Slices of NY Heaven + More @ Bronx House Pizza Pie in Springdale, Stamford

25 Oct

Just a short walk from our house is the brand new Bronx House Pizza Pie that has its grand opening tomorrow. The new joint, owned by Bruno DiFabio who also owns Amore on Hope Street, ReNapoli in Greenwich, and many other great award-winning pizza places, is located at 27 Ryan Street. If you’re coming off of Hope, turn down Camp Ave. then you’ll see it right after the Twin Rinks and across from Napa Auto Parts.

Riko’s Pizza Opens New Hope Street Spot . . . with a Bar!

10 Oct

Stamford is no stranger to pizza joints, especially when you count ’em up on Hope Street. Misto, Vinny’s Backyard, Amore, Springdale Pizza, Hope Pizza, Pappas, Papa John’s (gag), and even (double gag) Domino’s. But now there’s another place for Stamfordites and Springdalers to go: Riko’s Pizza. Their new restaurant is loacted at 886 Hope Street and is right next to Bank of America and is directly across from the Springdale train station. Park on the road (bring quarters) or in their newly paved lot to the left of the restaurant. Their newest spot is replacing their 581 Newfield Avenue location.

There’s a pizza station, a hot and salad bar open all day, a coffee and juice bar, cookie bar, bigger selection of breads including Norwalk’s own Wave Hill Bread, expanded selection of items on the shelves including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, a ridiculously amazing olive bar, and a speedier checkout experience with four express registers. Free pizza? Free pizza! Yes, it’s true! Just stop by Steven Fox Jewelry at 8 Lewis Street from 11-4 on May 7 for free pizza. Oh, but not any pizza: we’re talking about New Haven Pizza Truck. While you take a seat and enjoy some slices courtesy of Steven Fox Jewelry, you can learn about Kids in Crisis, an organization that we care deeply about. If you remember from a previous post from us, they had almost a million dollars cut from their budget. Then, if you’d like to, you can donate money to their organization to help them fill in the funding gap that is left.  Continue reading

Drunken Dim Sum + Tiki Cocktails: Pizza Surf Club Opening Above Fortina Stamford!

13 Apr

Surf some waves of cheese . . . and Tiki cocktails . . .

Update: We visited Pizza Surf Club this past Sunday and need to update our original post. First of all, drinks were hit or miss. The Mousse Juice was still great, but the Margaritas were either weak like water or had too much bite from cheap-tasting tequila. The food portion of the Pizza Surf Club was even more disappointing, with only square pies being brought around sporadically. And, while the pizza was okay, it certainly wasn’t up to the same standard as other Fortina pizza. We wondered where all that other great and fun food was that they put on display opening day. We were also a bit disappointed with the bar service. One bartender, in particular, was slow and came off as rude and unconcerned. At other times, we received the wrong drinks, getting a Margarita instead of a Motorino. Last of all, and certainly not under the control of Pizza Surf Club, but the whole deck had a college frat-party kind of vibe with people spilling drinks, sloppy drunk, and doing shots. We can’t say that we recommend going to Pizza Surf Club anymore, but we do still think that Fortina downstairs is great and worth a visit.

Surf’s up on this one, dudes and dudettes: the rooftop Pizza Surf Club will be open this Sunday at (and above) Fortina in Stamford . . . oh, and you’re gonna be hanging ten . . . or is it three sheets to the wind? Well, it’s just gonna be f’n awesome, okay? Stop by starting at noon.

Pizza Surf Club will feature a nice variety of drinks (just $8) and plenty of mixed drinks too. Oh, but not any cocktails, when you’re at the Pizza Surf Club you’ll be drinking a smorgasbord of Tiki drinks. TIKI BAR, YES!

And, while you’re there, you’re gonna wanna get your nom on, so the kitchen’s got ya covered. Chef Jared Falco of Fortina shared that they’ll be featuring all the kinds of food that the owners and chefs of Fortina want to have when they’ve been out drinking. We’re talking tacos, corn dogs, empanadas, Sloppy Joes, and all sorts of dim sum that will slap the hell out of your tastebuds. One dish in particular Chef Falco created was a Braciole (cooked in bacon) Burrito that is nestled by risotto and more.

