Ode to the Tomato: La Tomatina Wine Dinner @ Barcelona Greenwich

27 Aug

In the small town of Buñol, Spain, is a tradition over half a century old:  La Tomatina.  Each year on the last Wednesday of August, crowds gather in Buñol for a food fight like you’ve never seen before.  Although Buñol town officials have limited this year’s celebration to 20,000 revelers, it’ll still be as messy as ever.  That’s because festival-goers throw tomatoes at each other (they are pre-crushed so no one gets hurt) and try to climb a greased pole to knock over the jamón (ham) on top.

We’re not sure if it is the jamón or tomatoes that inspired Executive Chef Michael Lucente to create his La Tomatina Wine Dinner menu, though.  We know after spending some quality time at the Chef’s Table at Barcelona Greenwich that Chef Lucente loves both of these, but this meal is a definite homage to the humble heirloom tomato.  This special once a year meal is on Wednesday, August 28, and starts at 7 pm.  $50 (tax and gratuity not included) gets you four courses that not only feature tomatoes, but are also paired with wine.  To get your spot, just visit the Barcelona event site and purchase your tix…that easy!  Here are the deets:

Plan B Milford Chocolate Week

Last year Plan B Burger Bar in Milford brought the world an unabashed, excessively fat-laden ode to everybody’s favorite pork product:  bacon.  That went down as a huge success for them and the pictures made us drool and wish we were there.  Believe it or not (actually, we do believe it), Plan B Milford must have been plotting away in their secret lair, laughing maniacally (maniacal laugh, maniacal laugh) while they thought of their next week long food event.  Ladies and gentlemen, people of all ages…may we present to you…the one, the only…Seven Days of Chocolate!

That’s a week of chocolate, from 2-11 to 2-17 at Plan B Burger Bar in Milford!  Is it a coincidence that there are seven deadly sins, too?  Well, you’ll be able to peg down gluttony at least after downing some killer apps, salads, burgers, pasta dishes, desserts, and cocktails that feature the brilliant cocoa bean.  Don’t scoff or shake your head like you’re too good for this.  Chocolate is used in many cuisines such as the beautiful moles (sauces, not the animals that ruin your yard) of Mexican cooking.

Here’s the menu in all its glory, thanks to Chef John Brennan at Plan B of Milford:
