18 Jun

Well, what can we say but there’s a whole helluva lot going on in and around Fairfield County over the next two weeks.  So, in addition to our regular posts, we’ve gathered up some major highlights of things going on such as awesome events, special meals, beer news, beer dinners, cooking classes, farmers’ markets, festivals, ways to give back, and we give some props to a city in CT that just got some major press.  Check out more events here, too.

Cool (and Chow) Down

6/18-6/20:  Chef Storch of Match continues his themed lunches, this time with “Super Duper” Match.  And, if you’re wondering…yes, he’s featuring some of the greatest dishes from Super Duper Weenie:  the best hot dog joint in the world.  Check out Match’s FB page for the menu.

6/19:  The Chelsea in Fairfield is takin’ things back to ‘Nawlins with food and drink specials, mon cherie.  This is all in celebration of Marc Broussard hitting up Fairfield Theatre Company that day.

CT’s Biggest Food Truck Festival EVER, ever, ever: 1st Annual Connecticut Food Truck Festival

17 Jun
Set aside July 19 and 20...now...seriously...we'll wait...

Set aside July 19 and 20…now…seriously…we’ll wait…

Update:  the festival organizer changed the price for tickets to $5.  Bring your ticket back on Sunday and pay only $2 admission!

Connecticut peeps really like their food trucks.  And, on July 19 and 20 from 11-7 on both days, CT peeps are gonna fall straight up, head-over-heels in LOVE with a helluva lot of food trucks at the The Connecticut Food Truck Festival at the North Haven Fairgrounds.  Although the final details are still being worked out, there are already a few dozen trucks that have been signed up, with 40-50 expected by the time of the festival.  That brings this festival into the record books here in CT as the biggest food truck festival.  The previous record was at Westbrook Tanger Outlets with about 20 food trucks, and the recent RBS Food Truck Festival clocking in at 15.  And, the top record will soon be broken with an estimated 33 trucks at the Hamden Food Truck Festival…still not as big as the CT Food Truck Fest, though.

Long Live The Stamford Beer Garden, Coming Soon to Shippan Landing

16 Jun
Um, yes please!

Um, yes please!  (Artist rendering)

The Beer Garden at Shippan Landing will open Wednesday, July 30 at 4 pm!  The hours are 4-close Wednesday-Friday and at 2-close on Saturdays and Sundays!

Updated details!

• Opening is set for early July

• It’s a 15,000 square foot spot…damn!

• Designed by Rick Parisi of MPFP

• Add in horseshoes to the games that you can play

• And, also add in Bodega and Melt Mobile to the list of rotating trucks.

• Hours will be W-F from 4-last call and Saturday-Sunday from 2-last call.

One of the most successful businesses to open last year was The Beer Garden @ Harbor Point from Imian Hospitality.  From the start, the venture was only a temporary one…kind of like a good-weather-pop-up spot.  Guess it was kinda like The Fault in Our Stars:  you know the girl’s gonna die (oops, spoiler alert), but you stick with her anyway because you dig her.  (p.s. no we didn’t watch the movie, but it’s pretty darn predictable.) And, while we had our criticisms of The Beer Garden such as the bathroom situation, the long lines, the limited beer selection, or the fact that it wasn’t really a beer garden, things did seem to improve as the summer went on. There was more beer, there was a better selection, lines were shorter, there were lots of events, and it became the ultimate stop for beer guzzlers who love food trucks. Okay, well, that’s true of every beer guzzler, but you get our drift, right?

Hop, Skip + A Run 5k and Beer Festival from Half Full Brewery Kicks off Summer Right

6 Jun

Take all that you know and think about 5k races and toss ’em away because Half Full Brewery in Stamford has a brand new experience for you.  That experience?  The Hop, Skip & A Run 5k Race and Festival that’s coming to Stamford on June 29.  The race starts at 17 Harbor Point Road where Paloma will be, goes along the boardwalk, then into Kosciuszko Park.  Jordan Giles, Chief Beer Organizer, shared more about the race with us:  “Hop Skip & A Run is a truly unique 5K in that participants will literally hop and skip a (small) portion of the route while running the rest. As with nearly everything we do here at the Half Full Brewery, we thought long and hard about how to put our upbeat and positive Half Full spin on the event.”

Washington Prime Opening Mid-Summer in new Ironworks SoNo Building

6 Jun

SoNo’s getting a brand new restaurant and it’s called Washington Prime, Eating + Drinking Well.  It will be located in the brand new Ironworks SoNo…a similar set up like Harlan Social in the Harbor Point area of Stamford.

The People Behind Washington Prime

SoNo’s newest restaurant is a team effort with Rob Moss, Marco Siguenza, and Executive Chef Jared Falco.  Starting with Rob, he has been a manager at Match and Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar in Greenwich, and has helped to create cb5 restaurants such as Red Lulu, Lolita, Chinawhite, 30 Boltwood and OAK Longbar & Kitchen.  Marco has some excellent restaurant experience, too.  Like Rob, he has worked at Match, but he also has some other major restaurant cred for helping to open up 55 Degrees in Fairfield and Scena Wine Bar in Darien.  Although he is no longer connected with these restaurants, his cousins continue to run it and Marco starts this new endeavor.

Our new go-to spot + probably yours too: Port Chester Hall + Beer Garden

5 Jun

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Update:  we have been back a few times since our review and we have had mixed results. At times we have good service, at other times service is spotty and slow. During our last visit, the food wasn’t as good as it used to be. The burger, in particular, was bland, mushy, and disappointing while the chicken sandwich was also bland and uninteresting.

Last year when we heard that Heartland Brewery was opening up a new brewery in Port Chester, we darn near jumped for joy. First off, we live just a few minutes away. Secondly, we think that Port Chester is the most underrated place in our area and were psyched for people to show it some love. And thirdly, mmmm, beeeeeeer.

Now, a few months back we got a little worried and upset when we learned that it wasn’t actually going to be a brewery, but our frown got turned upside down when we learned that it would become a beer hall and a beer garden with beer pumped in from Heartland Brewery.  So, when the weather this past Saturday turned out to be beautiful, we knew what we had to do…

Oh beehive!  That’s cuz one of the world’s largest observation beehives is coming to Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk, starting at 11 am.  The hive will hold more than 50,000 honeybees and measures 4X5 feet.  Seems like a Common Core question in the making, huh?  The honey will eventually be collected (over 100 lbs. worth) and will then be sold right at Stew Leonard’s.  At the height of the season, there will be 75,000 bees inside!

KC and Anne will be playing the Station Eats Stamford outdoor beer garden starting at 6:30.  Get some burgers, get some brews, and just chill.
