Sure, we like to be fancy sometimes. Fancy restaurants with fancy names, fancy dishes, fancy wines, and fancy decor. But sometimes, sometimes we like to get down and dirty with some butter, cheese, and all things greasy! Well, Burgers, Shakes & Fries was all that and a basket of sweet tots… but more on that later.
In the spot where Bruegger’s Bagels used to reside (who needs chain bagels anyway?), Burgers, Shakes & Fries, or BSF for short, is a great addition to the sometimes slightly stuffy Darien. With a fun, laid back atmosphere, BSF features a simple menu hanging on the wall, an old fashion malt shop-esque bar to order your food, and a bonus drink bar to order beers and wine. A nice in between of a simple burger joint like Five Guys and a sit-down restaurant like Flipside.
Ok, so I’m just going to warn you now that we ordered enough food for a family of four, but I assure you, it was just us two. I had my favorite burger combo of cheddar, tomato, raw onions, pickles, ketchup, and mayo, while Danny had some fun with his creation adding a fried egg, bacon, and hot peppers. But we didn’t stop there. Danny also ordered up a hot dog with ketchup (a sin in my mind), relish, sauerkraut, hot peppers, and raw onion. Then of course we were sharing a basket of fries, a basket of onion rings, and a basket of sweet potato tots (based on the strong recommendation of @Travrsn). Oh yeah, and a vanilla milkshake for me, and a coffee one for Danny. What? We’re food bloggers. It’s our job to sample a little of everything. (This helps me sleep at night, so just go with it, k?)
So let’s start with the highlights. The burgers are served on buttered. White. Toast. Yes, you heard me. Buttered. White. Toast. HOLY YUM! Seriously, I’ve decided all burgers should come on buttered white toast. Danny and I both agreed that the burgers were cooked very nicely, were super juicy, and had a great taste to them (not just bland ‘ole meat, and nothing fancy either… the perfect burger really). The toppings were done nicely too, with Danny’s egg yolk nice and soft and the bacon perfectly crispy! Also a highlight were the onion rings. A nice crispy, thick coating of beer batter and a sprinkle of salt… just how we like them!
The sweet tots are a GENIUS addition to the menu. What’s not to love about sweet potatoes cut and shaped into tots and then deep fried? The taste was great, but unfortunately they were a bit soggy. Not sure if this is the norm, or if that batch just didn’t get enough love from the frier. We’ll have to try them again to be sure. Oh darn!! The fries too, were not bad at all, but could’ve used more deep-frying time and some more salt.
And last, but so not least, the milk shakes. These were nice and thick, but not so thick that you couldn’t get it through the straw without the threat of an aneurysm. Danny’s coffee shake tasted delish with a nice strong coffee flavor. Too often coffee shakes don’t taste enough like coffee, but this one did. My vanilla shake was ok, but I like the vanilla to be super strong and this just wasn’t. I definitely prefer the vanilla Filling Station’s shake by far.
Needless to say, we both felt pretty roly poly after this meal (which by the way was just after picking up my new running shoes… man, I better get on that). We would definitely recommend this as a good, go-to burger joint that’s a great local alternative to Five Guys (hey, we love ’em too, but we always pick local first)!Noms: 3.25 Price: $ Burgers, Shakes & Fries Address: 800 Post Road, Darien, CT 06820
