Beer Garden @ Harbor Point Has Final Shindig; Where to Get Beer in Stamford

17 Dec

The Beer Garden @ Harbor Point is having its going away party on Friday, 12/20, starting at 8 pm.  There will be live music and, yes, food trucks (when we get confirmation, we’ll let you know which ones).  Oh, did we mention there will be beer too?

But, it’s not a final farewell, Imian Hospitality continues to look for that perfect new spot.  We wish them lots of luck.

Don’t despair, though…here are some places in Stamford with lots of taps that don’t serve crap beer:

Over 500 Bottles, 50 Taps: World of Beer Coming to Stamford, Harbor Point

27 Sep

(All photos from World of Beer site)

Update:  World of Beer is open and here’s our review!

World of Beer is coming to the Harbor Point area of Stamford.

Yes, the same World of Beer (a nation wide brew-chise) that boasts well over 500 bottles of beautiful, rare, craft and awesome beer…plus just a wee bit of taps.  Just 50.  No biggie.  The beer selection at World of Beer is built not only for the true beer-ocrat, but also for the noobs.  Whatever your taste is, they’ll definitely have you taken care of at the Stamford location.  And, look, they reward your drinking with a Loyalty Card.  Don’t you wish more people would do that?  They’ll keep track of your points with your Loyalty Card or even their new app for iPhone and Droid, helping you to earn merch, discounts, and even get chances at giveaways.  The World of Beer app is sick for other reasons, too.  You can search the entire inventory of the Stamford World of Beer, check out their special events, keep track of your points, and find any other info that you’d possibly need.

Win(e)d Down and Paint Away @ Soon to Open Pinot’s Palette – Harbor Point, Stamford

24 Sep

Update:  Pinot’s Palette will open on December 14!  Use discount code “Neighbor” for 25% off classes to celebrate their first month in business!

The Harbor Point area of Stamford has grown immensely over the past couple of years, but there’s still so much more on the way.  Yes, there are plans for lots more restaurants and there’s also a great new spot that’s slated to open in the middle of November.  We’re talking about Pinot’s Palette, located at 2200 Atlantic Street, #109.

Pinot’s Palette was started in Houston back in 2009 and will soon have expanded into 24 states, including Connecticut of course.  People sign up for two or three ($35 or $45) hour painting classes and bring along plenty of good wine.  While you sip, you paint…and snack.  As simple as that.  Pinot’s Palette will provide the art supplies and apron, the plates for any treats you bring, and will give you the wine glasses for the good stuff.  In terms of who can attend, they want everybody to feel comfortable…experienced painters or not.  Their slogan is, “Paint.  Drink.  Have Fun,” after all.  Plus, when you’re done painting, you get to take your pièce de résistance home with you.

While you can set up an appointment for any time that’s available, you can also host private parties, birthday parties, or attend one of their Date Nights or Girls Night Out.  What, no Lumberjacks Wearing Plaid Night Out?  Either way, Pinot’s Palette will be a fun place to go with friends to explore your artistic side and also relax with some great drinks.  November can’t come soon enough!

For more information, you can e-mail Owner Chad Smith or Studio Manager Joanne Christena Amico at stamford@pinotspalette.com.  Also make sure to check the Pinot’s Palette Stamford site for updates.

Movies in the Park at Harbor Point by Mr. Frosty’s

Heyyyyyyy youuuuu guyyyyyyssssss!

Babbbyyyyyy Ruutttthhhh?

Sloth love Chunk.

First you gotta do the Truffle Shuffle!

Ah, we could repeat almost every line from The Goonies…we’ve seen it that many times.  And, this summer, we can repeat the same lines again and bask in the triumph as The Goonies (never say die) find their way to One-Eyed Willy’s treasure on the ship.  Or, there’s also The Sandlot, Rudy (Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!), and Hotel for Dogs…all of these movies will be shown at dusk in Commons Park in the Harbor Point area of Stamford.  If you’ve been to Mr. Frosty’s, then you know exactly where Commons Park is.  If you haven’t, you can just park on Washington Blvd. and make your way over towards Infinity (The Beer Garden is the opposite direction).

The Beer Garden Soon Swilling Brews w/ Food Trucks @ Harbor Point in Stamford

15 Apr

Update:  The Beer Garden @ Harbor Point is now open and here are our first impressions.

Prost!  And, we’ll be saying Prost! quite a bit when, sometime in early May, Stamford gets its own hot new spot for the beer enthusiast:  The Beer Garden @ Harbor Point.  The Beer Garden is being created through a collaboration of Imian Hospitality and BLT.  And, this is not going to be any kind of puny pub, either.  It’s over 6,000 square feet, has seating for over 300 people, has two levels, has a private bar room, and has an outdoor terrace on the second floor with killer views of the Sound.

As for the beer, they’ll be serving up craft brews with 24 on draft.  According to the press release, they’ll also be pouring hard to find ales from craft breweries.  Some of brews you can expect are Dogfish Head, Captain Lawrence, Curious Traveler, Thomas Hooker, and Two Roads.  We’re sure they’ll be pouring Half Full, too.  But, it’s not just beer on draft, it’s also about larger bottles of craft brews to please the consummate beerologist.  And, if you happen to be one of those people who doesn’t like beer or who just needs a break from some brews, you could check out some “American-centric” cocktails from master mixologist Jason Clark.  Just remember:  Beer before liquor, never been sicker…liquor before beer, you’re in the clear.