They will be keeping the rooftop deck open seven days a week, although it will be seasonal. Not too much surfing’s going down in December, ya know? Also, don’t think that this will be the only place that you’ll ever see the Pizza Surf Club. As they work their way through the spring and summer here, they’ll be looking at their other spots to see if they can set up something similar, even in a basement or area below the restaurant. And, as they look to open more Fortina restaurants, they’ll be keeping the Pizza Surf Club as a priority, too.

Yeah, surf’s up brahhhh. Hope you can make your way down to Fortina to check it out.

Getting to the Bottom of Barrel House Restaurant + Bar in Stamford – Review

15 Mar

In 2012, Claudio and Silvy Ridolfi opened Cotto at 51 Bank Street where Tappo used to be. This quickly became a go-to spot for people who wanted some pizza, some Italian . . . and well, of course, some wine. Seeing this success, they recently took over the former spot of Patrizia’s, a few buildings over on Main Street. Like Patrizia’s, they have pizza, but they also focus on smaller plates, burgers, and their beer list. And, with this new concept and location, Barrel House was born. Continue reading

There are lots of great things going on at Brick + Wood in Fairfield, people! First up, something that we are so very excited about is their new chef: Jes Bengston. You might know that name because Jes has been the chef at The Granola Bar and recently was honored at the Greenwich Wine & Food Festival by being named to a select group of the Most Innovative Chefs of 2015. She started working at Brick + Wood a few weeks back, but was officially announced as chef just a few days ago.

In addition, this week marks the first year anniversary for Brick + Wood! They will be celebrating all week (11/3-8) with specials and deals on food and drinks, so you’ll want to come by every day. ;)  When you stop by during the weekend, you’ll not only get to check out their brand spanking new mobile pizza oven (yes, you can have them come to your party!), but you’ll also get to snag and destroy FREE dessert pizzas.

And, finally, you will get your shot at having a pizza of your own on the menu for a day with The Guest Chef Series! Just visit here, give your pizza a name, give the ingredients, and answer a few more questions and you’ll be put into the running. Wrapping things up, the Guest Chef Series today (11/4) will be Chef Neil Fuentes of Jojoto in Branford who will be making his own special pizza, no doubt with a little Venezuelan flava.

Congratulations on your first year and congratulations to Chef Jes!

Experience Pizza at Its Best on The Connecticut Pizza Trail

20 Aug

The Tri-State area has no shortage of pizza joints that people can’t get enough of. And while NYC spots seem to always get a heaping portion of the praise and attention, Connecticut has been stealing the spotlight as of late. The Daily Meal’s 101 Best Pizzas in America of 2015 ranked 9 CT pies (Roseland, Ernie’s, Domenick and Pia’s, BAR, Zuppardi’s, Colony Grill, Modern Apizza, and Sally’s) on their list with Frank Pepe’s of New Haven taking the #1 spot. Oh, and last year? Yeah, they took the #1 spot also. As if that weren’t recognition enough for our good ‘ole Nutmeg state, Andrew Zimmern is also in love with CT pizza, placing both Sally’s and Pepe’s on the top of his favorite pizza list. And, Food & Wine placed Pepe’s on their Best Pizza Places in the U.S. list, too.

It’s awesome for CT to get so much (deserved) love. So awesome, in fact, that the Connecticut Office of Tourism created the Connecticut Pizza Trail so you can experience all of our state’s pizza glory. And, as official CT Food Correspondents for Connecticut, we wanted to help get the word out. The list below is a compilation of expert advice and customer love from social media. If you feel like your favorite pizza shop needs to be on this list, then throw your slice into the ring, like their Facebook page, then share your fave to their timeline or even send them a message to @CTVisit on Twitter. Our faves not on this list are Bar Sugo in Norwalk, ReNapoli in Greenwich, and Amore in Stamford.  Continue reading
