Aspetuck Brew Lab Brewery + Taproom Coming to Black Rock, CT

24 Feb

One of the best things to do during the summer in Connecticut is check out Harbor Brew Fest in Bridgeport. There are always a ton of beers that we’ve never tried before and sometimes you get tastes of local CT brews that are in the development stages. One such place that we discovered this summer was Aspetuck Brew Lab run by the husband and wife team of Peter Cowles and Tara Kasaks Cowles, at the time planning to open in Fairfield. Tara is the co-founder and COO, so she’ll be handling the sales, management, and some of the marketing for the brewery, while Peter (the other co-founder) is the CEO and Chief Beer Scientist. In terms of making beer, he’s no n00b, having taken in many awards and medals in national beer competitions and even seeing his Black IPA (Sir Blackheart) being chosen by Heartland Brewery as Best-in-Show with the honor of having his beer being poured out for an entire month at their NYC spots.

Firefly Hollow Tap Takeover at Craft 260 in Fairfield!

20 Feb

image

It’s been too many weeks since we checked out Firefly Hollow and we’re still in withdrawl. Turns out it’s an awesome spot in Bristol where you can feed your need for beer by the growler, pint, flight, or even bottle. When we went, everything we had was just great, especially the Cone Flakes Double IPA. Truly, one of the best Imperial IPAs out there.

20 Ton Ale from Two Roads: Big, Bad, Bold Blonde Barleywine Released

3 Dec

image

This just in from Two Roads: they’ve released their 20 Ton Ale and it’s bound to knock you out cold. This continuation of the “Road Less Traveled Series” is a Blonde Barleywine-style beer that is made with heirloom malts and has plenty of hoppiness to it. It boasts a 12% ABV, so watch out, people! To get tastes of this, you’ll need to head to the brewery, though.

While you’re there, you can get 6.5 oz pours (cuz a pint would just kick your ass too fast) and take this bad boy home in bombers. After you’ve tasted, please let us know what you think by commenting here. And, if you can’t make it to the brewery, keep checking your favorite local beer shop for the bombers!

Must Buy: Bar’s 15th Annual CT Real Ale Festival Tix on Sale Today – New Haven, CT

Connecticut Real Ale Festival Bru Rm Bar
As opposed to the 15th Annual CT Fake Ale Festival?

Ah, something new to learn, people:  Real ales are top-fermented and undergo a secondary fermentation in the same bottle or cask in which they are served. As we just hinted at, Cask beers are considered real ales. This unique brewing process offers up added flavors, notes, and even in some cases a different kind of mouthfeel.

In a few weeks on December 13, we have a good hunch where you’ll be: at the inaugural BeerConn at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport. You should be able to buy these tickets today, so keep checking their site!

And, as for the drinkable deets, here we go:

The Fermenting Upward Growth of CT Beer and a Call to Action

17 Oct

As food bloggers here in Fairfield County, we’ve seen the food & beverage scene grow immensely since we started back in 2010. One of the biggest areas in the food and bev biz to kick some serious butt has been CT breweries! Just think, in 2011, we had just 16 breweries, in 2012 we had 21 breweries, in 2013 there were 23, and now, we have 30 in-state breweries that are open with 45 breweries slated to be open by 2015*. Doing the math on that, that’s current growth of a whopping 81.25% since 2011! And the best thing is, these breweries are not just about making beer for beer’s sake…they’re about making good beer that we can all be darn proud of! Which brings us to our point…

Not enough of the rest of the U.S. knows about all the great beers CT has to offer and it’s about time they did! Now, to be fair, some of this is due to limited distribution, although things are getting better. As example, The CT Brewers Guild has become a unifying force in putting CT beer forward as a whole with an all for one and one for all mentality. And, this past year has seen CT breweries take sizable steps into new markets like Two Roads pushing into NYC, MA, and Rhode Island, Half Full pouring out brews in Westchester County, Thomas Hooker bringing suds to MA, NJ, NY, and PA and Overshores even expanding distribution to Washington, DC.
