Jealous Gatsby? We at da party of da year: The Iron Bar Gala @ Plan B Milford (w00t w00t)

13 Mar

For an entire year, talented mixologists throughout Connecticut have fought hard to make the best cocktails at Plan B Milford’s Iron Bar competitions.  And, through their skills 12 of them have made it to the final stage:  The Iron Bar Gala.  One winner will prevail, win $1,000 in cash and get a trip to Kentucky with the Plan B crew!

You definitely won’t want to miss this event at Plan B Milford on 3/26/14 at 8 pm.  Seriously, don’t miss it…especially because the final test is bourbon themed using Willett Pot Still.  Tix are just $60 (plus tax and tip) and you get a helluva lot for your dollar, too…an abundance of hors d’oeuvre, 2 drink tickets, samples of all cocktail entries, a chance to vote for the winner, and mingle time with the celebrity judges.

Find the Pappy: the search for which CT restaurant has Pappy Van Winkle’s?

Find the Pappy Plan B Burger Bar

We received an e-mail from Lena DiGenti, Chief Strategy Officer at Locals 8, owners of Plan B Burger Bar & Bistro.  Normally Lena will send us things to look forward to such as beer dinners, openings like their Fairfield location, or burger contests, but this latest e-mail left us, honestly, bewildered.  Here’s the message:

Hey Everyone,

Do you like games? I’ve got one it’s called hide the pickle, oh no not that one –  I mean it’s called Find the Pappy. We hid some away for a rainy day and I’ve run out of patience.

The Pappy is very elusive, he is hard to find and even harder to catch. I heard a rumor he is hanging out in a bar that used to be a train station. Better hurry though he’s old but this guy moves fast.
Good Luck,
~ Lena
So many thoughts went through our head.  A bar at an old train station, Find the Pappy, old guys?  But, it all began to come into focus when we looked at the graphic attached to the email…that’s the one at the top of our post.  We’re talking about Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, aged 20 years.  Yes, the same Bourbon Whiskey that is rated 99 out of 100 at the World Spirits Championship and from Wine Enthusiast.  The same Pappy Van Winkle’s that brings men and women to their knees in frustration of finding.  The same Pappy Van Winkle’s that people call liquor store after liquor store to find, only to be put on a two year long waiting list (if you’re lucky).
Now, onto where you can savor Pappy!  Well, uh, we’ll have to leave that up to you.  It’s part of the fun and the mystery.  If you’re too lazy, let us google that for you.
Good luck in your search and please share your Pappy adventures.

Plan B Burger Bar Opening in Fairfield, Bringing Burgers, Brews, + Booze

14 May

People went crazy last year when Plan B Burger Bar opened in Stamford Town Center. What? A restaurant with great burgers, a killer beer selection, and an amazing variety of bourbon? Yes, yes, and yes. Well kiddos, ya’ll further out east in Fairfield County won’t have to drive out to Stamford anymore for your Plan B fix. Coming this fall, Fairfield will have its own Plan B Burger Bar at 1262 Boston Post Road, the old post office building. If that’s too far to wait, don’t worry. They opened the Stamford location ahead of schedule and maybe that will happen here?

Keep up to date with Plan B Burger Bar Fairfield on Twitter and their Stamford FB page to see what’s new. You’ll especially want to see what this cryptic message on FB means:

We are opening in Fairfield, CT Fall of 2013!
But, you won’t have to wait that long to have a Plan B Burger in the fair city. Stay tuned to find out what we’re doing in Fairfield for National Burger Day on May 28th.

Derby Day Party at Plan B Burger in Stamford has heart…and bourbon

2 May

Derby Day at Plan B Burger Bar in Stamford

Gentlemen and gentlewomen, start your, er, horses.  And they’re off…well, off to Derby Day at Plan B Burger Bar in Stamford from 3-7 on May 4.  Yup yup!  You’ll be able to watch the Kentucky Derby at Plan B and get to comment on all the cool horse names such as Charming Kitten, Itsmyluckyday, Fear the Kitten, Frac Daddy, and the number one contender Black Onyx.

But, does anyone really watch the races?  Everybody knows what it’s really about:

Looking spiffy, wearing huge hats that strangely resemble ufos, dressing like a princess (or prince), and drinking lots of bourbon.  And, you’ll be happy to know that at Plan B you’ll be rewarded for your crazy hat and your daper and dressiness with contests.  There’s even going to be a raffle if you can’t find an ugly hat.  But, perhaps one of the sweetest things is that Plan B is giving back to The American Cancer Society.  You’ll be drinking bourbon anyway, so just make sure to order Four Roses straight, on the rocks, or in their mixed drinks such as their Four Roses Mint Julep.

