Interior of Post 154 in Westport overlooking the open kitchen

Dear beloved OmNomivores,

When’s the last time that you wrote a letter to a friend, folded it up into an envelope, slapped a stamp on it, then mailed it out?  If you’re anything like us, you can probably count on your hands the number of things you’ve mailed in the last few years. We bet you don’t even know where your closest mailbox is.  So, it’s no surprise to see post offices close down across Connecticut and the rest of America.  And, the fate of these (often-times) architecturally amazing and ornate buildings is either to be knocked down (sad), to stay put, unoccupied (bad for the neighborhood), or to be repurposed for another great thing (awesomeness).

This is where Post 154 of Westport comes in. Opened just two months ago in the old Westport Post Office building, you can still see traces of the post office inside, but you also see an astonishingly beautiful open kitchen, a large, welcoming bar, and cozy booths and tables throughout. After gawking at the interior, we were quickly seated. Now, it’s important to point out that we called ahead and asked about reservations.  Unfortunately, like many new restaurants in the area, they only take reservations for large groups, so we asked when there is no wait. The host said if you come before 6:30pm or after 9:00pm you’re golden, so we came at 9:30pm, because if we eat at 6:00pm, well, we’d need a 4th meal by 11:00pm. Yeah, that’s how we roll.

Sake to Me, Westport: Pink Sumo Sushi & Sake Cafe Rolls into Town

20 Nov

Sick! Love that sign! From Pink Sumo’s Tumblr.

Westport’s quite the dining destination, now isn’t it?  Whatever you’re in the mood for, too, they’ve got the means to feed your need.  You want a burger on a barge?  Check out Black Duck.  You want some ribs to nom on?  Check out Bobby Q’s.  In the need for some seafood served up with a creative flare?  Crack open the doors of The Whelk.  Feel like some great farm-to-table?  Pick Terrain, LeFarm, or The Dressing Room.  Well, you get the idea.  If you don’t get the idea, sorry, we can’t be much more repetitive just for your sake…or is that sake, the drink?  We have to move on.  Seriously, we need to.

So, let’s add another reason to hit up Westport for some cravings:  sushi.  Yes, there’s a new bad girl in town and her name is Punk Sumo Sushi & Sake Cafe.  Well, we guess she’s a girl.  Guys can like pink too, yes, we shouldn’t judge.  We’ve very excited for the opening, slated for 11/26/12 at 11 am.  They’ll be rolling, slicing, and dicing food, and also pouring out sake at 4 Church Lane, right across the street from the YMCA and next to Urban Outfitters (boyfriends and husbands, be prepared for a pre or post shopping trip).

Now, here are some reasons why we’re ready to try out Punk Sumo Sushi & Sake Cafe:

Bartaco, Moja, and Safita to Open in Westport at National Hall Complex! Yeah Variety!

8 Oct

Porkslap Ale (it’s boss) with tacos at Bartaco Stamford

Update:  Moja is now open and bartaco is having a soft opening this week, 4 pm until closing with normal hours start with lunch on 6/17 at 11:30!

Located at 20 Wilton Road in Westport (the old Peter Coppola space & next door to Save the Children), bartaco opens its doors to the public today after 4pm for a soft opening. The 4pm opening time will take place all week and we will begin lunch service next Monday, 6/17 at 11:30am.

It’s been spinning around the rumor mill for over a year, but just a few days ago there was confirmation from Vanessa Inzitari of Westport Daily Voice:  Bartaco is coming to Westport.  This will be the fourth Bartaco to hit the streets, with one in West Hartford, one in Stamford, and the other in Port Chester.  The lease is now signed, so you’ll be able to get your drinks and get stuffed on tacos at 20 Wilton Road.  Although we were critical of Bartaco in our last review, we can always give the Westport location a shot.

Moja sake, from their FB page

According to Vanessa’s article, Bartaco will open in the spring, perfect timing for the margaritas and drinks that lots of people rave about.  But, even if Bartaco isn’t your style, there will be two other choices of restaurants.  You could check out Moja:   Asian fusion with Brazilian flare.  Another great piece of news here is that it looks like they will have lots of custom and unique sakes!  According to their FB page (website is down right now), “Our mission at Moja is to deliver a healthy, fresh, unique eating experience based on asian cuisine with flavors from around the world, served in a vibrant, upbeat environment.”  We’re all on board with that.

Exclusive Broken Shed Vodka Tasting + US Launch at Spotted Horse and Gray Goose – Westport + Southport, CT

22 Jul

Vodka has become one of the most popular spirits at restaurants and bars over the past few years.  Case in point, just go to a bar and see how many vodka choices there are or a liquor shop and see shelf upon shelf filled with the distilled goodness.  It’s easy to use in drink mixes and often gives that extra bite at the end of a sip that so many enjoy.

Well, in comes another vodka to try:  Broken Shed Vodka.  What makes this vodka different from others is its country of origin:  New Zealand.  In fact, this is the first vodka made in New Zealand to be sold in the US.  Just this past June they launched here and both Spotted Horse Tavern and Gray Goose Cafe were quick to pick up the additive-free, super clear, and four-time distilled Broken Shed and pour it out for customers.

So, come celebrate at Spotted Horse Tavern and Gray Goose Cafe on July 25 for the Broken Shed Vodka USA Launch here in the great state of Connecticut!  We’re still revolutionary, ya know?  They’ll be pouring out specialty Broken Shed Vodka drinks.  The hoopla begins at Spotted Horse Tavern from 5-7 then ends at Gray Goose Cafe from 7-9.

What are some of your favorite drinks that have vodka in them?  Have you tried Broken Shed?
