Westport Farmers Market Winter Market 15-16

One of the biggest struggles of Thanksgiving is finding that right balance between buying food in advance and dealing with other shoppers when you’re running to the store the last minute if you’re lucky enough to have a grocery store open on Turkey Day. But, hey, it’s even easier this year to make a great Thanksgiving feast with a special Westport Farmers’ Market Holiday Market! Come down to Gilbertie’s Herb Gardens (7 Sylvan Lane in Westport) from 10-2 on November 24, and there will be plenty to check out. Continue reading

Chef Cooper + Westport Farmers’ Market = A Wonderful Evening Forking It Over

We walked into Saugatuck Grain & Grape in Westport excited to kick off the Fork It Over event. While it was our first time at this event, we knew if Westport Farmers’ Market was at the helm, we were in for an amazing evening. A crowd had already gathered, conversation bubbled over from the entryway to the side room. Not wanting to waste any time at all, we grabbed our champagne, checked out the amazing liquor and wine variety, and ogled the Negroni cocktails they had aging in barrels. We also had some great conversations with Lori Cochran-Dougall, the Director of Westport Farmers’ Market, and Chef Bill Taibe of LeFarm/The Whelk/Kawa NI, talking about what’s new and delish in the CT food scene. Seasons change. The Earth tumbles ahead through fall, winter, spring, then summer. And, as the seasons change, so does the fruit and veggies that pop up magically from farm fields. Some get sold at the farm, some make their way to restaurants, and some are brought to many of the farmers’ markets that dot Connecticut now more than ever. And, at one of the markets, there’s a palpable energy, a strong core of farmers, restaurateurs, chefs, business owners, and freshconscious consumers. We are speaking of Westport Farmers’ Market, of course, founded by Paul Newman and Chef Michel Nischan.

Westport Farmers' Market poster_summer15

Finally, after a tiny hibernation, the Westport Farmers’ Market is back! This not only marks a decade of back to back warm-air markets, but it also highlights their focus on keeping things local. It all began back in June 2006 when Paul Newman and Michel Nischan (he just received a James Beard Award for Humanitarian of the Year last night) started Westport Farmers’ Market.

Live local this summer season

Live local this summer season

The Westport Farmers’ Market (we love how they use the apostrophe in the correct place, btw) is back for some more action with the kickoff of their 2014 summer season.  This is their 9th summer season and with everything they have planned for the coming months, this will probably be their best season ever.  WFM takes place at 50 Imperial Avenue from 10-2 pm every Thursday, starting on 5/22 and going all the way until 11/6.

Some highlights for this season include:

• Produce, products, and meats from a huge list of vendors (full list below)

Lobstercraft is in da house!

• Local chefs will have weekly demos, highlighting local food from 10:15-11 (list coming soon)

• Demos on healthy living, food prep, butchering demos from Craft Butchery, and more

• WFM has a local non-profit host each week, raising vital funds for nearly 30 organizations.

• Artist Alley will feature some of the area’s best artists the first Thursday of each month.

Cabbage Cooking Contest at Westport Farmers’ Market 1/18

13 Jan
Cabbage was cool to cook with way before anybody ever heard of kale.  Yeah, we said it.  What you gonna do, huh?  But, the problem with cabbage is that it can be soggy or be off-putting if it’s not done right.

cabbage from Microsoft Clipart Well, we’ll let Chef Wirt Cook from Redding Roadhouse and butcher-extraordinaire from Saugatuck Craft Butchery be the judges of that.  They’ll be the local celebrity judges at a cabbage cooking competition at the Westport Farmers’ Market on 1/18 starting at 11 am.  While we might not want to be around either Wirt or Ryan a few hours after the sampling (hopefully they take some Beano), you better stick around until noon when they’ll pick the winner.  That lucky duck will win a full cleanse system from The Stand Juice Company and the bragging rights as winner of the Cabbage Kibosh.

Westport Farmers’ Market Begins Saturday Winter Markets

1 Nov

poster_winter_rev

The ever-popular Westport Farmers’ Market doesn’t just stop because of a silly thing like colder weather.  Pshhhh.  They just set up shop somewhere else during the colder months!  That’s why you’ll be able to visit them from 11/16 – 3/15 from 10 – 2 pm at Gilberties Herb Garden.
The winter market begins their fourth season at Gilberties Herb Garden and now they’re on Saturdays!  Huge!  We’ve been sad because we’ve never been able to visit the Westport Farmers’ Market because we both work during the week, so this will be the perfect opportunity for us to check it out!
