Black Hog Brewing in Oxford Premieres 4 Brews + We Taste Em!

30 Jul

Black Hog Brewing, based out of Oxford, announced last Saturday that their brews would soon be on tap at bars and restaurants throughout CT.  We know people probably wet themselves with excitement…and we were part of the wetters.  Our curiosity with Black Hog was stoked back in April when we had the chance to talk with Jason Sobocinski who along with brother Tom (both of Caseus in New Haven) and Head Brewer Tyler Jones (formerly of Portsmouth Brewpub) would open up Black Hog in the former Cavalry Brewing building in Oxford.  They got everybody excited and, if your favorite spot didn’t have it, people were urged to ask.  So, we did what most people here in the Stamford area would do:  we got in touch with Gerard Robertson, owner of Coalhouse Pizza.  Turns out he already had them on tap and had all four Black Hog brews that they are launching their brewery with.

So, after we judged the Fairway Firefighter Cook-Off, you best believe we hit up Coalhouse with fellow judge, beer savant, and Stamford Advocater, Scott Gargan.  Our mission:  try all 4 brews and report back to you.

Well, here we go:

CT Food + Beer News, Vol. 12: Summer Fun, Food Truck Festivals, Openings, CT Beer, and More…

10 Jul

We hope your summer is off to a great start and that it’s action-packed.  Personally, we’re booked solid all the way up until September with events, restaurant reservations, beer nights, and other great things going on in CT.  so, let’s help you book up some time for this week and next week.  In Volume 12 read about food truck festivals, events, what’s new with CT beer, and the nitty gritty on restaurants news.

Restaurant News

Chef Aaron Sanchez who is ready to open Paloma in the Harbor Point area of Stamford sat down with Ken Tuccio of the Welcome to Connecticut Podcast yesterday.  You can hear the podcast next Thursday.  While you’re there, check out the episodes with Black Hog Brewery, Stew Leonard, and Jordan from Half Full.  Listen through his website or by subscribing on iTunes…your choice.

Chef Merlin Verrier, formerly of Primary Food & Drink in Greenwich, has hopped on board the Fortina train as they expand from Armonk into Stamford and Rye Brook, NY.  He’ll be joining Chef Christian Petroni and crew as the Culinary Director.

SKAL Restaurant Group, led by Christian Burns, has taken over the operations side of Post 154 in Westport.  According to a recent press release, Christian said that he’ll help Post 154 to “carve out its food and beverage identity.”  Some new things to look forward to are more craft cocktails, a “seasonal and creative menu,” house-infused spirits, and a beautiful craft beer menu.  OmNomCT readers know SKAL Restaurant Group as the owner of both Cask Republics and Ginger Man SoNo and New Haven.   Considering our first experience at Post 154, we think this will be a great change to shake up things in Westport even more!

Join Todd Ruggere on 1/11 as he sets off to drink a brew in all 169 CT towns

1 Jan

Update:  Farmboys Smokin’ BBQ (2013 OmNomy Winner for Best BBQ) will be on hand from 1-7 for some awesome winter BBQ!

A few months ago we shared the story of Todd Ruggere and his mission:  to drink a beer in all 169 Connecticut towns in 2014.  Talk about a New Year’s resolution, geesh.  But, he’s not doing it just because beer is awesome.  He’s got real heart in his CT Pour Tour.  He’s raising money to help fund pediatric cancer research in order to wipe it off the planet.  Along the way he’ll stop at breweries, drink brews at bars and restaurants, meet new friends and drink in their homes, drink an amazing amount of Connecticut beer, and undoubtedly will partake in some craziness.  What kind of craziness do you ask?  Well, one of his stops for his tour of all 351 MA towns was a nudist colony.  While we’re not sure if there’s a nudist colony here, he does face unique challenges such as some towns that don’t have a bar or even Bridgewater which is a dry town.

19 Dec
New England Brewing Company Logo
We told you about New England Brewing Co. of Woodbridge moving down the road to some bigger digs back on September 3.   And, dear beer lovers, the day has finally come when you can check out their new brewery.  So, let’s get this started….
The first official day for growlers fills is this Saturday, 12/21.  They’ll be filling you up with six different NEBCO brews, though Matt and co. want to keep the exact lineup a surprise.  Hmm, wonder what they’ll have?   With New England Brewing, it’s hard to tell because they are so dark, brooding, and mysterious…
And, to make your Christmas a NEBCO Christmas, you can stop by for grower fills and tastings on Monday from 3-7 and Tuesday 11-3.  Just sayin’:  if they have 668:  Neighbor of the Beast on tap, you could serve it honor of your in-laws visiting or your evil twin.  Just sayin’.
