Whether you want to take your kid to Stamford Museum & Nature Center or you just want to check out all the cute animals, we’ve got a great weekend event to share with you:  Spring on the Farm Festival

Weekend!  This two day farm and food party goes from 11-3 pm on both May 17 and May 18 and costs $5 for members or $10 for non-members.  Check out all the cute baby animals and your favorite farm friends, too.  You’ll also be able to see the SM&NC sheep get sheared, then see how that wool becomes felt and yarn.  And, there are a whole lot of other things going on too including “llama trekking” (we don’t know what this is, but we SO need to do this), face painting, crafts, live music, and even a plant and herb sale.  Oh, and…what?  Where’s the food?  Pssshhh, you know we won’t leave ya hanging…

Live local this summer season

The Westport Farmers’ Market (we love how they use the apostrophe in the correct place, btw) is back for some more action with the kickoff of their 2014 summer season.  This is their 9th summer season and with everything they have planned for the coming months, this will probably be their best season ever.  WFM takes place at 50 Imperial Avenue from 10-2 pm every Thursday, starting on 5/22 and going all the way until 11/6.

Some highlights for this season include:

• Produce, products, and meats from a huge list of vendors (full list below)

Lobstercraft is in da house!

• Local chefs will have weekly demos, highlighting local food from 10:15-11 (list coming soon)

• Demos on healthy living, food prep, butchering demos from Craft Butchery, and more

• WFM has a local non-profit host each week, raising vital funds for nearly 30 organizations.

• Artist Alley will feature some of the area’s best artists the first Thursday of each month.

Contrary to popular belief, bacon is not the only pork product.  There are chops, loins, pork belly, spare ribs, and even some more popular cuts.  Also, there are the uncommonly used parts at restaurants and home like the crackling, cheeks, ears, feet, tail, and lardo.  Oh lardo, how we love you.

How exactly do we get these cuts and parts of the pig….what do we call them and what do we do with them?  Well, wonder no more!  Chef Tim LaBant (recently featured on PBS) of The Schoolhouse at Cannondale will take you on a tour from snout to tail on March 15 from 11 to 2 pm at Millstone Farm in Wilton.  Tickets to attend are $70 per person and that includes tax and tip.

Chef Bick Brings the Farm Back to the Table at Holbrook Farm in Bethel

Executive Chef Michael Bick of Some Things Fishy Catering is back at it again.  This Sunday at 4pm at Holbrook Farm in Bethel, he’s putting on another great farm to table event.  Yes, this is the same 2012 OmNomy winner of Best Special Event because of the great food, the passion for all things local, and the beautiful outdoor dining right on the farm that make up each and every special dinner that Chef Bick has planned.  Tickets are $75 and go fast so you’ll want to get your reservations by calling up (203) 722-2444 or e-mailing michael@somethingsfishycatering.com.  This farm to table dinner is BYOB, so you’ll definitely want to bring some liquid fun to celebrate the start of summer.  Check out friend’s blog, Local Food Rocks, for two different reviews…first an experience at Butcher’s Best and a dinner on Holbrook Farm.
