Captain Lawrence Taps Into a Cure and Hosts Pig Roast – Elmsford, NY

19 Jun

Ready for two weekends of events at Captain Lawrence Brewing Company in Elmsford, just over the border in New York?  Of course you are…dumb question!

This Saturday, 6/22, marks the return of Captain Lawrence Brewing Company’s annual pig roast.  The fun goes on for six hours straight from 12-6 pm and is $40 per person online or is $50 at the door.  Your ticket purchase includes entrance to the pig roast, beer, music, cornhole, bocce, and even transportation from the Port Chester, Tarrytown, and North White Plains train stations.  Music will be provided by Rebecca Haviland & Whiskey Heart, Evan Watson’s Old Orchard Band, and Brooklyn Sugar Company.  The roast pig and other BBQ goodness will be provided by Village Dog of Tarrytown at an additional cost, but remember that your entrance fee gets you tastes of classic CLBC brews as well as some great new ones.  Think of it this way:  after just 7 brews, you’ve already made up the cost.  Besides, you’ll be helping raise money (Project Barn Raiser) for Hemlock Hill.  Buy your tickets here:  http://clbcpigroast.bpt.me.  Just a few notes:  you can park off of Executive Boulevard because they’ll be closing up their parking lot so people can hang out and chill.  You need to be 21 or older to attend and need to bring valid ID.

Captain Lawrence Brewing Company Sails to Its New Home in Elmsford, NY

13 Sep

When we visited a packed Captain Lawrence Brewing in Pleasantville, NY last August we knew they had to be itching to move into a bigger, better place.  Then, just a short while later, they did just that, moving to an even more awsomerest spot in Elmsford, NY.  So, like any devoted beer loving couple we had to check it out STAT.

When you’re driving down Saw Mill River Road, you’ll need to keep an eye out for the Captain Lawrence sign or you might miss it.  Drive around the back, park, then head up to the brewery for a good time.  Before you enter you’ll notice there’s a super fun outdoor area with a bocce ball court and picnic tables where you can sip, eat, and relax.  We had already decided this was just the best damn brewery ever before we even entered. It only got better from there, though.

Inside you’ll find a huge tasting room with a few tables here and there (some are barrels) where people were playing cards, a line for filling up growlers, a line for purchasing beer, lines for tastings, and a line for food orders.  Yes, there’s food too. Heck yeah!  We had the choice of a meat & cheese plate, Taim hummus trio, Tierra Farms nut bowl, Slant Shack NY jerky, or marinated olive bowl.  We went with the hummus:  roasted red pepper, basil, and truffle.  All three were delicious and went well with all of the beer we tasted.

Beer Ahoy! Captain Lawrence Brewing Company – Pleasantville, NY

24 Aug

Update:  Captain Lawrence Brewing Company is now open in their new home in Elmsford, NY.

The last time we stopped by a brewery, we spent an hour at New England Brewing Company. That was a great time and we loved the beer there. Now, we had heard about Captain Lawrence Brewing Company a while back, but never seemed to be available on a Saturday to check it out. The gods of hops and brew intervened for us and we made our way into Pleasantville, NY. Just a few minutes off of 287, it’s not that far of a drive.

A brewista hard at work

We were immediately amazed because of how busy and noisy it was before we even entered. Here’s why, we figured out: on Saturdays, brewistas give out nice sized samples of their signature beers. Now, don’t mess things up, because there’s a very specific way to taste the beer. Along the L shaped bar, at the part facing the door, you can walk up and buy kegs for around 10 bucks, or around 13 if you don’t have a growler. This is NOT where you order your samples, though. Walk up to the long part of the bar, ask to try the flight of beers, light to dark we suggest. When you get your beer, promptly move the hell out of the way.

Each time we had a beer, we walked around the brewery and looked at the machinery, the vats, and the fun decorations. Lots of people were around, chatting, having a great time. It’s definitely a great place to be and a great place to take some friends.

Beers on tap:

Healthy size sample of beer…FREE!

Kölsch-Very light beer, easy to go down. Great as a summer beer, straw in color.

Liquid Gold-Belgian Pale Ale with more body than the Kölsch. Kristien loved this one and I liked it too. Great smell, with a body to die for: hints of clove and citrusy goodness. Light to medium.

Freshchester Pale Ale-American Pale Ale in style, this is Captain Lawrence’s most popular beer. Medium body APA that’s a bit bitter–that’s fun to say.

Imperial Reserve Imperial IPA-Enjoy this puppy with some nice, thick, and heavy flavors like BBQ. Clocking in at an impressive 9% ABV (18 proof for your noobs), it’s a strong one so go easy…or don’t. You definitely get that distinct piny taste here. To me, it’s more of a beer to drink with food, rather than by itself.

Pleasantville Smoked Porter-My fave, without a doubt. Nice and thick, heavy, with definite flavors of coffee swishing around. A great porter that really had the smokiness up front in the taste.

Golden Delicious-Kristien’s favorite, not mine. In terms of being one-of-a-kind, this beer wins. It’s an American Tripel, with Amarillo hops and aged in Apple Brandy barrels. Golden Delicious has a wonderful, unique smell. She says it’s like drinking an apple. There’s a strong, liquorish finish at the end that gently slaps you.

Also, keep eyes and ears out because Scott Vaccaro, brewer/owner/awesome guy likes to travel around and have beer dinners. Just recently, he stopped by Stamford’s own Coalhouse Pizza for a pig roast. Also, click here to see where you can get a brew at a restaurant if you can’t get to the brewery to buy 20 growlers and need a quick fix. By bottle, we’ve seen Captain Lawrence on the shelf at BevMax, our mecca for all things hops related. Fairway in Stamford also has a killer selection of beer, but not sure if they have Captain Lawrence.

Summer, outdoor dining, Captain Lawrence beer, pig roast? There! Coalhouse Pizza–Stamford, CT

26 May

Rain, rain go away, come again…screw that, never come again!  Haven’t you just about had it with the rain lately and all the bleakness that not even an emo kid could handle? Well, summer’s just around the corner and so are the great outdoor dining and beer paired events that Coalhouse Pizza has to offer.  This time around, June 20, we’ve got a pig roast featuring the brews of Captain Lawrence Brewing Company from nearby Pleasantville, NY.  A couple of months back we tried their Imperial (Double) IPA and it’s killah, wicked killah.  The courses highlight some of the great tastes of summer including a nice Mexican corn on the cob and an oh so slow roasted pork with smoked baked beans.  The dessert, as always, looks like it’ll be freaking redonkulous.

Scott Vacarro, the owner and brewmaster of Captain Lawrence Brewing Company will be on hand to talk about his beers and so that you may bow to him in holy reverence.  To cover up the noise of people pigging out (pun intended), classic rockers Tired on Sunday will be performing live.  Tickets, as always with Gerard’s events, are going fast.

June 20, 7 pm

$65 per person

Beer club members get 10% off ticket price…do the math punks, that’s $6.50 off.