Get Your First Bites of Dinosaur Bar-B-Que at the Harbor Point Block Party, Part of Stamford Lights Festival

12 Sep

People have been moaning and groaning, drooling in anticipation for Dinosaur Bar-B-Que to open.

Is it open?

When will it open?

It has to open soon!

OmNomCT…do you know when it will open?

Well, we’ve still got some time before that happens, but you can get your first licks in on September 22 from 4-8 pm.  Just stop by during that time at 711 Canal Street (by Fairway Market and Yale and Town) for the first annual Harbor Point Block Party, part of Stamford Lights.  OmNomCT officially endorses this and thinks this could prove to be epically awesome.

So, yes, let’s get focused.  BBQ kind of has that effect on us, you know?  You might remember that we announced that Dinosaur was trying to get a spot in Stamford, then everybody went crazy when we found out it was a done deal.  Heck, we even got to talk to the grand pitmaster and awesome BBQ god himself, John Stage.  People swear by their BBQ (and swear if they don’t get theirs) so we’re sure that people want their first tastes to see what the big fuss is about.

Harlan Social: Hype or Happening? Stamford, CT

16 Aug

Local food, hot shot Chef Stephen Lewandowski from NYC, swanky new space in the new Harbor Point area, ginormous bar, craft beers–from the day we heard about Harlan Social it seemed to have exactly what it takes to be the go-to, happening new spot in Stamford. And, it was for that exact reason that we had to pounce on opening week to check it out for ourselves and see if it was the real deal.

We always try not to let the hype of a newly anticipated restaurant give us inflated expectations, so we walked in with open minds. The experience started off wonderfully. The host & hostesses greeted us with big smiles and lead us immediately to our seats. The space overall was nice: very large, modern, comfortable and warmly decorated. There were plenty of tables, some outside, and a huge, hip looking bar. Within minutes our waitress came over and asked us what we’d like to drink. Unfortunately, from this point forward everything sort of went downhill… Continue reading

Chill Out or Chow Down at Mr. Frosty’s – Stamford/Harbor Point, CT

16 Jun

The Gastronomical Trinity: The Magic Potion Milkshake, Chili Cheeseburger, and Fries

When Anthony Luciani told us about his plans to open up a new place in Stamford, were were excited.  When he told us that he was weeks away from finishing we were more excited.  When he told us that Mr. Frosty’s in Stamford was open we couldn’t contain our excitement so we drove down to Harbor Point, mouths open and watering.

Find this sign and look for the building to the back right…that’s Mr. Frosty’s!

Now, it’s a bit hard to find so here are some clues. The addy is 200 Commons Park South, across from 101 Park Place.  Head down Washington and find a place to park by the new Walgreens mini-shop or the parking lot nearby.  When you cross the street you’ll see 101 Park Place, a sign for Commons Park, and what looks like a newsstand.  Except, this ain’t no newsstand, this is Harbor Point’s new heaven for all things breakfast, grub, and ice cream.  Yes, walk on down the path and you’ll see the brand new Mr. Frosty’s!  Around the area is a beautifully lit fountain, a playground, plenty of walls where you can sit, trails, and a table where you can munch on some food and ice cream.

Kristien, deciding what to get. So many great things.

So, it’s just like Mr. Frosty’s in Norwalk:  walk up to the menu, check out what they have to offer, order, then eat.  Here’s a list so you can be prepared:

• Burgers (with a list of toppings)

• Salads

• Hot Dogs

• Chicken

• Sides

• Breakfast (oh yes, they just did make you a complete addict)

• Soft ice cream and sundaes (hard ice cream coming soon)

• Milkshakes and tornadoes

• Seafood of the Day, Shake of the Week, Tornado of the Week, and Today’s Special

Even though it was a soft opening, a steady stream of customers came by on Wednesday.

You feeling us?  It’s the best of both worlds:  the awesomeness of Beach Burger paired with the frosty goodness of Mr. Frosty’s. We got our grub on with a classic burger for Kristien and the Chili Cheeseburger for me.  If you pay close attention, you might notice a slight difference in the taste.  Beach Burger in Norwalk uses a flat grill, but Mr. Frosty’s in Stamford charbroils their burgers.  Anthony is noticing a good difference in the burgers and is a fan of the charbroil grill.  Aside from that, the flavors remain true and carry over nicely from the burgers.  Kristien got a yummy Banana Foster shake and I went crazy with a candy lover’s dream:  The Magic Potion.

Even though it was a soft opening, a steady stream of customers came by on Wednesday.

Be aware that, just for a bit, Mr. Frosty’s in Stamford will only be serving Chocolate, Vanilla, and Swirl soft serve (you can still get all sundaes and shakes) because their freezer to hold their yummy ice cream hasn’t arrived yet.  When that comes in, though, you’ll be able to get ice cream practically any time of the day.  Wake up, feel like a banana split?  They’ll have you covered.  Want a lunch of a root beer float?  They’re there for ya! Want to finish off your dinner with an ice cream?  Well, you know the rest.

