck and have been parking it outside of Stony Creek Brewery, which is where we found it. Two CT Hot Dog Joints Top The Daily Meal’s Top 75 Best Hot Dogs List

17 Jul

People tend to look to CT for killer pizza pies and legendary seafood, but we often don’t get enough credit for another of our great strengths: hot dogs. Yup, we’ve got some great spots that are grilling up and frying wieners all day long and it’s great to see that national outlets recognize us. And, although only 2 spots from The Nutmeg State got on The Daily Meal’s “America’s 75 Best Hot Dogs” 2015 list, we landed near the top.