Unabashedly Sinful 7 Days of Chocolate at Plan B Milford

29 Jan

Plan B Milford Chocolate Week

Last year Plan B Burger Bar in Milford brought the world an unabashed, excessively fat-laden ode to everybody’s favorite pork product:  bacon.  That went down as a huge success for them and the pictures made us drool and wish we were there.  Believe it or not (actually, we do believe it), Plan B Milford must have been plotting away in their secret lair, laughing maniacally (maniacal laugh, maniacal laugh) while they thought of their next week long food event.  Ladies and gentlemen, people of all ages…may we present to you…the one, the only…Seven Days of Chocolate!

That’s a week of chocolate, from 2-11 to 2-17 at Plan B Burger Bar in Milford!  Is it a coincidence that there are seven deadly sins, too?  Well, you’ll be able to peg down gluttony at least after downing some killer apps, salads, burgers, pasta dishes, desserts, and cocktails that feature the brilliant cocoa bean.  Don’t scoff or shake your head like you’re too good for this.  Chocolate is used in many cuisines such as the beautiful moles (sauces, not the animals that ruin your yard) of Mexican cooking.

Here’s the menu in all its glory, thanks to Chef John Brennan at Plan B of Milford:

Five Guys, Jake’s Wayback Burgers, Plan B Burger Bar Poised to Open in Stamford

18 Mar

Stamford loves its burgers, but soon it will be a burger party in the USA. Well, the CT anyway!  Yup, as if it wasn’t awesome enough to have the good burgers from Benny’s Fast Break (closed, now Bridge Street Wienery) and Lucky’s, and the killer burgers, fries and shakes from the recently opened Station Eats, Stamford has more burger deliciousness in store!

Five Guys Burgers and Fries

First off, we’re getting Five Guys Burgers and Fries at 1201 High Ridge Road right next to A&P Fresh.  One of the fun things about going here is breaking open piles and piles of roasted peanuts in the shell while you wait for your order.  And although they aren’t our favorite fries, they’re still pretty good and you sure do get a giant heaping of them and you can order them regular or Cajun style.  The burgers and dogs are pretty darn good, too making Five Guys a burger lover’s dream. In fact, they’re growing so fast that it’s hard to keep track. There are way over 1,000 stores with handfuls being added every month across America and Canada. It’s so popular that we’re a bit worried that the space is too small to accommodate the crowds and the parking lot already kinda sucks, but that all remains to be seen. Google says their average ratings of 3-4 stars, but we can’t wait to rate it for ourselves.  They are now open.

Jake’s Wayback Burgers

Next up is Jake’s Wayback Burgers at 324 Hope Street where a short-lived Chef Luis Express was. Right now there are 45 locations, so this will make 46.  Most of them are in the Northeast, with 10 just in Connecticut.  We’ve never eaten here, but the burgers are handmade and that definitely shows in the pics.  It’s not the hockey-puck shaped burger you get from other chains.  They also have hot dogs, milkshakes, sandwiches, salads, chicken, onion rings, and four kinds of fries.  Depending on where you eat, reviews are from 2 1/2 stars to 4 1/2 stars.  Hopefully the one here is closer to the 4 1/2 stars, especially because it’s 3 minutes from our house.  They are open now, 3/19!

Jakes Wayback Hamburger on Urbanspoon

Plan B Burger Bar

Finally, we’ve got Plan B Burger Bar.  This is the smallest chain of all three with four locations right now in Connecticut and five more on the way including Stamford.  You’ll be able to hit up this burger bar in the plaza at Stamford Town Center, specifically at 230 Tresser Blvd.  Of all the options available, Plan B Burger Bar seems the best and will be a hipper spot to be, just like Station Eats.  The burgers at Plan B Burger Bar are 100% natural with no junk inside plus the beef is certified humane.  Think gastropub, with lots of small plates, an amazing variety of burgers, and even some large plates.  More killer?  Plan B Burger Bar will have a killer beer selection as well as a bourbon selection to die for.  Average ratings are 4 to 4 1/2 out of 5 stars, definitely the most highly rated of all three, despite the kinda lame name, hehe. Plan B opens on August 4 at 2 pm.  Let the burger and beer parade begin!  Plan B is now open and here’s our review.

Have you been to any of these three upcoming spots?  What did you think?  Can you give advice about what to order?