So, stop on by and check out the new kid on the block.  Just remember, they are open from March-November and it’s outdoor seating only.  The prices are good, they are open practically the entire day, and there’s something yummy on the menu for everybody.  Here’s to much success, Mr. Frosty’s!

Yours in gorging and Omnoming,

OmNomCT

Half Full Brewery Tapping into Stamford, CT in August

25 Mar

Update:  Check out our talk with Conor and our tour of Half Full.

If you’ve ever looked at a map of production breweries in the CT/NY area, you probably noticed there ain’t jack squat in Fairfield County. Well, beer lovers, raise your mugs… Half Full Brewery is in town. Poised to open around June/July, they’ve set up shop at 43 Homestead Avenue in the Harbor Point section of Stamford, CT.  Half Full is the hop-child of Conor Horrigan, who used to work at New England Brewing Company and who got his MBA at UConn to make sure Half Full would be a business success.  Right now they’ve got a nanobrewery set up and are in the process of getting a nice 20 barrel microbrewery system installed.  Around May, expect to hear some info about touring the brewery, doing some tastings, and other beer related awesomeness.  You can definitely “Look Forward to More…” as their slogan says. We look forward to more, also, and will keep you updated as June gets closer.

Now, what beer might you be sampling?  Here are the descriptions from Half Full Brewery site, though undoubtedly there are more planned:

Their fun logo!

Half Full Bright Ale
Quick Description: This American Bright Ale is modeled after an Australian Bright Ale, a filtered ale that is golden in color with floral, citrus, and apricot flavors and a crisp bitterness; it falls stylistically in between an American Blonde Ale and a Belgian white, the result of combining 3 different types of malted barley and 2 hop varietals. Since this is a lighter beer, both in taste and in alcohol, it appeals to a broad range of palates.
Style:  Australian Bright Ale
ABV:  4.8%
IBUs:  21
Suggested Pairings:
Fish dishes, salads, and light sauces.
Inspiration: I found this style of beer while on a trip to Australia and it is a great thirst-quenching beer that is ideal for drinking year round whenever you feel like living in your moment and looking forward to more…

Half Full Pale Ale
Quick Description: Our second offering is a bolder, more challenging medium-bodied beer for those looking for a stronger, fuller taste. This beer is styled after an American Pale Ale and is citrusy, balanced, and smooth as a result of the use of 3 different types of malted barley, 4 different varietals of hops, and a special hopping technique. Moreover, this American Pale Ale has an ABV of 5.2% and lightly slaps you with 41 IBUs.
Style:  West Coast Pale Ale
ABV:  5.2%
IBUs: 41
Suggested Pairings:
 Pizzas, burgers and spicy dishes

Half Full Stout
Quick Description: This espresso chocolate stout is a roasty, chocolatey, full-bodied Russian Imperial Stout that is only for the bold. Our Stout is chock full of chocolate as a result of combining 4 different types of malted barley (including a chocolate malt) with cocoa powder. The sweet chocolate is offset by both the roastyness that is contributed by the espresso coffee we added as well as the two different hop varietals we used to give this bad boy 50 IBUs. Our Stout clocks in at an ABV of 8.8% and thus will clock you if you are not careful.
Style:  Russian Imperial Stout
ABV:  8.8%
IBUs:  just shy of 50
Suggested Pairing:
Any chocolate desert that you can think of

Half Full Amber
Quick Description: Our spiced amber ale is the result of 6 different malts colliding with 3 different hop varietals and some subtle spices.  This amber ale has a medium body, 45 IBUs that get swallowed up by the malts and spices, and a cool 6% ABV.
Style: Amber
ABV: 6.0%
IBUs: 45
Suggested Pairing: Deserts and any roasted meat.
Inspiration: The perfect beer for the fall, we brewed this for our last Thanksgiving and it paired very well with both pumpkin pie and backyard football.

We broke it for you in April and now it’s true – Dinosaur Bar-b-que Coming to Stamford, CT in 2012!

11 Oct

OmNomCT <3’s Dinosaur BBQ!

Update:  as of 5 pm, 12/5/12, Dinosaur Stamford is open.  Check our review!

We don’t like to brag…well, ok, I guess we do… but just this one time, ok?  We told you back in April about how Dinosaur Bar-b-que, a NY BBQ favorite, was working on plans to expand to Stamford.  Being the savvy journalists that we are, we investigated and updated you on their negotiations.  Well, Omnomivores, Stamford Advocate just shared that it’s a done deal.  Dinosaur BBQ is officially opening up in Stamford’s South End in November 2012.  Yay!!

We’re so psyched to try Dinosaur Bar-b-que and see how it compares to the original up in my stomping grounds, da CUSE! Especially after being official judges at the Blues, Views & BBQ festival.  Yep, we’re the real deal now!

So, who’s going to be checking it out?  Who’s so excited they’re licking their lips?  We’ll be here to count down the days with ya!

(Thanks for pointing us to the article Erin!)
