Fairfield Cheese Company Spreads the Love with Greenwich Cheese Company, Opening Soon

Days and night have we prayed. Dear provider of cheese, meats, spreads, and all things nomworthy…come to us. Heap your love and your provisions upon us. Long have we suffered the cruel deceivingly short distance on 95 from Greenwich to Fairfield, but yeah, our prayers have been answered. Amen, our cheese loving brethren…amen.

Amen because the award-winning and amazing Fairfield Cheese Company is expanding into Greenwich! Yup, the same shop that pulled in a top five spot of places to buy cheese in America from Food & Wine and a back-to-back winner of CT Magazine’s Best Cheese Selection. Co-owners Chris Palumbo and Laura Downey’s new shop will be at 154 East Putnam Avenue where the Cos Cob Laundry used to be. It’s also located right next to Fjord Fisheries, so you could get all your seafood, cheese, meat, and goodies shopping done in one trip. And, really, what else could you possibly need?

Could Fairfield Cheese Company be the big cheese this year?

Hmm…what’s that smell?

Oh, it’s just the 4th Annual Cheesemonger Invitational being held in Long Island City this year.  Yeah, that’s where that holy aroma of cheese is coming from.  On June 29, 56 cheesemongers from across the country will do battle to see who’s the big cheese…literally.  And, in the trenches that day you will find Chris Palumbo and Laura Downey, co-owners of Fairfield Cheese Company.  “We have worked hard during the past four years to put Fairfield Cheese Company on the map, and the invitation to compete helps to solidify us as a preeminent shop in the area and the country,” said Chris in a recent press release.  Attendees will not only be able to witness the epic cheese battles, but they’ll be able to graze (or pit out) on a smörgåsbord of cheese prepared by last year’s winners.

Fairfield Cheese Company Celebrates 4 Years with Case Takeover, Burgers, and Beer Tasting

Although it might seem like they’ve been around forever, Fairfield Cheese Company only started cheesemongering four years ago.  Owners Laura Downey and Chris Palumbo transformed Fairfield Cheese Company from a local shop into a culinary destination and inspiration.  Their shop is known for their amazing selection of small batch and farmstead cheeses, their charcuterie, and the variety of excellent food in the store.  In fact, just a few people know (heavy on sarcasm) about how great the store is.  They won tiny (more sarcasm) awards from Connecticut Magazine in 2011 and 2012 for having the best cheese selection and were even recognized by Food and Wine Magazine as being one of the top five places to buy cheese in the US.

Both Laura and Chris wanted to do something big to show their appreciation for the recognition and to their customers so they are hosting a Case Takeover.  This is a fun new idea that you can liken to bars and restaurants doing tap takeovers that highlight one particular beer.  Except, we’re not talking brews (keep reading though) here, we’re talking ’bout cheese, glorious cheese.  In fact, we’re talking about two cheese producers:  Columbia Cheese and Jasper Hill Cellars.  The cheese from both of these producers will literally take over the cases in a decisive victory for your taste buds.  The Case Takeover is happening on Saturday, May 4.  During the day, representatives from Columbia Cheese and Jasper Hill Cellars will be on hand to talk about their cheese, how it’s made, and to answer any of your questions.  Plus, the nice people at Saugatuck Craft Butchery will be providing cheeseburger sliders to help in the celebration from 1-4.  What?  Need something to wash that down with?  Well, take part in a beer tasting from a local CT brewery, too, during the same time.  In addition, there will be prizes, t-shirt giveaways, and refreshments, too.
