This Spud’s for You: The Tater Truck Eyeing to Roll into Stew Leonard’s

12 May
Giant Idaho Potato Tater Truck Tour

Coming to Stew’s in Norwalk! Pic from http://bigidahopotato.com

Recently on the 5th grade Connecticut State Math Test, we saw this question:

If you take a handcrafted Idaho potato that is 12 feet wide, 13 feet tall, and 72 feet long, what would be the volume?  Once you find the volume, take into account that this potato is 12,000 pounds and calculate (round up if necessary) how many people this potato can feed in one day.  Take into consideration that the average person eats 1 1/2 pounds of potatoes a day.  Show all of your work.

Unfortunately, it was reported that a vast majority of students got this question wrong, making the state rethink this question…thanks a bunch Common Core!  While we don’t even know the answer ourselves, we do have some stats to share from a recent press release about this giant Idaho Potato that will be stopping by Stew Leonard’s Norwalk on May 31 from 11-4 pm:

Croissant? Bagel? No, Crogel: Stew Leonard’s Newest Hybrid Goodie

16 Jan

It has been scientifically proven that when you mix anything with a croissant and buttery goodness that it instantly becomes amazeballs.  Take delicate and thin layers of buttery dough and turn it into a donut?  Sure!  Or, how about you take those beautiful layers of heart-wrenching yumminess and put it in the form of a bagel?  Ummmm, duh!

125 Years in the Making: 3 Thanksgivukkah Recipes for Noshing

20 Nov
Happy Thanksgivukkah!

Thanksgivukkah:  it’s the unofficially official name of the holiday that’s ready to happen on Thursday, 11/28.  Yes, the best of both worlds together:  the joyous first night of Hanukkah and, of course, Thanksgiving.  This is a very rare occurence, actually.  So rare, in fact, that the last time this has happened was 125 years ago.

Well, it should be clear that Thanksgivukkah will create a very unique meal opportunity, blending together the best of both holidays.  Lucky for all you voracious OmNomivores out there that Stew Leonard’s Executive Chef Michael Luboff has thought long and hard about this and has created a few recipes perfect for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.  And, even if you’re not Jewish, these are some great recipes that you can work into your Turkey Day meal.  Enjoy!

Half Croissant, Half Donut…The Cro-Do: Stew’s Version of an Epic Pastry

9 Jul

The Co-Do, photo from Stew Leonard’s

We got the news, straight from Stew Leonard’s yesterday:  they are now carrying Cro-Dos.  That’s just Stew’s way of saying they are hand making 162 layered butter and dough treats that are deep fried until they are a beautiful golden brown.  It’s, literally, half croissant, half donut.  If you’ve been keeping up with the news, you probably have heard of the craziness involving Dominque Ansel’s Bakery in NYC.  Lines form hours before the bakery even opens, and according to the website, you have a good chance of getting a Cronut(trademarked) if you get in line by 7:15.  Then, when you’re in line you’re limited to just a purchase of 2.  You can of course get on the pre-order list by calling them or place a large order of 50 or more to make things easier.

All of this craze reminds us of the “Brunch Village” episode of Portlandia where people become obsessed with marionberry pancakes.  In fact, they are so obsessed that they have formed a large line that wraps around the neighborhood.  In fact, the episode is so epic that the entire episode shows their epic journey to get those pancakes.  Believe it or not, we actually saw this happen in Portland with people forming a huge line to get into a brunch spot by Voodoo Donuts.  We kinda feel that way about the Cronut.

Go for Gold at Stew Leonard’s Olympics Celebration! CT and NY

26 Jul

Meghan Bell at Stew Leonard’s has become our best friend.  She’s letting us know about the awesome things going down at Stew Leonard’s and their wine shops.  Well, we’ve got some fun events to share with you to get you into that 2012 Olympics spirit.  Unless noted by specific date, the events run from July 27 to August 12.  During that time, Stew Leonard’s will be donating all money from their Stew’s Wishing Wells in Norwalk, Danbury, and Yonkers to the Special Olympics.  So, let’s light this torch up, baby, and start the games!

Drinking Curls

First off, hit up Stew Leonard’s Wines on Friday, July 27 from 4 to 7 pm or Saturday, July 28 from 1-5 for the “Wide World of Spirits.”  Appropriately so, you’ll be able to have drinks from around the world.  Imagine if drinking was an Olympic sport?  Who among you would get the gold?

  • Caipirinha (South America)
  • Il Spr!z (Europe)
  • A sake drink (Asia)
  • Amarula (Africa)

Cheese Slinging

  • July 28-29:  Stew Leonard’s delis will see who takes the gold in terms of cheese.  The contestants?  English, French, Italian, and American cheeses.  Come by, taste, and vote.  The results will be on their FB page on July 30.

Dessert Downing

  • Bakers at Stew Leonard’s will go crazy with cupcakes, cookies, and other desserts using the Olympic rings and the games as inspiration.

Caffeine High Jump

  • They have created a special blend called Stew’s “Olympic Blend” Coffee.  Perk up and see how much you can drink.

International Hot Bar Body(un)building

  • Every day at Norwalk, Newington, and Yonkers you can check out a new country’s cuisine at their hot bar.  This is one competition to unbuild that pretty figure of yours.  That’s okay, it’s worth it.  Nothing an hour or so at the gym can’t cure.

Pizza Tossing

  • At Norwalk and Newington, you can check out Olympics pizzas that are made with peppers, mimicking the Olympic rings.  Salute the flag, then eat it.

Bovine Biathlon

  • Say hi to Wow the Cow who will be wearing a toga and will be crowned in laurels.  Taking it back, old school style.
