Now SoNo Marketplace Has Some Balls

23 Nov

Sorry, those jokes never get old…

But, in all seriousness, Mike DiStassio and crew have expanded their The Local Meatball food truck venture into SoNo Marketplace!  They’ll be offering up their awesome meatballs to everybody who comes by until the end of the year (maybe longer, too?), so definitely head on over and check them out.  And, just like Lobstercraft who just opened up a spot at SoNo Marketplace, they’ll still be around town, at parties, and available for events…don’t worry!  While you’re there, check out the great beer and drink options and chill out.  Also, because holidays are coming, there’s lots of fun artisan and food shops here where you can find your perfect gift and ingredients and meats for a killer meal.  Just saying…

LobsterCraft Cafe claws its way into SoNo Marketplace

30 Oct

Dateline OmNomCT.

June 5, 2012.  A local food blog, OmNomCT, broke the news that a food truck was soon to open that would be serving up fresh lobster rolls.  Later that month, that same food blog tracked down the newly opened food truck, LobsterCraft, at the Rowayton’s Farmers’ Market.  They sampled not one, not two, but three different lobster rolls that Captain Mike Harden and co. had created.  Interesting, they thought, that Captain Mike catches many of the lobsters that he serves off of his own boat.

Little did OmNomCT know (or the rest of Connecticut for that matter) that this was the start of a force that would sweep not only Fairfield County, but the entire Nutmeg state.  Soon, LobsterCraft was showing up at fairs, festivals, breweries, parking lots, and even at people’s houses for parties.  Praise after praise, award after award, Captain Mike and crew grew exponentially week after week

And now LobsterCraft is anchoring itself down (but the truck will still be around, don’t worry) on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at the SoNo Marketplace with the opening of the LobsterCraft Cafe.  You can expect the same lobster rolls that they are known for such as the LBLT and the Heatwave, their handcrafted coleslaw, the heart-warming lobster bisque that they have also become known for, and more.

The first day that they’ll be open is this Friday, 11/1/13.  Captain Mike Harden reports that the band The Short Bus will be on hand Saturday night to celebrate this addition to SoNo Marketplace.  He was quoted as saying that he was excited about the opening and was happy to see some of the changes that are in store for the SoNo Marketplace such as an expanded bar area and new restaurants.

This has been Dateline OmNomCT reporting.

SoNo Marketplace, Walrus + Carpenter Join at Beer Garden for Firefighter Pig Roast Fundraiser

3 Sep

Heat & Hops Fundraiser for Norwalk FirefightersBack on August 26, we told you about how great SoNo Marketplace’s new Farm Terrace Beer Garden was.  Craft brews, most local, line the 12 draft lines and the selection of brews by can are very admirable, too.  And, like we said, this is what you imagine a beer garden to be like:  an outdoor area, chilled, laid back, nice vibe.

Well, they are wasting no time in doing more great things with this space (they opened with a benefit for Bully Breed Rescue).  On 9/7 from 2-5 pm, SoNo Marketplace is teaming up with Walrus + Carpenter in Bridgeport for a American craft beer tasting and pig roast.  Walrus + Carpenter is the newest BBQ joint that has hit the scene in Fairfield County and is based out of Bridgeport where Ash Creek used to be.  On Saturday they’ll be spit roasting two pigs in two different ways:

Prost! A Toast to The Farm Terrace Beer Garden @ SoNo Marketplace!

20130824_160247

This past Saturday, 8/24, we stopped by SoNo Marketplace for two reasons.  1)  We wanted to help support the great and sweet doggies like Mama who are up for adoption from Bully Breed Rescue of New Canaan.  2)  We wanted to check out the brand new Farm Terrace Beer Garden right outside the SoNo Marketplace.  Well, we accomplished both tasks thanks to buying a $5 ticket (usually $7 for a draft) from Bully Breed Rescue that got us a beer at the bar.

Now, talking about the bar and the beer garden, we were really amazed at how great it looks.  To be honest, we weren’t sure what it would look like because the outside of the SoNo Marketplace was pretty stark and ordinary when we visited last year.  But, the entryway right by the parking lot has been transformed into a beer oasis.  And, that’s pretty smart of them because in order to get in or to get back to your car you’ll pass by The Farm Terrace Beer Garden!

A Whole Lotta Barks + Beers @ SoNo Marketplace’s New Farm Terrace Beer Garden

14 Aug

Norwalk’s about to get a brand new beer garden courtesy of SoNo Marketplace.  While they have beer at Up the Creek in the center of their space, the Farm Terrace Beer Garden will be a totally different experience.  You’ll be able to pick up food from any of the great spots inside or the food trucks nearby then bring it to your garden table and have some nice cold local and craft brews like Half Full.  It’s slated to open on 8/17 and will have its first official event on August 24:  Barks & Beer.  This is a benefit for Bully Breed Rescue, an awesome organization based in New Canaan that rescues pitbulls, takes care of them, and helps the doggies to find their forever homes.  All you need to do is stop by on the 24th from 1-6 and check out The Farm Terrace Beer Garden and give a $5 donation.  When you give that donation, you’ll get a ticket that entitles you to any draft beer on tap!  And, if you’d like to take home a new friend, be ready because there were be some cute and happy doggies there ready to be adopted!  For a sneak peek, see all the great doggies they have.

While you’re there, you might get some food shopping done with fresh produce from The Farm Stand, check out the restaurants and food shops inside, and/or check out all the awesome booths.

Here are some of the places you’ll need to check out:

  • Chocopologie
  • Festivities Catering
  • Momo Sushi
  • Norm Bloom and Son
  • Pasta Presta
  • Tilden Seafood + Prime Meat Market
  • Wings + Things

Olive Oil Expert Arden Kremer, Olivette, and Fairfield Green Food Guide Press out an Olive Oil Tasting at SoNo Marketplace

10 Nov

UPDATE:  Last Minute Change to Olivette‘s Darien Store!

We’ve been to wine tastings.

We’ve been to beer tastings.

We’ve been to cheese and wine tastings.

We’ve even been to truffle tastings in Portland.

But, we dare say, we’ve never been to an olive oil tasting.

Well, if you count that olive oil and balsamic vinegar bar at Fairway Market that you go around and around and around, sampling, sampling, and sampling…well, if you call that a tasting, then we’ve tasted.  But, we’re talking about pure, unadulterated, beautiful, bright, vibrant, fruity olive oil here.  We’re talking about tasting the differences between years, types of olive, type of region, depth, earthiness, and more.  Look, it’s not just olive oil!  It’s art.

Speaking of art (is this really a segue?), olive oil has been the center of Italian culture for quite a while…like a few thousand years or something like that. :-P  Now, be honest:  you must admit you feel cheated when you go to an Italian restaurant and you are given:  A) butter B) olive oil of inferior quality that tastes like watery nothing.  How sad…how sad.
