Recapping Awesomness: Schneider Weisse Portfolio Tasting with Georg Schneider VI at Harry’s in Fairfield

Our love affair with Schneider Weisse (G. Schneider & Sohn) began a few years ago at Ginger Man SoNo. There was a vintage Aventinus (it was aged for 4 years) on the menu that cost us $16, but was well worth it. That first taste was heavenly and fueled an obsession for us. So, when Harry’s of Fairfield reached out to us about a VIP tasting event featuring the owner of Schneider Weisse, Georg Schneider VI, we didn’t hesitate one bit. And, after spending two hours there at the Fairfield Cheese Company tasting table, we have an even deeper appreciation for all their brews.

Yes, we tasted all of their brews, heard the stories behind each one, and even had an exclusive tasting of their brand new distilled beer. How exclusive? Georg had never even seen the bottle before, it was a first!

There are a few great things about watching the Kentucky Derby.  You get to wear goofy hats, dress like you’re from the 1800s, drink Mint Juleps, and drink away your sorrow with bourbon because you lost all your bets.  But, you can’t just drink any ‘ol bourbon!  Come on, think it through…you need Kentucky Bourbon!  So, to help you stock up and get a nice bourbon portfolio going, Harry’s in Fairfield is offering a very extremely super limited class on 4/30/14 from 7-9 pm.  

For just $30, you’ll get your entry into the Kentucky Craft Bourbon Class that will feature Pappy Van Winkle, George T. Stagg Jr., E.H. Taylor, Elmer T. Lee, Blanton’s, Sazerak, and even more not listed.  In addition, you’ll get to try a Mint Julep made with Buffalo Trace Bourbon.  $30 for tastings of these great bourbons and ryes, especially some being so rare and highly acclaimed, is quite a steal.  The only problem…20 seats.  If you want a spot, call up Jan or Patrick right away at (203) 259-4692 or e-mail them at harrys@snet.net.  Make sure you tell ’em that OmNomCT sent ya! ;)

Geno Auriemma Wine Tasting with Kara Wolters of UConn/WNBA/Olympics Fame at Harry’s in Fairfield

It’s one thing to be a NCAA champion, but to also be a WNBA champion, AND an Olympic gold medalist is a completely other thing.  We are talking about Kara Wolters here who got her start here in CT at UConn.  She’ll be offering up wine for tasting, will be signing autographs, and will be available for pics at Harry’s Wine & Liquor in Fairfield on 11/16 from noon to 2 pm.

So, you’re probably asking, why would a basketball player with major cred on the basketball court be offering up a wine tasting?  That’s because the wine is from none other than her former UConn Huskies coach…everybody’s favorite, Geno Auriemma.  He recently released the Geno Auriemma Wine label through 47 Anno Domini Vineyards in Italy and Kara Wolters is helping to get the word out.

Celebrate Harry’s 72nd Birthday with Wine, Champagne, Cider, and Bourbon Tastings.

Normally for birthdays you need to find the perfect present for your friend then bring it over to the party.  But, it works the opposite way at Harry’s Wine & Liquor Market in Fairfield.  To celebrate their 72nd year in business this week, they’ll be giving you some amazing tasting treats and chances to get some amazing drinks.

First, we’ll start off on Thursday, 10/17, from 4-7 pm.  Kobrand Imports will be there and will be featuring a few wines including a 96 point Sassacaia 2010 ($175) and a 99 point Fonseca Vintage port 2011 that is $100.  While these two wines might not be in your normal price point, they are being sampled, so why not give them a try and see what 96 and 99 pointers taste like?

Then, on Friday, 10/18, from 4-7, you’ll be able to check out the champagnes of Canard Duchene.  If you head over to the other side of Harry’s where the beer is, you’ll be able to get a special tasting of Down East Cider.

Pappy Van Winkle 12 Year Old BourbonFinishing up the week, Saturday is going to be awesome!   If you swing by from 1-4 pm, you can taste an awesome variety of Italian Wines from Vias Imports.  Then, from 4-7 pm Harry’s will be offering a craft bourbon tasting.  We’re talking about Pappy Van Winkle 12 year bourbon and some other mysterious items that Patrick alluded to.  This is what he told us in a recent message:

“We are also going to delve into another hiding spot that we have and pull out another item or two that will be great accents to the tasting, who knows, one of them might even steal the show!”

Oh dear God, what can that mean?  You’ll just have to come by and find out!  In addition, be on the look out at the store for special prices on some of your favorite drinks and liquors.

Congratulations for being in business 72 years.  Here’s to 72 more…

Cheese makes the world go round.  If you disagree, then you shouldn’t be reading this.  See, Fairfield Cheese Company (see our post) has created a load of cheesy goodness in store for you this fall.  If you haven’t stopped by their awesome store in Fairfield, now’s a great time.  See, they’ve just been named the winners of the 2012 Best Cheese Selection by Best of Connecticut.  But, that’s not all.  They are also featured in Food & Wine Magazine as one of the top 5 cheese shops in the entire country by Laura Werlin.  As if this isn’t enough, they’ve got an amazing variety of fun events happening.  So, check ‘um out for the first time or come back again to fall back in love with cheese:

Executive Chef Rob Bleifer of Food Network at Entwine Wine Tasting – Harry’s in Fairfield, CT

Food Network knows their food, Wente Vineyards knows their wines.  Mix ‘um both up and what do ya got?  Entwine.  Food Network’s approach with Entwine is creating a line of wines that will complement any food thrown at them.  While they are crafted to jive well with different kinds of cuisines and dishes, they can still stand tall by themselves as everyday drinking wines.

Feel like trying these out?  Well, you’ll have your chance to try all four Entwine varieties on July 7, from 1-4 pm at Harry’s Wine and Liquor Market in Fairfield, CT.  On hand will be Rob Bleifer, Executive Chef at Food Network.  He’ll be talking about Entwine, will be signing bottles, and will pose for pictures.  Don’t miss your shot to meet a culinary king and try out some killer new wine.  Here are the four Entwine wines along with the descriptions from the site.
