Cluck Yeah: Connecticut Wingfest Flies into Danbury this January

15 Jan

Hot Wings are an American gift, an American duty, dare we even say an American right? Yes, those hot and spicy little bites of heaven are on nearly every restaurant menu and seem to be the perfect accompaniment to a nice pint or six of beer. Whether you like the wingette, the drumette, like them with celery, with carrot, with ranch, whether you do that trick where you smoosh down the meat until it pops off the bone, it’s clear we all have our own ways to devour our Hot Wings.
However you eat those wings, you’ll definitely want to head out to Danbury on January 24th for the first annual Wing Fest! The event, $15 per person, is being held at the Matrix Conference Center (39 Old Ridgebury Rd) from 5-9 and will feature some of the area’s best wings. Once you enter, you’ll get 12 free wing vouchers with each additional voucher costing $2 each. When you’ve picked your favorite, just drop your Connecticut’s Best Wing token into your favorite restaurant’s bucket. There will also be a panel of judges who are doing blind tastings so that they can find their favorite of the bunch, too. Oh, and bring some extra cash for beer too, because they’ll be serving up 12 oz. pours of Half Full Bright Ale and Toasted Amber. One last thing: from 6-8, Super Bowl Champ New York Giant Jeff Feagles will be on hand signing free autographs.

As of now, here are the participants (with 1-2 to be added):

Ibiza Tapas Restaurant + Wine Bar: a taste de las tapas Españolas en Danbury

4 Aug

After taking a trip to Barcelona, Spain a couple years back we became a little “tapas shy” back here in the states.  Ok, we know what you’re thinking, OmNomCT shy about anything, let alone food?  Yeah right!  It’s true though!  We had such amazing tapas in the motherland that we were afraid we might be a bit disappointed by the local tapas spots.  But, after Ibiza owner, Ignacio Blanco assured us that his tapas were the real-deal (and he should know, he’s from Spain and has spent a lot of time there), we said, what the heck, let’s do it!So last Sunday evening we headed on over after we worked up an appetite failing miserably at a round of golf in Southbury.  The restaurant is in a bit of an odd location within a strip mall, but they’ve done a nice job making you forget that once you get in.  The walls are sleek and dark, the lighting dim, and there were some festive brightly colored paintings throughout, much like many of the tapas spots we went to in Barcelona.  The scene wasn’t too lively, but it was a Sunday night which usually tends to be a chill night for restaurants.  Before we went at it, we talked with Ignacio a bit and learned more about his experiences in Spain and his other restaurants, including Miegas (another tapas restaurant) in Norwalk which we LOVED but never got a chance to write up back in 2010. Stanziato’s Serves Up Killer Pies and More in Danbury, CT

17 Sep

Look who got off their lazy assez (we are using z’s in honor of Matt Stanczak who loves to use them) and headed up to Danbury to not only visit some great friendz, but also check out a restaurant that we’ve been dying to try.  Yeah, that would be uz visiting the house and famed garden of Renato and Alicia Ghio…who we like to call our couple twinz because we have so much awesomenezz in common.  We’ve done a lot of nomming together:  we visited Nicholaz Robertz together, they came for the Victory Brewz N’ Bacon dinner at Coalhouse, we chomped on some wicked Mexican at Panchoz Tacoz in Danbury, so we figured it was about time to take thiz to the next level.

The restaurant we decided that we all needed to hit up together…you guessed it, Stanziato’z!  Kristien’z friend and coworker, Jay, only told us to go like, ooooooh two yearz ago. And, we were reminded again just weekz before when we were sitting next to Matt (the owner) at Chef Bick’z farm-to-table dinner at Hollbrook Farmz.  So that seemed to be the final sign to get our buttz in gear and try it out.  Pluz, it didn’t hurt that Renato and Alicia said they had a gargantuan bottle of Ommegang Three Philosopherz that they needed help with.  Yeah, we’re good friendz like that.
