Local Community and Markets Come Together to Provide Meals this Thanksgiving

27 Nov
Community Plates Rescue Run

Karol Brumit loads up her car at Fairway with the help of Tom Hauser, new Community Plates Fairfield County Site Director

This past weekend Coalhouse Pizza teamed up with Two Roads Brewery in Stratford and us for a fundraiser that would benefit Community Plates.  Although we were busy during the day, an amazing amount of people went out for brunch, for pizza, for drinks, and to help out.  When we did come by for dinner, we were amazed to see every table taken and people waiting for seats.  What a great turnout!  And, it turns out that Gerard Robertson (owner and beer god) confirmed that through sales that day he’s going to be donating $650 to Community Plates.  That money will go a long way in helping them to end hunger in Fairfield County and beyond by rescuing food from restaurants and markets then delivering it to food banks and local organizations.

One such provider of food is Fairway Market of Stamford.  They recently donated 140 turkeys, 15 cases of yams, and a pallet of Vitamin Water to the Norwalk-based Community Plates.  From there, food runners loaded up their cars and delivered the food to Mid Fairfield Aids Project, Norwalk Grassroots Tennis, Wilson Food Pantry and Person to Person.  Also, Trader Joe’s in Darien, Fairfield, Stamford, and Westport are important leaders in the food rescue community, providing their pre and post Thanksgiving food to Community Plates.

If you’d like to give back, there’s lots to do:

  1. Volunteer at a soup kitchen or food bank on a monthly basis
  2. Donate to a food bank, soup kitchen, or Community Plates
  3. Help rescue food and deliver it to those who need it via Community Plates
  4. Organize fundraisers
  5. Take part in organized food donations at stores, school, and markets

Happy Thanksgiving everybody,

Dan and Kristien

Local Firefighters Having 25% Shopping Night at Fairway for Neighbor to Neighbor – Stamford, CT

20 Jul

On June 16, Fairway Market held Fairway’s Firefighter Food Face-Off.  It was The Cos Cob Fire Police Patrol vs. Noroton Heights Fire Department vs. Stamford Fire Department.  In an epic battle of ribs, burgers, and vegetable skewers, The Cos Cob Fire Police Patrol smoked the competition–double pun definitely intended.  For winning, they won a $500 Fairway gift card and also received an amazing honor.  They were allowed to pick a charity that would benefit from a special shopping night at Fairway where 25% of registered sales went right to their favorite cause.

Photo from http://ccfpp.org

Their charity of choice:  Neighbor to Neighbor of Greenwich.  They provide food, clothes, and other necessities to families in need.  Believe it or not, they feed 275 families per week.  So, it’s pretty amazing for them to get a HUGE 25% of registered sales.  The fundraiser goes down on Wednesday, 7/25/12 from 4 to 9 pm.  All you need to do to help raise money is register when you enter Fairway of Stamford then shop, shop, shop.    When you check out, make sure to give your form to the cashier.

You might remember that on July 11, Fairway had a fundraiser for Officer Troy Strauser, who had fallen 20 feet during a foot chase.    This commitment to the community and to the people who protect us is part of what makes Fairway an awesome place to shop.   Fairway Market also provides firefighters with a discount at all eight Fairway Market locations!

Look, you’ve gotta buy food, right?  Just buy it Wednesday and do some good.

A Paesano’s Guide to the Perfect Holiday Dinner « Our CBS Connecticut Post for Christmas!

10 Dec

Which deli has you covered for Christmas dinner?

Here’s one of our favorite posts that we’ve ever created!  Click through to find the article and feel free to comment, of course. ;)

“The ornaments are hung on the tree, with presents overflowing underneath.  Christmas music plays softly, cinnamon and pine waft through the air, and conversation fills the house.   The food’s on the stove, in the oven, and the dinner hosts are doing their best balancing acts.  For these home chefs, cooking can be time consuming and stressful, but getting the ingredients doesn’t have to be.  And, if you’re Italian or would like to pretend to be for the holidays, ingredients make the meal and bring the amore.  Be prepared, though.  Being Italian means that you prepare a big meal on Christmas Eve with seafood and a molto bene Christmas dinner too.  Well, to help you along we’ve put together a guide to help you pull off the perfect Italian holiday dinner.  Buon Natale.”

What four places did we feature as go-to spots?  Click through and find out…it’s like unwrapping a present.

Lidia Bastianich Coming to Stamford Fairway for WNET Fundraiser with Wine and Food Tastings

24 Oct

Lidia's Italy in America, from wliw.org

My mom’s gonna be so jealous.  Yeah, Lidia Bastianich is coming to Stamford’s Fairway Market on November 5, 2011.  The same Lidia who hosts Lidia Cooks from the Heart of Italy, founder of Bastianich Winery, pasta and sauce maker, and the owner of four restaurants in NYC.  Both Fairway and Lidia have joined foodie forces to help support WNET, providing CT and NY with great programming through THIRTEEN and WLIW21.  The fundraising part will take place at Fairway Wines & Spirits on Friday and Saturday, 11/4-11/5.  Fairway will be donating 10% of their profits from their amazing selection of wine, liquor, and especially beer.  Think we’ll have to pick up some Delirium Tremens, some Rogue Ales, or some Caduceus Vineyards wine while we’re there.

That’s not it, either.  There will be wine tastings going on so you’ll be able to try Lidia’s wine either Friday or Saturday.

Ok, now for the food-crazed fans of Lidia:  she’ll be appearing Saturday to sign her books Lidia’s Italy in America and Nonna Tell Me a Story:  Lidia’s Christmas Kitchen and she’ll be signing her wine bottles, too.

Ok, and now just for the food-crazed people.  There will be tons of free samples of her pasta, her sauces, and some of Fairway’s best food specials for fall.

Make sure you leave early to come to Fairway because we have a feeling this will pack up the store more than it was at its opening.  Ciao,  a presto!
