Chef Cooper + Westport Farmers’ Market = A Wonderful Evening Forking It Over

13 Aug

We walked into Saugatuck Grain & Grape in Westport excited to kick off the Fork It Over event. While it was our first time at this event, we knew if Westport Farmers’ Market was at the helm, we were in for an amazing evening. A crowd had already gathered, conversation bubbled over from the entryway to the side room. Not wanting to waste any time at all, we grabbed our champagne, checked out the amazing liquor and wine variety, and ogled the Negroni cocktails they had aging in barrels. We also had some great conversations with Lori Cochran-Dougall, the Director of Westport Farmers’ Market, and Chef Bill Taibe of LeFarm/The Whelk/Kawa NI, talking about what’s new and delish in the CT food scene. Seasons change. The Earth tumbles ahead through fall, winter, spring, then summer. And, as the seasons change, so does the fruit and veggies that pop up magically from farm fields. Some get sold at the farm, some make their way to restaurants, and some are brought to many of the farmers’ markets that dot Connecticut now more than ever. And, at one of the markets, there’s a palpable energy, a strong core of farmers, restaurateurs, chefs, business owners, and freshconscious consumers. We are speaking of Westport Farmers’ Market, of course, founded by Paul Newman and Chef Michel Nischan.

Finally, after a tiny hibernation, the Westport Farmers’ Market is back! This not only marks a decade of back to back warm-air markets, but it also highlights their focus on keeping things local. It all began back in June 2006 when Paul Newman and Michel Nischan (he just received a James Beard Award for Humanitarian of the Year last night) started Westport Farmers’ Market.

The Whelk has changed their lunch hours to Fridays and Saturday from noon all the way until closing time. Kawa Ni and LeFarm is keeping their hours, so don’t freak out.

New Menu Items

Strada 18, Norwalk: there’s a new dish that you’ll want to try that is called Burricotta. That’s mozzarella filled with buttermilk ricotta and we’ve gotta try it STAT!

Paloma, Stamford: there are lots of new dishes on the menu including a new version of their grilled salmon. This one includes a fresh pea guacamole, pickled carrots for crunch, and a Meyer lemon mojo.

Washington PrimeGolden Age Cocktail at Paloma in Stamford, CT, Norwalk: it’s not just food that’s new come spring time, it’s also the drinks! One of the new drinks for warmer weather is The Coco which includes Cilantro Rhum Clement Barrel Select, Clement Mahina Coco, Cream of Coconut, Fresh Lime, and Fresh Coconut.

Amore, Stamford: Chef Jared Falco has been hard at work with a killer Sunday brunch that you can devour from 11-3. Some of the dishes that we can’t wait to try are the “Boh” Sandwich that features chicken park, two fried eggs, sriracha, Eddie’s bread, and shoe string fries; the BEC Sandwich that has braised pork belly, creamy ricotta, two scrambled eggs, house ketchup, Eddie’s bread, and shoe string fries; Steak and Eggs with an 8 oz. NY Strip, poached eggs, Calabrian chili-truffle Hollandaise, and duck fat potatoes. The menu is just plain ridiculous and should be on your brunch radar!

CT Beer News and Events

You’ll meet at 10:45 right at Stony Creek for your first tour and tasting.

Kent Falls Brewing Co. has doubled production of their Field Beer Saison, so check your local packy and get your hands on those bad boys! Fairfield County peeps: it’ll be at Warehouse Wines & Liquors in Danbury, so check it out and here for other locations.

Matsu for Monster Good Sushi – Westport, CT

5 Jan

When we lived in Westport back in ’04, we became rabid sushi eaters. A typical week saw us picking up or getting sushi delivery at least twice a week. You might say we had a problem, though we’re sure Matsu Sushi didn’t think so since we usually got it from them! They were not only conveniently located right down the street, but their sushi was always fresh and delicious.

But, it’s been a loooong while since we’d been, so long in fact that we hadn’t realized that when we were invited to check out Matsu, that this was the restaurant we had always ordered from. Quite a happy coincidence!

Parking was very easy across the street at the Library (which we *think* is legal after hours, but we can’t be held accountable if not, lol). That particular night we had the pleasure of dining with one of the owners, Paul Teoh and his partner. They took us through their menu, their history, sushi culture, and seemingly every single dish on their menu.

So let’s dive in…
